Many of you may not understand why Nana looks so "unrealistically" surprised (even stunned) when she hears Shin's bass. Some may think "oh gosh, whoever has the fundamental skills of a bassist can just play the song according to the music score", but the truth is that, the music score Shin is looking at 0:13 is, in fact, only the guitar part -- he is not given the bass part. He is supposed to improvise based on the guitar part, as you may have seen in 0:13 when he is fiddling around on his bass. He is not playing according to the music score; he is improvising according to the guitar part. And when he finishes improvising (and Nana is surprised how fast Shin is), he stuns the other two members with [almost] exactly the same bass as Ren has produced.
Lol! Still got people responded to this comment. Glad this good anime gets the attention it deserves. In fact, I can barely disagree with you on that part, as Punk is sometimes considered by a few people "brutally straightforward" (not going to comment on this part though) . So yup, it SEEMS that "you don't even need a score to improvise". It SEEMS. For me personally, I still believe that the bass part of "Rose" is -- using the simplest vocabulary -- cool, powerful, stylish, and memorable. The thing is, when you mentioned "... you only need to know in what key the guitar is...", I assume that you meant the typical repetitive bass notes that aligns with the power chords, which does appear in Shin's improvisation. However, Shin's bass cover also contains many subtle yet interesting nuances, like the choice of jumping an octave or the insertion of a brief solo. This is what makes this bass cover so good, because it preserves the power and spirit within Punk music, while sometimes surprising the audience with interesting bass melody. And this is typical bass. People with superficial understanding of music always sarcastically dismisses its importance and downplays its function as well as potential musical complexity by saying "yeah? you only need to know in what key the guitar is...". Cheers to all bass players. Thank you all for making great songs.
Yeah, maybe someone has already mentioned it but they were surprised because his "sound" was like Ren's. Right after this, Shin even said that he was his favorite bassist and Nana told him to play better than Ren.
Actually, in the manga they are covering 'Seventeen' by the Sex Pistols, which Ren has covered in their official remaster of the album with the band itself, and Shin is playing the bass part exactly like Ren does, and that's why they are so surprised. But sadly, in the anime, to avoid copyright problems they went with 'rose' as the audition for Shin
Why is everybody bashing? They aren't surprised because he can play well, they are surprised because he plays just like Ren, the old bassist in the band....
I love it when you can hear just the base and then it transitions to a shot of Ren, like you can see and hear exactly what nana is thinking in that moment
I was 16 years when I watched this anime and saw it through a teenagers eyes. Now youtube randomly recommends me this video after 17 years. Im 33 years old now and remembering it but through the eyes of an adult..
While Nobu's playing he's got a Gibson Les Paul, but then after Shin's playing wows them into silence and Nana's cigarette burns her you can see Nobu's guitar is now magically a Fender Stratocaster.
Her beautiful raspy voice gives me goosebumps all over my body 😍😭 that’s why after watching Nana anime I’ve become very much of her fan. She’s the best Nana! 🤘🏻❤️🔥🎶
Hey Lucia I wanna tell you something...And it's goes kinda like this...THIS VIDEO IS THE BEST ...MY FAV>>>>THE WAY SHIN PLAY"S GUITAR BASS IT"S PERFECT>>DOn't have wards :D
@xxtsubasa Shin is using a black Fender Precision Bass. What I'm talking about Nobu's guitar. At twenty-five seconds he clearly has a Gibson Les Paul, but at one-minute and forty-one seconds he has a Fender Stratocaster. Just a small animation model mistake.
I really don't think Nana's thinking about "DGCF"," EADG", and whatever the hell else when there's a shot of REN on the screen. Guys, this is ANIME, not MUSIC CLASS. And a SHOUJO one at that.
@animeandvgmusicgeek Or DADG for my case and lots of other bassists. kind of weird at first we we get used to it quickly! and its easier when in your set you need both standard E and drop D, you can drop the 1st string in 1sec between two songs. let ring the 3rd D string then then let ring the E and drop it until both sounds the same, then you got your D ;)
@Ra1zeRazZ it's the opening song for the anime. "Rose" by Anna Tsuchiya though for this song she is often credited as Anna "inspi'NANA" (BLAST) or something like that. anyway, the song should be easy to find. Also, give Kuroi Namida a listen too. It's another great song by the same artist for the same anime
@yankeesfan2006 Ren's not a baka! Takumi sure was and always will be, but Ren only has baka moments. You'll miss him if they ever make a season 2 of nana :(
I loved watching it back in high school 2006-2009. Anime didn’t cover well all of the manga like most anime doesn’t but I think the manga has been on hiatus for a long time. But yes it’s an awesome anime :)
@SinfulCreed lol that is pretty rude. I play bass and use both finger and pick. Try playing Parallel Universe by Red Hot Chilli Peppers without a pick lol you will get so tired by the end.
proof that bass makes everything better
When I see that this video is from 13 years ago......
I start crying
What is this anime?
@@naufal6163 nana
Cry and light a cigarette
I know what you mean. I'm 32 and still cry when I hear this.most underrated anime ever...

I've just finished nana and this scene was the most impressive one

Shin made me love bass.
Ana Filipe You mean Ren? 😁

i still get a thrill shiver when hearing this part
I wish we could hear it in the full song

We’re the same age , I also saw this back then and watching this clip made me feel all my teenage emotions again.

When i tell you i fell in love with the bass the whole song the voice litteraly everything... I mean it 😭
This whole scene is about Ren.
Now i want to be in the band and play bass guitar 😅
This way is better than the normal way they play it
yeah. I love the bass solo he does at the end.
Her beautiful raspy voice gives me goosebumps all over my body 😍😭 that’s why after watching Nana anime I’ve become very much of her fan. She’s the best Nana! 🤘🏻❤️🔥🎶
this wants me to have a bass only instrumental of rose
As a bass player that stop playing way to early this makes me fall back in love with the bass
As someone who is almost 40 I can no longer watch this show. Mid life crisis is triggering cuz I watched this when I was 18…so many memories

@JebusGrist What do you mean? His guitar was always a Black/White Strat... The Les Paul shown here was Nobu's...
@technicality1
Its ok to play with a Pick.It just depend of what kind of Sound you want.
Bought a 150$ bass yesterday because of this clip. It comes in Friday, hopefully I'm good.
The bass is so sexy wtf
If that guy can magically turn his Gibson into a Fender, then maybe I can magically turn my Ibanez into a Rickenbacker. :)

I really don't think Nana's thinking about "DGCF"," EADG", and whatever the hell else when there's a shot of REN on the screen.
