I am an American who came to Seoul, Korea 17 years ago, intending to stay for just a year or two. However, I liked it so much that I ended up living here for 17 years.
I have no plans to return to the States.

Unlike other foreigners, your interest in learning and enjoying the Korean language is likely to make your experience in Korea more enjoyable.
Foreigners who do not learn Korean and show no interest in Korean culture tend to focus only on Korea's flaws, dismiss Korean culture, and, in severe cases, even disrespect Koreans.
These people often find it difficult to live in Korea, struggle to make friends with Koreans, and eventually leave Korea, they believe it is Korea's fault for them to leave.
I think your mindset is very mature :)

Everyone can have an opinion and when you like a country so much you can criticise it too. It is from their 애정 toward that country. You would complain about the country you like so much if you live there long enough. 잘 품어주려는 생각보다는 한국에 대한 비판 일절 허용하지 않고 싫으면 돌아가라는 식의 그런 가르치려는 댓글 솔직히 진짜 몰상식해 보임.

How courageous you are to move to Korea and how wonderful that you love living there! I am a Korean and moved to the US from Korea in 2002 and am still living here. As some people mentioned below, the most important thing is to find where you fit the best. Some people never leave where they were born and grew up and if it works out for them, It's great and some brave souls like yourself move so far to have a better life..I think it takes guts, trust, and deep thought process etc..
I am also so moved that you are able to admit the fact that you didn't deeply bond with your parents. I think accepting that truth must be so liberating for you and your truthful insight will lead you to a more authentic-burden free life..Congratulations!!!

Same, though. I came to Busan in 2013 and have been here ever since. I have a child now, which makes me sometimes think living back home in Minnesota would be nice. However, Korean health care, safety, convenience, and cost of living are much better than in the U.S., especially with a child. Don't get me wrong, Korea has its cons and difficulties, but if you learn the language and culture things will start opening up.

@@dripxenseixensei3822 in general, yes, it is safe. People leave their phones on the tables in the restaurants or walk with open bags. However, sometimes (once a week, I use public transportation everyday) I can see mentally disabled people who make noise and scare others. Also, sometimes Koreans say something inappropriate in Korean (thinking that we foreigners cant understand). Like today in front elevator couple with a baby, the woman said in Korean to her husband “don’t you think that youngsters should use escalators?” I didn’t want to talk back. But the escalator was out of order.

    • @dripxenseixensei3822

@@orshepeic thank you for taking the time to respond, I appreciate that. I know some people or haters tend to spread misinformation, so I wanted to hear from your perspective since you said that you are finally at peace. I also want peace. I don’t have a close or great relationship with my family. Many times, they made me feel worthless, not acknowledging the positive aspects of my personality, my acts of kindness and so on. Their mindset is very different from mine which makes us incompatible and makes me want to get away from them and move to a country that aligns with me. So South Korea is my dream country - the culture and people matches my personality, therefore I would be happy, comfortable and at peace living there. I’m happy for you 🤗, and I’m excited to be at peace when I move to South Korea.

the only things I could think of is probably not being able to build a retirement nest egg or develop a strong resume due to less career options for immigrants, and the fact that your family and friends are in the States. If I want to get citizenship, how does it compare to Western nations such as New Zealand, Canada, Australia, Netherlands etc?

Last year for the 1st time, Kor-population increased little bit suddenly, ending the long down trending curve, because of dramatic increases of foreigners. And the infusion of foreigners from all over the world, will be more increasing for sure by the popularity of K- cultures. So Korea will make easy many laws relating with foreigners but it will take a little bit a time. But Foreign population will be a part of Korea sooner or later. It’s inevitable. I’m a Korean.
