Thank you for the amazing tutorial. I was wondering what do you think about the SONY sel18-200 OSS lens. Is it worth it? I worried about the sharpness on the edges at 200mm. Please comment

What lens should I use on my Sony a6000 for daily shooting purposes and for shooting wild life? I have 16-50 kit lens, 55-210 zoom lens, 18-105 G-lens and 30mm macro. Or should I buy any other lens? please recommend.

wow, this was so helpful. I am a total novice to photography and my Sony a6000 is the first real camera I've ever owned. I was so sad when first playing with it because I couldn't get most of the pictures in focus. 20 minutes into your video and you go over focus settings and I realize it's on af-a as default. I start playing with focus as you go over in the video and BOOM, pictures are all in focus! Woah, just made me not return my camera because I was so hopeless of ever learning this.
I can't wait to buy your book! I have to wait until after Christmas but then I'm getting it and going through it chapter by chapter. You really did make this so easy and broke it down for is amateurs - thank you!

A neat trick you can use with that built-in flash is that you can actually hold it back with one finger so it's pointing upwards, so you can bounce it off the ceiling. Albeit, this is a last resort and you need a fairly low ceiling, but it does work great.

Thank you Tony Northrup! When I first purchased my a6000, I played around with it for half an hour and after that didn't touch it for two days. I was so intimidated by all the features and functions. And the fact that it was my first digital camera only exacerbated the whole situation. Then I found your video on youtube..........

    Nice video Tony!
    As a A6000 user I would highly recommend Sigma prime lenses 19mm f2.8, 30mm f2.8 and 60m f2.8. they are under $200.00 each.
For ultra wide angle Rokinon 12mm f2.0 and if you like fisheye look Rokinon 8mm f2.8, these are fully manual lenses but at that focal length it's easy to focus. Best external flash for A6000 is Nissin i40, small flash with enough power for most of the pictures. If you are going to use A6000 on tripod I would recommend Neewer L bracket with Arca-Swiss mount.

I cannot thank you enough for making this video. I bought this camera at a pawn shop for a third of its value, and it had horrific performance. So far I love my "new" Sony a6000. I wanted to upgrade from mere smart phone use and this is a great step up without breaking the bank.
I have watched a lot of vids on setting things up and this is a rare one where the pro says a lot of the defaults are just fine. Almost exclusively, tutorials portray defaults as terrible if not blasphemy. It made me wonder why camera manufacturers would set the defaults as terrible and unusable? At least this guy honestly states a lot of the defaults are fine and time savers.
That said, I am learning the deep theory so I better understand when to NOT rely on defaults. I started in the nineties on 35mm SLRs and know what it is like to tweak the primary three for every shot (it sucks). At least on these newer cameras there are semi auto modes where I can just rely on the camera to automatically adjust one or two sides of the triangle instead of it all being on my shoulders. .
So far I haven't seen a huge improvement using the Sony a6000 in full auto mode compared to my Motorola smart phone. But that is largely because I have not tweaked a lot of the settings. Courses like this one help a LOT.
Of course the 48 MP sensor in MY Motorola smart phone is ridiculously good too, even proving useful for astrophotography. But the depth of field is almost completely fixed on my smart phone (not low enough) and the higher iso settings are VERY noisy. Plus mounting any cell phone to a telescope barely works.
I forgot how much of a difference F flexibility makes in giving a professional appearance to my images. And even an APSC sensor will handle higher iso settings vastly better than the microscopic sensor of even a great smartphone. So I have zero regrets here.
With the a6000 I won't merely be taking pics. It will enable a more artistic approach. The focus and compose technique is a key advantage of real cameras.

In December of 2018, this is still the best video tut. for the sony A6000. I have had my 6000 for a little under two years, and have watched TONS of vids. trying to learn about my camera. I come from the days of film and darkrooms. Digital is new to me, plus film and darkrooms was a long time ago, so I'm trying to re-learn photography in general, and it really helps to know how the camera itself works. Thanks for this video, and I'm glad I discovered this channel!

