Poetry in motion! Thanks Jamil for not only keeping up with Jim but also to wield the camera the way you did to capture all this stunning footage. Take a bow!
I found this video out a week ago, and i've literally had it on repeat since. While i'm working, this is the background noise. It's literally perfect. No fuss, no interview, no huge editing and CGI, just continuous, raw footage of one of the best out there. Amazing!
8yrs later and this is still just as amazing as day 1. It's the gold standard. Hearing him say that he got to the river (down the 6.5mi S. Kaibab Trail) in 39-40 minutes, just further shows the insanity of this FKT, and Jim's incredible trail running skill.
@@wcomalley Please be more specific with what you're asking: 1) The previous record for what...an R2 or an R3? Jim holds both, from just this one run. 2) How long does it take to get to the river, from which trail, and which side of the Canyon? Hiking? Backpacking? Normal trail running? Or full send sprinting by an elite like Jim? You can hear Jim say in the video that he went down S. Kaibab Trail, (which is 6.5mi to the entrance to Black Bridge, and 5,000' of elevation drop) and that it took him 39 to 40 minutes. This is so fast, that it's just impossible to fathom. Look at the trail conditions as shown by UA-camr Rubi Hammer, in 4K, and watch my recent run there: ua-cam.com/video/vhz72W_aZKg/v-deo.html and you'll see how incredible Jim's run is. 3) They mention the previous record at the start of the video, and it was several hours longer than Jim's 2 and change.
Jamil, Jim's achievement is impressive, but it is personal and ephemeral. What you have created here is athletically impressive, in keeping pace with the fastest person ever to run the Grand Canyon, but it is also artistically impressive. As a work of art, rather than being only personal to Jim and you, and rather than being only ephemeral, available to experience just in the moment of its making, in this short film you have created and shared something that is potentially accessible to all and enduring through time. I'm not denigrating athletic achievement in making this comparison. As a life-long athlete, I deeply appreciate this fundamental aspect of what you have presented here. I celebrate the embodied excellence! But I can only do that, in this instance, because of your work of art. Art is the symbolic communication of individual human experience, making the embodied and particular moment universal and available to all. Thank you for doing this, Jamil!
I ran the Grand Canyon years ago, and it was a peak running experience. Looking at the scenery now, I'm stunned at the beauty. Thanks for reminding me of the wonder of the Grand Canyon. A tip for those planning to do the run: Leave at early dawn so that you meet the mule teams going down as you go up. You don't want to be caught by them going your way since you can't pass them.
Sunday, 1/23/22 It’s my first time watching this video. And, can I repeat what others have said about the recording. This cameraman kicked ass! At first I thought there was a professional mountain bike cyclist recording! To be able to keep up with Jim and capture those angles and scenery is epic! Great job guys!
+Run Steep Get High - Jamil - you are amazing! Not only were you keeping up with Walmsley's gnarly technical descent, you were filming! Incredible! Thanks for sharing this amazing footage ; I loved every second of it!!!
Ok I was wrong, Jamil this is the best thing ever. Amazing job following the Walmmer!!! This will be my go to video for motivation to run for quite a while. Edit update, 10/07/16 I've now watched this video 4 times, amazing.
Jim leaves NK trailhead at 5:10 into the video, and arrives at redwall bridge, (the 5k mark) at 23:35. This is the most effortless 18:25 5K I’ve ever seen
That's what I'd call working for your art. Very cool to see! Thanks Jim and Jamil! These Jim Jam sessions just make me smile! This epic moment, the Walmsley Cal Street sighting, the Mountain Outpost Walmsley Strava record breaking........Too much cool for just one you tube video to handle.
Such a great vid! I tried running along on my treadmill and almost ate it like 20 times! Tough to stay straight when there are so many twists and turns in the trail.
How hilarious would it be if Walmsley just stopped And then the cameraman stops and then he’s like dude! I forgot my wallet? smirks says just kidding and starts running again
watching this has taken me on a spiritual journey, I keep wondering if you'd ever take a moment to sink it this mesmerizing beautiful nature trail but also amazed at how much you perserve and push yourself, it's spectacular to watch and very motivating to actually trail here one day, thank for this edit and for the video overall, hope you achieve your dreams!!
Jamil.. This is the #Sickest video Ive ever watched. Thanks. #SoSick... I just zone out on it & get into a flow state watching. #MimicThatRunningLong..... Good job Bro... Great run...
I believe I saw Jim training on 4/5/2022, running up South Kaibab as I was running down. I tried to find any posts on FaceBook, InstaGram or Twitter to confirm it was him, but he's been pretty quiet since January 2022. I have video of him running by me, I had my GoPro attached to my chest as I was going (walking!) down.
What's more impressive than watching Jim bomb down...its knowing a camera man had to try and stay with Jim and film him....if I could keep up you would hear nothing but me huffing and puffing the entire way...
Reminiscent of Joel Wolpert's short film "depressions" where he follows Rob Krar for a 30 mile run in the canyon. I'm sure you know Joel personally his films are inspirational. But yours are getting better and better every time I watch them. You can really tell your becoming more accustomed to running with the camera. Can't wait for more content...BTW the new one you did on the Barkley is great also

