    This is how my brain remembers how quake looked when i first played it with a 3dfx card :)
    So glad John Carmack was big on open sourcing things so cool stuff like this is possible, wish more people would do it.

    First time i played Quake in 1996, everything was software rendered, in 1997 I played Quake II and I bough a 3Dfx additional card, then I played again Quake, it was a real revolution in rendering and fluidity in 480p. So when I see this video with an RTX 4090, it's fun 🙂 and nice.

      I love hearing about the first time people played or saw Quake 1, or if it wasn't technically the first time, the time they appreciated it. I fell in love with it at first from a distance because I didn't have a PC, then finally playing it, then years later playing it networked with friends locally, and then finally playing single player modded. And it just gets better with time.

    There is just one single thing I didn't like. When in the central area of Necropolis, you jump down, get the key and the zombies start rising out of the water, in the original it was green, murky, dirty water which added tremendous nuances to the atmosphere and the rotten corpses rising from it. In this, it's crystal clear water which I think takes a lot out of the atmosphere of that encounter. Otherwise really nice in all aspects and great playing as well!

    Quake nightmare mode is so much easier than Doom, you seem to have plenty of ammo and health, there are no overwhelming enemy armies or surprise monster lockers. And mostly seem to be no respawn of enemies. It might have helped a little that you knew all the secrets, but Quake should have had a real nightmare level.

    • @pooshrulez

      Quake couldn't spawn as many enemies simultaneously as Doom did due to performance overhead (3D models vs. sprites). That's why both Q1 and Q2 are way easier than Doom. I like how Unreal handled this problem by improving enemy AI rather than making them bullet sponges (except Titan).

      @pooshrulez  Рік тому +1

      No. Buying an RTX 4090 purely for ray tracing is not worth it. The thing is that modern games learned to "fake" lighting so well that they look almost as good as with ray-traced lighting but without performance overhead. While RT helps make better screenshots, you barely notice significant visual improvements while playing. I played Cyberpunk 2077, Control, and Metro Exodus with RT and didn't notice a substantial quality increase over the previous playthroughs without RT.
      I bought RTX 4090 for a different reason. I'm playing VR sim-racing, and RTX 4090 is the only GPU that provides a comfortable framerate in Assetto Corsa Competizione VR without sacrificing visual quality.

      Quake RT is based on vkQuake mod. Hence, the latest expansion -- Dimension of the Machine -- will not work since it is requires Quake Remastered engine. But all other expansions should work.

      I think that even RTX 3060 can run Q1RTX smoothly. Moreover, Q1RTX supports DLSS (not used in this video). Q2RTX, on the other hand, is way more resource-demanding.

      Q1RTX is based on vkQuake: github.com/sultim-t/vkquake-rt/
      There is no official Linux release, but since vkQuake can be compiled for Linux, I think you can do the same for Q1RTX.
