A Million Little Pieces is a gripping narrative about life in recovery. As an addiction counsellor, I was told about this movie by a client and truly think it would be an excellent tool for group work when presented in an appropriate context. There are several triggers throughout the film and providing support for viewers is advisable. There was one moment where the character Leonard offered to be a father-figure to James, which could have been framed differently. Emphasizing a supportive role could have been about being a sponsor or a friend rather than taking on a role as a father figure, but if that is the only criticism, it's a minor one. This movie is a very real depiction of people supporting each other within the complex landscape of violence, substance use, suicidal ideation, hopelessness, blame, helplessness, consequences, deception, struggle, challenge, medical support, withdrawal symptoms, programming and many other aspects as related to the management of addiction. It is well done and definitely worth watching.
