Paul changed the key for her so she could play it on the banjo, which meant he had to relearn HIS own tune, and two influential lines of lyrics. A beautiful, generous gift to all of us. What a treasure they both are.
I just heard you for the first time. O my God you are awesome. I live in the country on five acres. I sat in my front porch and was amazed. Amazed you. Thank you
I didn’t know Rhiannon at all. Came to my feed as I’m a big Paul Simon fan. What a treat? She’s a blessing on one of PS’s wonderful examples of Americana poetry.
I love both these geniuses. I was 20, living in Paris with little access to American music, when Paul Simon released American Tune. My brother came to visit and brought me a copy. Such a sad song about our country’s problems at that time, especially the Vietnam War, yet still imbued with the hopefulness that America represented. I was so moved by the lyric change, from “we came on a ship they call the Mayflower” to Rhiannon’s “we didn’t come on the Mayflower.” All our history deserves to be represented, even the painful parts.
I used to listen to this song in my dorm room at university in the 1970's on the opposite coast from my family. It's a great song for feeling like you have company in being alone, if that makes sense.
Saw clips of her several years ago and was blown away! The very first albumn i ever bought with my babysitting money was "sounds of silence". It broke my heart This is real music. Real musice breaks or uplifts your heart.
Rhiannon has 'got that thing'. She's so poised and regal, lovely, of course, and beyond being a great singer and instrumentalist, she's so charismatic. She's just got 'presence'. She's one of those folks when she walks on stage you suddenly have to pay attention.
Timeless and resonant song that was great when Paul first recorded it, given new life and meaning through Rhiannon's gorgeous performance. Two generations of heart felt talent.
I've heard this song a thousands times but NO ONE sings it so powerfully as Rhiannon! Besides her incredibly beautiful voice, with every word, with every chord, she transmits conviction, integrity and humility. Wish we could clone her. By the way, she has many other beautiful songs - please check them out!
Thank you for taking the time to post this. I've heard this song countless times and never once stopped to contemplate the profound lyrics until now. Thanks to Rhiannon Giddens for bringing it home to me.
Thank you SO much for posting this! I have been a Paul Simon fan since the '60's and am so very pleased to having my aging ears introduced to Ms Giddens. I had heard her name but had NO IDEA how lovely her voice is. Again, thank you, thank you, thank you. I didn't even know Simon had had a Grammy Salute. He is a treasure in his own right. Blessings to you.
Every time I hear her sing I hear something new. This time as I listened it occurred to me what a beautiful duet she could have done with Gordon Lightfoot. Guess you can't have it all.
She performed this song again at Ojai Music Festival on Friday night and spoke about Paul changing two lines in the song for her to perform it with him. I had noticed it when I watched this special on TV last week. But didn’t think more about it until she explained on stage at Ojai. Simply stunning. She is a genius. We are so lucky to be able to enjoy the art she produces and the collaborations she makes possible. They premiered OMAR the opera - world premiere on stage at Ojai (and streamed) last night. Again. Breath-taking.
Thanks for the upload! I've since found the entire tribute (Homeward Bound: A Grammy Salute to the Songs of Paul Simon) prerecorded in April 2022 and linked it below. This song is at 1:16:23 near the end of the program. ua-cam.com/video/wEivUgsbwOs/v-deo.html
“a colored singer”…you should at least make the effort to move into the. 21st century. You know know those “ colored people” make up 2/3s of the world’s population. You’re in the last 1/3. Perspective needed here.
That's exactly right. We came here on a European ship soaked in blood from the barbaric savage Columbus who slaughtered children to the genocidal colonists who slaughtered the natives who were naively kind to them to the Confederate slavers to the white supremacist domestic terrorists who are still doing their dirty work.
The banjo may have originated in Africa, but it has become an "American" instrument, so IMO it is apropos for a song called "American Tune." And her playing is not intrusive.
A most special tribute to the most deserving star . A man apart from others by his enormous talent. Thank you Rhiannon. Thank you Paul Simon.

HIstory recalls the first hearing all those years ago and NOW so appropriate again! Prescient composer angelic singer voice We need them NOW.

