- The vehicle featured in this video is a Fiat 500 which was reported to have an intermittent fault with the tailgate lamps, which do not work consistently.
This is a common fault on this model and is usually due to the wiring harness between the body and tailgate becoming ‘brittle’ with age. This, combined with the frequent opening and closing of the tailgate, contributes to stressing and straining the wiring. Eventually, the insulation cracks - leaving the wiring exposed, which results in short or open circuits.
This fault can also cause any other electrical component located within the tailgate to suffer with intermittent issues such as the rear wiper not working, tailgate not showing as ‘closed’, or false alarm triggering.
febi wiring harness repair kit 107102 was chosen for the repair process. This kit comes supplied with a new rubber gaiter, connectors and silicon-insulated wire. The silicone insulation is more resistant against thermal stress and stays flexible at any temperature, which helps to prevent cable breaks in the future. Additionally, the wires are tinned and are extra fine, making them more flexible and preventing corrosion for a reliable repair.

Do you have to disconnect the engine? I'm worried about it resetting the car if I do so. Would it be possible to just turn off the car normally to do the repair?
It is important to disconnect the battery when working on live electrical systems. After reconnection, the only reset that should be required is for the convertible roof. The procedure is as follows:
Start the engine. Press and hold convertible roof open switch to fully open. Continue to hold switch for at least two seconds. Press and hold convertible roof close switch to fully close. Continue to hold switch for at least two seconds. Convertible opens roof fully, then immediately closes fully. Switch ignition OFF.
My girlfriend's Fiat occasionally experiences the issue of the rear hatch not opening, both through the lock itself and with the remote control. Remarkably, the lights and rear window heating function normally even when the rear hatch doesn't open. However, I can manually press the lock on the rear hatch from the back seat, and then the rear hatch opens.
I am considering replacing the wiring harness, but I am not sure if this will solve the problem. Do you have any advice or suggestions on how to remedy this issue?

Checking the wiring harness for damage is easy, just peel back the rubber boot and visually check if the insulation has cracked, leading to short or open circuits. If this is ok, it could be the position sensor in the latch or a fault with the release.
How do you know which wire colours on the replacement and the main car match?
Unfortunately, Fiat changed the wiring harness colours during the production of the car. The only way is to cut one wire at a time and make the join. Then an accurate repair can be made.

How did you join large wires to smaller one supplied
