Rough Water! Sailing Offshore Bahamas to Panama

- Опубліковано 24 лип 2024
- Paul outlines his passage plan and we set sail from the Bahamas to do a 7-day offshore voyage to Panama passing Cuba en route. Once through the Windward Passage between Cuba and Haiti, we face strong winds and a fierce head current which results in large steep seas. Sheryl struggles as she recovers from a sprained ankle but the crew pitch in. We make a night landfall in Panama facing one of the highest concentrations of shipping in the world as we come into port. Bonus feature: Flags of Convenience Explained by Oceanskies.

Sheryl and Paul
fantastic start to the series! Can't wait to finish the rest.

Nice cruise, thanks ... looking forward to the next leg!
I did enjoy it; I will give it a thumbs up.
I always loved watching your tv series and still do, but these newer videos are on a different level. The sights, sounds and locations are incredible. Thank you!!
Thanks +Sean its great to have you aboard! Glad you like the sounds too. Audio is a big part of the job editing these shows!
Nice job guy's! Fair winds!!
You two are very descriptive in your passage planning, making viewing much more enjoyable.
What a great episode with the addition of a great crew. As ever, very informative and enjoyable. Here's to the next one:-)
Thanks Simon glad you enjoyed!! The next ones in Panama will be great - it was a fun ride both exploring the jungle and in the Canal!
Distant shores is one of the best sailing youtube channels! I enjoy and watch everyone. The information is great! Thank you!!!
Thanks very much Carl! We're glad you like the info too! P&S
sitting down watching the rough water! catching up my breath and Captain Paul is like that's ok ..💪👍🏻cheers.
Love your fine art of keeping yacht lingo understandable for land lubbers!
Wow! Really cool. Looks like a fun crew to make the passage with. Very helpful. Thanks.
Great episode!
Great channel. Always informative and well stated.
Great video folks. Excellent editing! Enjoyed it.
Hey Gareth!! Glad you liked it! It was a challenging passage to film and fun to edit!
You guys are awesome! 💚💙💚💙 hope your ankle gets better soon Sailor girl 💪💪✅✊
Beautiful movie. Looking forward for the next. Fair winds.
Thanks Spartivento! Us too!
Thanks for such a great Narration of your passage.
Awesome video as always
We really liked this video as it shows passages aren't always awesome (as in easy). It also sounds like you had a great crew for this rather roley passage. Great idea sharing the registration segment! Tomorrow, finally, our sailboat goes into the water 🤗
Glad you enjoyed it! Good luck with your launch Cedric!
Good sailing and good eating!!!! Nice combination. Thanks
I think I'll sail with you for awhile. You add content I've not heard before. Excellent video!
you guys are the BEST!
First time viewer here, truly enjoyable video and the food!!! Thanks