Wonderful to see both Ms. Giddens (so glamourous in her gown!) and Mr. Simon (holding his own, as we all age...)
I love Rhiannon Giddens. She's multi-talented and such a down-to-earth person as well. Blessings to Paul Simon!
I've loved her music for a long time and adored him all my life so this is quite something to see them together.
True, this is such a gift!
I didn’t know Rhiannon at all. Came to my feed as I’m a big Paul Simon fan. What a treat? She’s a blessing on one of PS’s wonderful examples of Americana poetry.
Humble Legend, always taking a backseat while others stand in the light of his making .
A wonderful tribute to Paul. ❤

I'm here for Rhiannon Giddens!
Wow, extraordinary, the humble talent displayed.
So beautiful!

Taking my breath away.
Talent on top of talent.
Paul, you are the G. O. A. T.
She is just soooooo good.
Love her work. What a voice.
Just heard Rhiannon sing this at Union Chapel tonight. Stunning.
I got into music because of Paul Simon. Learned to play his way. Thank you!
I've loved her since the Carolina Chocolate Drops...amazing career all over the world.
Thanks for sharing this. Even off a tv it carries the weight of both their creative souls.
Just beautiful; lyrics and singing
Thank you for taking the time to post this. I've heard this song countless times and never once stopped to contemplate the profound lyrics until now. Thanks to Rhiannon Giddens for bringing it home to me.
Same here Tracersport. Makes me wonder how many songs I have listened to over the years and not grasped the lyrics. I am trying to play catch-up now.
Gorgeous ❤️. Her voice and Paul’s talent- extraordinary
Love this.
The music for American Tune goes back to the great hymn- O Sacred Head Now Wounded- 16th Century- talk about timeless. It is my favorite Simon song!
Oh wow. Yes! Great hymn.
Wow. Both gifts to humanity.

Soooo Goood for this weary man. Thn
Extraordinary
Every time I hear her sing I hear something new. This time as I listened it occurred to me what a beautiful duet she could have done with Gordon
Lightfoot. Guess you can't have it all.
absolutely amazing
Both are awesome....
Bravo!
Marvelous voice and great tune that was inspired on Passione secondo Matteo by j.s.bach
Yes, Paul borrowed a bit from Bach. ua-cam.com/video/MY-aowxVXfI/v-deo.html

I apologize for the brief background noise. Next time I will just record it again. Still a novice at this.
I'd love to hear a high quality version. Thank you. Audacity is a good free audio editing program.
She just won a Pulitzer Prize for her opera!
Great.
Hoping to hear them sing together again
Spanish Mary from Dylan's basement tapes is the Best! What a beautiful voice.
She's also a wonderful fiddle player.
She is also a great banjoist!
Great song, great singer. The title of the song has not been mentioned: American Tune.
AND SING AN AMERICAN TUNE GRAND BELEZZA .28 from earon earthjust like you nyc
genius
whoa
Beautiful song and performance. What is the title of the song?
It is called American Tune"
It’s called “American tune”
Comments can now be added.
what an interesting take on that song...

Dang!
Lyrics ever so slightly altered to accommodate for colored American singer. Makes it an even more powerful song.

@@twittertwice What should i have said instead to emphasize the reason for slightly altering the lyrics?
Glad you noticed! Very Perceptive.

This can't be from 2023. They played this song at 2022 Newport Folk festival,so Pauls claim that he just met Rhiannon is a lie!
Post is dated Jan 1 2023. The event was in Spring 2022, televised in Dec 2022. Unless you were only joking.
I bet you're a hoot down the pub.
@@paultaylor1519 Yes, it was broadcast Dec 21 2022.
@@strickdan44 True. Then why did Paul say he just met Rhiannon? They performed this song earlier at Newport. Misleading the audience.
@@c.s.mcleod7383 seriously? get a life. nobody cares
Beautiful 😍 bless you both 🙏
Never heard of her. She'll never be where Paul Simon is today.
You madam are an 1d1ot. Look up Carolina Chocolate Drops and be educated.
Apples and Oranges, like most musical comparisons.
As if we care about that comment ???, they both amazing , seriously. both incredible., both .
This song needs a banjo in the way the Moonlight Sonata needs a kazoo.

Such talent.
