18 minutes of watching, and I learned so much already. Simple, logical, and with showing the real difference. Now I realize what is Bulb mode, what is difference between low and high F's, and a lot more.Thank you a lot, you have a great diction and totally realize what to talk about. And look solid, also, its way interesting to watch :D
Foster Kerrison I despise Sony manuals. They are a labyrinth of information with lots of dark corners. And they don't even call the camera, "camera". It's the "product", not the camera.
I couldn't agree with you more! I'm ashamed.... but I've had my camera for more than a year and I found the settings so daunting I packed it away. Thank you Tony, I now have a better grip on the settings :)
One of the best tutorials I've ever watched! So well explained. Going to buy your How to Create Stunning Digital Photography book to watch more videos and learn more from you, thanks!
This is extremely helpful! Just bought an A7ii and watched this video 7 years ago still amazing. Have been shooting for here and there for a few years but I learned so much from this video. It's bring a lot value although I was working for a photography education studio (as an marketer) for a year. Good vid very helpful. Thanks!
Hey Tony! I was looking for a training video about the A7II, I'm just at the beginning of the video but I was glad to see your face turn up on top of my search results , quality is always there!
Tony, just wanted to give a huge "thank you" for this video. I'm borrowing a friend's a7 and this is the first legit camera I've ever touched. The lens on the camera is an adapted Nikon 35mm f/2D, so not all of Sony's functionality is available. Even still, this video has helped me a TON to figure out some of the basics of photography. I'm trying to decide between an a6500 and something like an 80D or T6i, so hands-on experience is great, and you're helping me not waste my time with the camera.
All I needed from this video was how to turn off that annoying beep. But watching how well this video was made in definitely watching other vids. Awesome, simple, informative
I am a fairly new photographer and just picked up an a7R II. This was an amazing video, one of the best I’ve ever watched. Thanks so much for putting this together. The explanations and demonstrations were excellent and I just went over to buy your book on Amazon!
Some younger watchers may be wondering where the term 'bulb' comes from. It harks back to the days of the early cameras when the shutter was actuated by compressed air. The mechanism was connected to a flexible pipe to a rubber 'bulb', similar to modern blowers used to remove dust from lenses but smaller. Squeezing the bulb forced air through the pipe to actuate the shutter. An alternative to Adobe Lightroom is the free and (IMO) better darktable.
..receiving my a7 ii today, decided to buy instead of a7r ii for money and kit lens...when a7r iii is released i will upgrade. Tony, as usual you have done a masterful job, my only wish is that you guys reviewed all of my hobbies !!! so if you could develop a love for motorcycling, boating, food, parenting and woodworking it would be helpful. thanks for what you do!!!
I recently bought my first full frame and instead of going with a Nikon or Canon, I purchased a Sony Aii and I felt overwhelmed to learn how to use it. I have watched so many videos and got more frustrated because I did not feel like I was understanding how to get the best use out of my new camera. Today, everything got a lot more clearer for me as I watched your video. Thank you so much!!!!!!
I really like Tony’s teachings. I recently purchased a Sony alpha 7 o’clock to a couple years ago when it first came out. What I like about his teachings on the camera is he makes it very simple and he’s also easy to follow. He also seems like he’s a guy that really cares about about people. He is a phenomenal teacher and I will subscribe to his teachings on this camera. I am dyslexic and even with his teachings I can follow him very easily. Thanks Tony
I agree with all the positive comments, thank you so much this is a great tutorial, I’ve learned more in the first 20 minutes than I have in the last five years owning the camera
Anggun Adi Wrong. It just needs to be SDXC, and yes there are rare 32 and 48GB SDXC cards out there, and they work absolutely fine with XAVC-S. And the reason is not speed advantages of SDXC over SDHC (as there are none), but simply the file system. XAVC-S writes files larger than 2GB and that is not supported by SDHC which are formatted with FAT32. This is the sole reason.
I just got a new Sony a7. You explain this camera in simple terms so the complex becomes understandable. In fact I plan to purchase your book(s) so I can be a much better photographer. Thank you so much. Your tutorials are amazing indeed!!