Thank you for video. You are very professjonal and I love watching your channel.I can't wait next episode.
Great video and a great crew. Hats off to Keith for making good food in spite of the weather. Looking forward to your future adventures. Fair winds
Absolutely! Keith was a trooper. In fact all the crew loved to cook and didn't get seasick.
The scenery is so beautiful and stunning.Very enjoyable! Reminds me of my trips where I take the good music like the Guns N Roses, Imagine Draongs or the Delta Parole and then enjoy the powerful feeling of the sea. ¡vamos!
Spectacular filming of the Bahamian waters and night sky-looked like daytime, so blue! Very entertaining and informative too
Night sky videography was another level altogether. They are professionals at this and it shows
Exactly how you planned it, nice work.
Excellent video!
Great journey with good cook's. I made that trip on a Valiant 42 couple years ago. Was a rough ride on a great sailboat. Fair winds.
man!! everything about your videos screams QUALITY. very well made content.
great episode
Nice to see a professional sailing channel, in contrast to others.
This is epic
amazing content!
Did that passage 2 years ago from St Martin and it was rolly as hell too. But what a happiness once you get there
Looks like you chose your crew well based on the food alone, and they appear to be calm and confident. That was some tall seas! Great episode.
Agreed! They were all great!!!
Vraiment bien!!! i watched many different sailing channel on yt but i have to admit this Distant Shores have the best quality contents!!! Bravo...
Thanks Nouvelles! Glad you like our episodes!
thanks for this video, I learn to much
Our pleasure Juan Jose!
Fantastic trip guys! I sailed on a Leopard 45 from Key West to Panama in January. The arrival in Shelter Bay is such a relief! Transiting the canal is the experience of a lifetime! Enjoyed your video! Looking forward to more as this Corona Virus allows!
That's wonderful. Was the catamaran less Rolly? what do you think about the rolling of the mono hulll versus the cat in the same sea conditions in the video?
Great vid guys really well narrated and a lovely crew and boat so jelous hehe
Thanks so much, Peter!
Great video !!
Awesome effort guys👍👍👍👍👍👍
Thank you so much 😀
Since watching your videos my wife and I are already looking to purchase a boat and plan to sail the bahamas and scuba dive....as soon as the kids fly the nest....thank you very much
just starting the C D + S sailing school, can't wait to get my A
long term plan is to sell everything and start sailing around the world
Just watched and subscribed. I also appreciated the extra bit at the end regarding registration. I am currently on a Japanese Registered Boat in Tokyo preparing for a solo crossing to Vancouver in 2022 and may have to change my registration due to issues taking a JP registered boat off shore. So I was considering changing to a Canadian Registration but you have introduced a new option. Thank again
Its always the best, cream of the cream........... Professionalism all the way........ So calm crew.... in breezy settings..... groggy with a smile on.......
Thank you for your video
You’re welcome Munir❤️
Nice video, bet you enjoyed the "Goose Winging" sometimes it really gets the adrenaline going. I wish you all 'Fair Winds & Safe Passage'...
excellent cinematography and love the night shots, few sailing channels seem to capture the night as well as you do. you just got a subscriber and a viewer for sure! love the Canadian accents too.
Awesome, thank you!
Thanks for posting.
Cheers, S/V Good Karma
GREAT!!!
Keep safe from Van Isle Canada eh. Love your channel
nice info ,
Glad it was helpful!
Wow the big guy looks like s Winston Churchill , or???, he tasted his prepared food for sure..................., lol., this sailing is awesome but not for all of us but great to watch on land........, thanks for making and uploading, highfive from The Netherlands.
Awesome job. I would love to see a 10 minute natural sound video from this crossing...
Thanks for the idea Derrick! We will be shooting more with the extra microphones that can record in the strong windy conditions. Sound is a tricky part of sailing videos.
Moonlight sand so beautiful i’ve never seen anything like that please make an ambience video of just that beautiful night
interesting hearing your observations about the Wx crossing. Just a merchant marine guy looking to get that sailboat gig started :) fyi, if you are unsure about a vessel's intentions- AIS/ECDIS has your answers before you have to pick up VHF
Had a knockdown on this exact same passage at 5am... it's a pretty serious trip.
Keith is the man!
Very beautiful 👍 👍
Where is that quiet anchorage in the Bahamas..? it looks amazing, like DSIII is just floating on glass!
Interesting on the Flags.
Yes, Jersey and other tax havens help wealthy people to avoid taxes, that they could safely afford at the expense of the population in their home countries
Dream on
Awesome stuff. If you don't mind me asking, what lens are you using for your low light footage?
Hey, it looks like the paperweight you made in Venice some years ago.
I'm curious as to what kind of camera you used to shoot the low light footage? It's great!
I saw another youtuber in the background as you pulled into George Town, 2:24
Your one of the few that does offshore passages without windvane steering. Is the autopilot upto the job in rough conditions like this?
I'm sure you have considered adding a windvane. Why did you decide against one?
Its beautiful but I can't ride on a boat I get dizzy lol I can't even watch this with all the waves lol have to look away some be careful 😱🙏
Hello I think we call the islands 🏝 CUBA 🇨🇺, ESPAN-OLA, TORTUGAS . NICE VIDEO 📹 👍 THANKS. SALUDOS
Paul, how do you get the sailboat symbol move as per the timeline on PredictWind portion (at the beginning of the video)? And, by the way, wonderful video. Love it.
Glad you enjoyed it ElCid😅 I animated the sailboat myself on top of the PredictWind forecast animation. We stop at nothing to bring you the best vids😅😂 actually I like this stuff
In the very beginning you passed Honu! @jessicaandryanadventures!
What a pity you never showed us even a glance of Georgetown. I'm really disappointed we never got to see any of that.
Wait...you guys have a toaster on board??? Ok, now you're just Yves Sail Laurenting on DS III. Fair winds and hope you can get back to her soon. Cheers.
Hey Darcy! Yupp the toaster has survived although I thought it might have packed up by now!
Do you always tip marina hands?
Sheryl & Paul, enjoyed your video very much.We did this trip going the other way Bocas to Bahamas. Good passage planning made it a good trip. You were lucky to have such capable crew. Paul your night shots were great. Can I ask what camera you used? Enjoy all your videos so thank you.
He answered in another comment that it's a Sony a7s II I believe it was. Said he had a really fast lens. It's the third comment from the top
@@CessnaPilot99 Thank you so much for letting me know. I'd missed that comment.
Keith's a keeper.
He is! The whole crew were amazing!
bill hanna I don’t normally read the remarks on UA-cam but then I’m not normally in the videos. Im a little embarrassed.
@@keithwalker8990 Im a delivery shipper & could see you fitted in very well , Enjoy the stardom .
wow, Orion's belt at 0:30. It's so bright .
Is the night always so bright or is the filmed with a super duper camera?
Your eyes will see it like that at sea. But most cameras can’t record it😅 we have a very fast lens that can👌
How long does it take to learn enough Seacraft to make your first coastal sailings.
Just curious?? and jealous.
I don’t even have a boat but I want to buy boat insurance all of a sudden.
LMAO same here
Ya, they chose a good public representative that's for sure.
Very nice video. I was just gifted a 1981 TMI 30. I'm learning everything I can from UA-cam.
What brand/ model is the red LED head lamp @17:26?
We're off the boat at the moment and I can't remember the brand off the top of my head but we bought it in the UK.
Non-sailor here. How far do you have to stay from other countries when you pass them. When you passed Cuba, for example, you seemed fairly close. Just curious.
The best day for someone that has a boat is the that he seal it
I would like to have seen more details of how you came into the panama marina, in the dark and with all that traffic. Wasn’t that nerve racking? Why not wait outside for daylight?
Thanks for your comment, Peter. We did our best to film this which was challenging in the dark while minding the ship at the same time and showed how we used AIS to track ship movement which we have a lot of experience with. Due to the weather forecast we felt it was safer to get in rather that night rather than keep the crew out for another night amidst a lot of moving traffic. We got the okay from port control and the channels are well marked and lit into the canal and Shelter Bay Marina. Hope this answers your question.
Interesting, Why Jersey instead of BVI or any of the other Red Ensign states? I've been planning on either BVI or Marshall Islands once I've got my boat.
Since we were cruising Europe and have ties to the Channel Islands, Jersey seemed to be the best option for us as advised by Oceanskies.com.
@@DistantShoresTV That looks like a handy link, thanks!
Oceanskies : What happen for EU at the Brexit ? Same deal ?
Dayum yall are eating good. Im my boat its more like camping food.