I'm trying my first ultra soon. Will it work to hammer descents over 40miles? I'm planning to pace uphills and hammer down the descents but I'd imagine it would take its toll.
In 2002, at age 50 I backpacked from the South to the North and back. I was a fit 3:12 marathoner. I stayed one tent-camp night at the ranch then up the 15 miles to the north rim (brutal as this was around August 8). I rested and enjoyed the north rim for 3 days to recover and then ditched some of my weight (the tent, etc.) as I got a room at the ranch lodge near the river. I was still carrying almost 30 pounds (which was 20% of my body weight) I stayed the night and the hiked up to the South Rim lodges the next morning. I took one day to recover and went back home. The notion that someone could run R2R2R and not fall to serious injury or death is beyond me. But seeing is believing. Right after the video stops, where there is the bridge in the near distance, at some point one has to traverse a section that is literally cut into the (is it?) granite (rock wall). Imagine a tunnel drilled through the rock that is I guess 200+ yards long - about 4-5 feet wide and maybe 7' high or less. It is almost straight. HOWEVER, it isn't a complete tunnel as the entire "left" side (east=facing) is open to the chasm. I heard it is a 400 foot drop - almost exactly vertical and absolutely no possibility of surviving. So one is running along a 4'-5' wide "trail" cut into the rock. There are a very few sporadic small bushes just to make it interesting and they are sometimes close to the wall side - moving you to the cliff. There are also those angled logs ON the trail that divert rainwater over the cliff - to minimize erosion over time. Just walking over those is scary. I cannot imagine even slow jogging that section. It is so scary that a man, a dentist who was with his teenager kids (2) warned me at Phantom Ranch as I was heading north that i was at risk of falling there with my back-pack extending above my head a bit. So he purposefully got behind me and grabbed a strap hoping to pull me back from the bring if I happened to trip or the top of my backpack scratched the wall or the "ceiling'. This is truly an amazing feat. Kudos to Mr. Walmsley.
A top job capturing such a beastly run. I presume you used your Osmo and Rode mic? Did you also run with a screen or just 'eye ball' the framing? I'm keen to get one and if it stands up to runs like this then it much be reasonable!
Run Steep Get High thanks for your answer. There seems to be a rattle in the audio. Is that the camera or something else. I love hearing the crunch under foot.
One of my favorite trail running videos ever! So good. I rewatch this again and again.
Heart and grit...with a touch of tenacity. Awe inspiring to watch
Also, Jamil long time first time. My man. Keep pushing
Poetry in motion! Thanks Jamil for not only keeping up with Jim but also to wield the camera the way you did to capture all this stunning footage. Take a bow!
I must have watched this 3 or 4 times, such beautiful scenery at a wonderful time of year
Jamal Jamal Jamal Jamal!!!!! what can I say...Incredible camera work!! memorizing!! thankyou. love to see Jim in action wow!
I came because of Walmsley and stayed due to the camera man. Holy sheeeet brother.....gj!!!
This rig though...stable...this in frame chase is unreal.
Just seeing this for the first time, Jamil. That was truly special.
This is so therapeutic to watch. Great vid.

Revisiting this -it's the perfect thing to watch while stuck on the treadmill because Northern California is on fire. Thanks for this.
One of the best running videos on UA-cam! Thanks Jamil.

That steepness looks familiar. and he is running it uphill, at an incredible pace. Wow, just bloody WOW.
That was simply amazing! The views....wow. Camera man is legit.

Pretty epic camera system you devised. You were spot on every second. I think everyone watching felt like we were running with Jim. Thank you.
Keeping him framed up through all those tight turns was impressive (even with a wide lens)!
Thanks
This is by far the Best running video of a Great Legend. Thanks for that chase...and what you do. Keep it up and Keep chasing Jim for us.