I've been watching your video tutorials for a few years now and they are Spot On! I have the A7Rii and I've been trying to get it to do Phase Detection focus points. Well you just solved why I can't find the feature. The A7Rii is not equipped with it. Only the A7ii and other models. Thank You Tony Northrup!
I think ISO stands for International Standards Organisation, and relates to a standard measurement of film (and now sensor) sensitivity. It replaces historical DIN, ASA, BSI and other national standards and earlier proprietary standards.
found this extremely useful! just got my sony a7ii yesterday and watched this video the day before and almost instantly knew what to do! A good friendly voice with a bit of humor goes a long way, thanks! :)
Olympus has a color wheel for adjusting color including hue and saturation. It s fantastic. There is no need to experiment with white balance settings.
Best camera tuturial ever. Full of useful information conveyed articulately and with with humour, I watched it right through, Something I rarely do. Thanks Tony :)
I'm looking to upgrade to a mirrorless camera and am thinking of making the switch from Canon to Sony...this video was really helpful to me. Thank you!
Thank you so much! Your delivery of information is so clean and on point. I appreciate being able to jump around in the video and I will be back many times to this tutorial I'm sure. :)
I have just graduated to my first full frame camera, the A7 ii, from traditional Panasonic Superzooms, which are good. I took it out of the box and was totally bewildered at all of the controls on the A7 ii. Finding your video has been fantastic, because it helped me find the shooting modes and settings, that I usually used on my Panasonic. One problem, this A7, just while following you on the video, my battery drain has been significant. I normally with the Panasonic can get at least 350 photos. I figured out how to cut off the monitor on the A7 (I've always preferred the viewfinder only), and the cut off the auto pre-focus. What other setting can I cut off, that is absolutely not necessary for most of the photos I would take. NOTE: I do outdoor landscaping and skylines 90% of the time. Also note that you say you primarily use the top focus area. I was always taught to use the center weighted focus (the 3rd one down). Advantages or disadvantages?
Just taken the plunge and purchased a second hand Sony A7ii (body only). Migrating from micro four thirds. As funds stretched, will start by adapting my collection of vintage lenses until I can afford new Sony FE lens. Useful information for me in your tutorial, thank you so much.
Hi T, sincerely, thank you and Chelsea. I've learned so much, from my first full frame (6d) to my present one (a7rii). When I started I followed your advice to invest in lenses, I wound up buying Canon 24-70 & 70-200 L's and now I own those plus a couple primes (a zeiss f4 16-35, and Canon 50 1.8). I've thoroughly enjoyed all. And on that note, and on the off chance someone is still reading this, T&C do a great job reminding folks to have fun within their means. All is much appreciated. After watching y'all for a year I've finally purchased your books this morning, will review after I've read. Have a good'n👍
Thanks Tony, you always explain things so clearly, it's such a valuable skill to have! The A7 mk1 has come down in price so much now I couldn't ignore it any longer. Thanks to your video I feel well prepared to tackle their notorious menu system. Cheers!
This is kind of random but I recognize that building at 15:41 :) Our family has a cottage next to the beach it’s on, it’s about a 5 minute walk to get up close. We have fantasized about sneaking in and exploring many times.
Nice job putting out a concise and well thought out a7ii tutorial. Its mid February 2021 and the price of this camera body w zoom lens and other junk has dropped to under a grand. Im not sure how much longer Sony will sell this ageing model. However, buying a well made, full frame body with a decent auto/anti-vibration zoom lens, for this price, is amazing. Not to mention having the ability to use older, cheap 35mm film lenses. (From any manufacturer) Well... it's just a crazy good deal! I'm sure your going to get a lot of additional views on this video and you should. Great Job!!!
What is not to like about this tutorial? Excellent! Thank you sooo much, Tony! Many long standing mysteries were either solved or clarified, and not for just this particular Sony model. Many of these menu items and concepts actually cross over into the later "A" mount camera menus, like my old A-77II. Very well done! I will be watching it several more times, until I know it all by heart! PS - for many years I did not know "ISO" was actually a word, not an acronym. Not only does it make someone who knows it "Look: a lot smarter. And it is a great piece of trivia as well! Thank you so much again!
I can honestly state that you are the guy who taught me how to take good photos! Your books that I have are fantastic! Thank you so much for your work Tony!