    Tony,
Really informative video. After watching it I ordered your book to learn more about Photography. Hopefully it is as easily explained in your book as you did it on this video? I love pictures but I usually use my cell phone or a average P&S camera. I am ready to step up to a camera such as the Sony A6000. The question I have for you is I am on a tight budget( Daughter in college for 6 years) and want to buy the body only and pick up a lens to fit my style. I am torn between the Sony 50mm f/1.8 mid range lens or Sony E55-210mm f4.4-6.3 lens. I love taking pictures of landscape, family gatherings, food, oceans and cars. Which lens do you think would fit all my needs as a starter for my 1st professional camera??? I would really appreciate your opinion on this matter. Thanks in advance

He clearly doesn't know how to focus with this camera or is extremely insecure and prejudiced about the mirrorless take-over. I've seen few 1Dx and D4 owners use a6000 as their B camera and they love it for sports and wildlife. a6000 has the best AF (intelligence and speed) when you compare it with other DSLRs under 1000 dollars.

Thank Heavens! This is all that you need if you just bought this camera. Mr. Northrup gets you started, and explains the functions clearly and well. Have your camera in your hand when he starts, and follow along. I was panicking, I spent more than a hour watching Mr. Fong and deciding I might have made mistake buying this A6000. Fear not. Watch this video, in stages, and then come back to it. I am stopping now, to buy the book.

Thank you for this outstanding instructional video. After purchasing my new Sony a6000 a week ago, I sat and watched and set up the camera that night. The next two days, spent taking wonderful images that came so much easier, based on this video introducing me to the controls and capabilities. I'm still learning to unleash it's power but wanted to state that the information you provide is suitable for not just a beginner, but well seasoned photographer as well...

Thank you, thank you, thank you! Just bought a Sony A6000 for my husband. This video is perfect for him. I'm going to have to get your books (video versions for my husband though). If those videos are as easy to follow and understand as this one is, my husband will thoroughly enjoy and appreciate his A6000. Again, thank you.

My husband gave me this camera for Christmas (Christmas 2018) and I wanted to learn more about the camera and I am so glad that I had bummped into your UA-cam video! Thank you so much for taking the time to go over so many important stuff, and turning my brain into "scrambled eggs" in the process ;) You made me even more excited about this camera and with the proper notes I took, I am ready to go over them and set my camera up the proper way. I just clicked the "SUBSCRIBE" button, so I am now looking forward on getting your videos to learn more.

I use the menu to adjust the viewfinder. You can actually see the shard contrast of the light text vs the dark background. I am glad that the wheel is small and hard to turn, because this means it does not accidently mess up

Also if you press the center button on focus magnification, you zoom in even better and can set the camera sharp on details that the focus peaking doesn't properly show and it is more exact, too. I often run into trouble when taking picturs of my dog and get the focus peaking in his face but the fine tune via focus magnification + centerbutton zoom shows that it is slightly off. with mid or high focus peaking.

Thank you SO much for this video! I am an amateur and will be getting this camera in a few weeks. I've watched tons and tons of videos on it, reviews and hands on demos and 'tutorials' as I'm worried I won't be able to control it properly and get the most out of it, but this is the only one which has actually helped me! Really appreciate the fact you've taken your time to explain and go through things SLOWLY! So many people go through it so fast and never explain what you'd use certain things for, it's so annoying as a beginner! I'm really excited to get it now, I'm no longer worried about getting lost in the settings now I've found this video! Yay :-)

8 years ago! No wonder you look so young! Well, the thanks are still coming in... This was a great video and helped my ADHD brain finally gain a little familiarity with my A6000. Of course I still want the A7Rv! I'm glad you were able to get through all these intervening years without the knowledge that DPReview would get shuttered (bad camera pun)(ok not bad - horrible). Thank you!
