Just subscribed ❤ Simon, I need a leader like you. I am 60 and came close to having a leader like you about 3 years ago with a new position I had acquired after the company I was with for 13 years shutdown, but this woman was the best mentor and I only was able to work with her for a short period of time as she was retiring. Good leadership is scarce. I am in search of new of new job after being let go... Hoping that the universe brings me a true leader for my 3rd chapter of employment.

Currently having to deal with C-level people that don't understand this principle. When I was hired a year ago I was promised that I could work from home, saving me from driving 50+ miles a day round trip. The plan was to start the 1st of January. Unfortunately fate had other plans and my car was totaled Christmas day '22. Believing I could wfh I wasn't stressed. Then they said I had to find a way to work or lose my job. Never mind my job as a Software QA Engineer can be and is done by 90% of the company remotely. I am one of the few unfortunate people that lives in the same state as HQ. Anyway the new policy up to now has been a minimum in office presence of Tues-Thurs, 10am-2pm. The new policy starting next month is M-Th 9am-3pm with the intent to be M-F, 8am-5pm. Simple perspective, it take 30 minutes to drive to work leaving at 9am to be there at 10am. In order to make meetings at 8am I have to leave at 7am and as long as there are no issues the drive from Downtown Gilbert to the Scottsdale airpark area takes 50 minutes.
Also to note, driving for work or during work hours has never bothered me. I drove school buses, taxis and Lyft while getting two bachelors, keeping a 3.5+ gpa. Driving is not the issue. Wasting nearly two hours of my time a day to drive to and from work when the actual job can and is done remotely by a majority of the engineers is what makes my blood boil. Further more, with my education I am not only able to do the software side of things but the hardware as well. Ironically my internet/network setup is faster and more secure than what we have at work. However, what it comes down to is I need the income, though it is lower pay than it should be. Without an income I'll end up homeless again. Which is a story for another time but in short, I was homeless off and on last year before starting this current career path.

So so true! While we all agree, how can we shift to that leadership style and behaviour?

No one respects management that only does talking. Ppl don't listen to them coz they fail to set a good example as a role model. No one can go against (at least in their presence - they can talk down/spread rumours, etc behind their back) those who constantly and robustly prove themselves to be adequate and competent through their actions as well as talking. Management's job is not just telling employees what to do, etc. They have to prove to themselves that they're competitive against other leaders. Lots of the time they act like children who need babysitting at work. Act like grown-ups. Take responsibilities. Don't be defensive. Accept your own failure and show your ppl that you can overcome anything by doing it yourself. We all are so sick of 'Talkers'. Show it and Prove it.
