One time, one of our destroyers got attacked in the Gulf of Tonkin. There was no damage and no injuries, but we went to war anyway and killed over a million people and had over fifty thousand of our own killed. A lot of the nation's treasure got transferred into the hands of defense contractors. We finally gave up and left, leaving a bunch of weapons and some prisoners of war behind. It eventually came out that the reason our ship was attacked was that it was within the territorial waters of the other nation, providing communications support to commando operations that were being conducted against that nation. It is quite possible that other countries in the world with knowledge of our history might take a dim view of our warships prowling around near their coasts.

The Gulf of Tonkin attacks on USS Turner Joy and USS Maddox never happened-- it was a false flag, as confirmed by later statements by men involved, up to and including a future CNO (Chief of Naval Operations, top officer in the Navy).
A few months later, a US ship, AGTR-5, USS Liberty, was attacked in 3 waves, by aircraft and torpedo boats, and actually sunk in action. The life rafts were then straffed by the aircraft and torpedo boats that sunk it. F-4s from the nearby CSG were ordered to RTB after scrambling onto a supersonic intercept course upon hearing the USS Liberty's mayday call. The USS Liberty's Captain was given the Medal of Honor and placed under orders to never speak about the incident, to anyone, ever. 68 US Sailors were killed.
So why did LBJ lie to the public about Tonkin, then lie to them about an actual sinking only a few months later?
It all makes a lot more sense when you see which country sank USS Liberty, and tried to murder as many of her crew as possible...

USS Liberty was burning the candle at both ends, since we were sharing electronic intel she gathered with not just the Israelis but also the Egyptians. Kind of stage managing the affair to keep it from spiralling out of control. Seems the Israelis didn't go for this, hence their 'accidental' attack on our ship.
Because this incident was in 1967, so a lot has changed.
Also, the ship was mistaken for an Egyptian spy ship because the ship had no country flag flying over it. While it is not required to do so, it is a common practice to do so out of politeness. Let’s also remember that this incident occurred during the six day war, a war in which Israel had more enemies in this war than it did allies.

As many many people have already said, where the warship was, is a vital trade route for many countries across the world. The reason the warship was there, was to protect commercial vessels from pirates.
Well, that'd be nice, but Iran and countries like them won't leave oil tankers, shipping vessels, or grain ships alone. If Iran could send naval ships as far as international waters off the cost of the US, they'd be monitored but not attacked.