I really appreciate this video. Fact that its broken up with the index, you're realistic take on everything, the occasional jokes. I love it! I'm new to digital but familiar with film so the settings and menus are the least appealing part of going digital and this video simplifies things a ton and gets the basics worked out as well as some more advanced stuff. Thank you!
Awesome tutorial! Me and my sister cooperated and got the new Sony a7R-II (and those exact lens Zeiss 1.8/55mm), and she's the experienced one (though not with Sony's cameras), while I'm complete newbie. So this video was GREAT help!
I was terrified by the length of this video but honestly this video was so informative and clear it was a blast learning. Thank you so much for the break down your great at what you do.
Thank you so much. After searching on UA-cam for days to find a video that shows me how to use my A7rii I came across your video. Amazing job thanks for helping people like me. 🙏🏻
I’ve been eying this vid for about a year now wanting to watch it bc it’s so long but I finally did it and it was well worth it. Now I know everything about my camera
terrific tutorial. just got the a7rii and this review is the best i've found. So inspiring actually that I've turned off my sound, purchased a copy of both your books and the neewer stimer. Youre the man tony, thanks for your time and effort.
@2:38 wrong recomondation for the memorycard. XAVC-S records up to 50MegaBIT/sec (6,25MB/s) AVCHD (3,5MB/s). So you need a ordanary Class 10 memorycard. If you shooting stills you need a mutch faster card. NOT FOR VIDEO
Thanks for this. I note many of your product recommendations are no longer available, probably because the video was done more than two years ago. I'd appreciate an update of those sections.
You don't need to purchase a trigger remote it's built it in the camera already and allows you to use your phone via Wifi to to take long exposure shots in Bulb mode. Just download the app it's free from Sony.(Play Memories Mobile) works really good.
I've just upgraded from a Panasonic G5 to a Sony A7 as I feel it's time to step up to a full frame sensor. I'm a Kinaesthetic/Visual learner and find manuals to be a massive chore to read so this tutorial was perfect to fill in the gaps of bits I hadn't figured out for myself. I'll definitely be purchasing SDP now ;)
Hey, I recently bought the Sony Alpha A7 and a 16mm F2.8 lens to go with it. I watched this video the whole way through with my camera in front of me and really appreciate all the advice and wisdom you put out to help photographers become accustomed to new kit!
very informative video so much info to absorb but incredibly well presented...I am a fan of BBF and have been for years now Im running into a bit of a learning curve with my newest acquisition...Tony for some reason when I try to set Back button focus on my A7ii when going into the menu gear four then six...and scrolling down to custom key settings ...my custom button 3 is locked on AF/MF control Hold, .....cant find and AF on button...where exactly should I set this in the opening drop down menu for this particular camera.....A7ii...
Tony, I just bought my first mirrorless alpha 7 and this video saved me a lot of time to understand the why’s and put the initial configuration. Plus I learned the way to go with future lens purchases. Thank you a lot. I did like, subscribed and will buy your book. Great work, thanks again.
Hi, Tony. Fantastic tutorial. 1)Would I need to buy a flash for indoor photos with the A7r2? 2) If so which one would you recommend? 3)Is it silly not to buy photoshop lightroom 6 with a camera like this? 4)vIs this camera much more comfortable (lighter) than the Nikon D810? Thank you!
Wow! what an incredibly well put together video. every part of it was fantastic, I especially appreciate you breaking down the video in the description! definitely will be hanging out in my favorites
I did understand why I need to set "shutter speeds" while choosing to record video. Does the camera knows what to do once I tell her I will record video? What happens if I don't set it as you say? Thanks for the vid.
Outstanding series!!! Thanks!!! One note: The only issue I personally have with keeping it on Continuous Shooting mode. Is that the shutter does have a finite amount of cycles before it fails.
Very nice Tutorial. I recently purchased a Sony A7ii and have a Sony 24-240mm FE 3.5-6.3 Lens. I purchased this camera so I can take actions shots of my son playing football. His games are played at night and the pictures typically come out with noise in the background. I know that High School Football Lights are not the best, but what is the best settings for my particular set up to take the best action shots? Thank you in advance.
Great video, Thanks! My local camera shop would thank you if they knew I watched it! I've been running back and forth to the store with ALL my questions - they are most likely tired of me. YOUR video answered so many questions and now when I've forgotten something, all I have to do is review your video! Thank you!
Just bought the a7 mk2 and have been experimenting with it over the past few days. This has been a really clear, helpful and well made video for someone new to taking digital photography seriously like myself. Learning back button focus was a revelation, looking forward to playing with it. Will definitely check out the books as well! Thank you.
+Tony Northrup I have to be honest. Between AF Lock and Eye AF , I'm finding myself using backbutton focus far less often then on my Canon. Still very useful but maybe less so than prior IMO. @tombeynon Definitely bookmark this as its far handier than the manual, I did it with the A6000 video and it saved me alot of time.
Tony, thank you for your superb, objective and clear videos!! I'm among one of tens of thousands of followers. And thank you for publishing those awesome books as well. Your choice of words and pacing of speech is how others should use as benchmark.
Tony, buena tarde. Sería genial que pudieras habilitar los subtítulos en este vídeo ya que mi inglés no es tan bueno y sería de gran ayuda para seguir tu entrenamiento. De antemano, gracias.
SOrry Tony. ISO is an acronym for International Standards Organization. That organization sets standards for a myriad of technologies and processes. The European version of this organization is DIN. So you may hear of ISO 9000 compliance and also, the Car deck head unit is DIN. Both these tell you something about the product so you know how it will be compatible with other products such as cars, ships cameras, audio components, etc. Hope that helps. Awesome videos by the way.
Hi, thank you so much for excellent tutorial. I have one question regarding "Adapting Lenses". I have sony a7ii and Tamaron 28-200m. Which value I need to use: 28 or 200? Thank you in advance for your answer. Greetings from Greece, elwira
THIS was the best tutorial on UA-cam I was wondering if you could help me with some dental photography I shoot with a canon with a 1-1 lens external flash hot shoe have you ever done any dental photography ? in a macro lens? How would I contact you to discuss how to set the a7 2 up
Hi Tony, Thanks a lot for this immensely helpful video. Just bought my A7M2 a week ago & after seeing this video, it makes it much easier to use this beautiful camera. Thanks again & keep posting.......
Thank you so much Tony. This by far is the best A7RII tutorial I have found. I am coming from Canon and am struggeling a bit to get my head around all the controls of the Sony camera. Well done!

I very rarely put likes on videos but this one deserves it. Thank you very much.
Thanks for the review, Just purchased a used (condition 10) A7ll. Looking through the view finder I see stray light like using a collide-scope. The pictures are in focus but I can't tell before shooting because of the poor picture. What am I seeing?
Thanks a lot for your video. This is my first digital camera and without your help I would never be able to understand the manual, which is really overwhelming for an ignorant like me. Interesting the option of manual lenses, they are certainly cheaper and seems that the quality is alright. I would prefer to shot manual. Anyone can tell me if the photometer still works for these lenses. Thanks in advance for your help. Cheers, Ed
Thank you so much for the long video about the Sony A 7 . I learned so much from it. I bought the A 7 with kit lens because it was on offer and my M9 is away for repair and I wanted a full frame camera to use the Leica lenses. I am having great fun with the new camera; it is so versatile. Before your video I was baffled by the alternate options offered, but now am beginning to understand them. It is much more difficult to use than the M9 and I miss the DNG raw files of the Leica

I didn't see the 24-70 f/2.8 gm mentioned. Is that because of the size and price?
24-70 is the kit lens with sony a7 III.Thank you so much. You make amazing videos.
Everything except the lens I already have :(
Where is the video tutorial mentioned for the Sony A7sII?
Can you reply with a link?
This is a hidden Gem who still here in 2024?

Just got a7r couple days ago. Much appreciated guide
Yep, it's my GO to tutorial. Great stuff indeed

This was a million times more informative than Sony's manual! Thanks so much!
Foster Kerrison I despise Sony manuals. They are a labyrinth of information with lots of dark corners. And they don't even call the camera, "camera". It's the "product", not the camera.
5 years later this is still helping people, love my new sony a7ii!
I have been doing photography for a while and have watched numerous videos. But your description of f stop and aperture is the best I’ve ever heard
I love your simple, down to earth and jargon-free explanations and your relaxed, chatty delivery.
I been trying understand my Sony 7Rii camera. This tutorial was the best for accomplishing that task.
Thanks a million, George

49:28 You're showing the wrong memory card recomendation. Minimum capacity of SDXC to be able to record XAVC-S is 64GB Class 10.
Anggun Adi Wrong. It just needs to be SDXC, and yes there are rare 32 and 48GB SDXC cards out there, and they work absolutely fine with XAVC-S. Lofote OK. Thank you for correcting.
Lofote sadly you cant Format a 32gb sdhc card in exfat. The camera dont lat you record in it.
Yeah :( You actually can format a SDHC card in ExFAT but the camera checks the card itself if its SDXC, so it won't work.
I think the Batis series lenses are worth mentioning as far as sharpness goes now.
BEST SONY TUTORIAL IN UA-cam PERIOD !!!! Loved it made me comfortable & confident with the camera
Just got an AR7II -- and this is by far the best tutorial. Anywhere.

+blueckaym Glad I could help!
Holy Cow!! What a video!! Picked up my first Sony this week and this tutorial is amazing!! Thank you!
I am new to photography and I just got a Sony a7ii camera. Your video helped me a lot to understand my camera. Thank you :)
This is one of the best tutorials I have ever watched, really clear and very informative, Thank you!
+rguttfield Thanks, and you're welcome!
I watched this video the whole way through with my camera in front of me and really appreciate all the advice and wisdom you put out to help photographers become accustomed to new kit!
very informative video so much info to absorb but incredibly well presented...I am a fan of BBF and have been for years now Im running into a bit of a learning curve with my newest acquisition...Tony for some reason when I try to set Back button focus on my A7ii when going into the menu gear four then six...and scrolling down to custom key settings ...my custom button 3 is locked on AF/MF control Hold, .....cant find and AF on button...where exactly should I set this in the opening drop down menu for this particular camera.....A7ii...
have to watch couple times to understand my camera; thank you , its already help me alot
Thank you!
The best tutorial ever on Sony camera!
Wow! what an incredibly well put together video. every part of it was fantastic, I especially appreciate you breaking down the video in the description! definitely will be hanging out in my favorites
Used this to navigate the Sony A7S ii I just rented from Samys here in LA. SOOOO SO helpful man. Legit. Thanks!
Great video! One of the best if not thee best camera/photography tutorial videos I've ever seen. Thank you so much.
You mentioned that you were going to cover more on the Sony A7s video side, is there anything on this issue, or maybe coming up?? Thanks
Great video, Thanks! My local camera shop would thank you if they knew I watched it! I've been running back and forth to the store with ALL my questions - they are most likely tired of me. YOUR video answered so many questions and now when I've forgotten something, all I have to do is review your video! Thank you!
I was about to toss this Sony A711 until you got me on track with Focus...thanks Tony....I watched this particular tutorial 5 times...
Just bought the a7 mk2 and have been experimenting with it over the past few days. This has been a really clear, helpful and well made video for someone new to taking digital photography seriously like myself. Learning back button focus was a revelation, looking forward to playing with it. Will definitely check out the books as well! Thank you.
+Tom Beynon Thanks, Tom! Glad to help.

THIS was the best tutorial on UA-cam
I was wondering if you could help me with some dental photography
I shoot with a canon with a 1-1 lens
external flash
hot shoe
have you ever done any dental photography ?
in a macro lens?
How would I contact you to discuss how to set the a7 2 up
Unfortunately Sony RAW is compressed RAW. Most of the time you won't notice it, but sometimes you will see compression artifacts.
Also missing on the BULB setting is that you cannot be in silent shooting or you cannot scroll to BULB
Thanks for the review, Just purchased a used (condition 10) A7ll. Looking through the view finder I see stray light like using a collide-scope. The pictures are in focus but I can't tell before shooting because of the poor picture. What am I seeing?
Very nice tutorial guys, I just got myself today a Sony 7II and I really feel comfortable in using it by just watching your tutorial. Thank you.
Cheers, Ed
Interested in an a7ii.
I'll be using this to streamline my understanding.
Thank you for all your photography demystifying and mythbusting.
My back display does not show up. Can someone please tell me how I can get this display to appear again?!!!! 😖
