The expansion for "China Town" has been in my head for years, which made the compositional part quite easy. It was the balancing and perfecting processes that took up a large bulk of the time. I wanted it to feel both electronically dreamy, and traditionally Asian-inspired, with several instruments committed to that goal. You, listener, will decide if I succeeded or not. This is, to date, my most ambitious expansion, and a deeply personal one for me. It's also the one many of you were waiting for with such anticipation, which is why I went an extra few miles to make sure it sounded its best.
@@Iceferno - Dude you know your praise is always highly appreciated. Thanks a bunch. I'm hitting your past few releases tomorrow too. Been too sidetracked to keep up with things! 👍
@@MaestroDraven No problem. :) Also, side-thought, China Town has quite similar chord progression to My Lover. Something I just noticed while listening.
Two masters just chatting at the comments section. 😂 Maestro, this is just awesome! I like how "China Town" seems to hit a chord with many people, it's a great composition. And as this remix shows, it can go even higher.
I third it. It’s by far the most memorable track from the game. And it’s a game filled with memorable tracks. I find myself humming it at work all the time. It’s a relatively simple composition but it’s my idea of the perfect Genesis track. It really plays to the strengths of the Yamaha FM synthesizer. The bass line carries a ton of the musical weight in addition to normal timing duties. Which is the right way to compose a Genesis song since the Yamaha synth was at its best with bass tones.

TROS soundtrack is the first video game OST that proved video game music that could be more than just simple repeating melodies but could be ambitious in spite of the limited hardware. It’s a technical achievement and It’s a testament Yuzo Koshiro’s talent.
You nailed the expansion. Thank you so much for not only keeping our childhood alive but add spice to it! It feels like revisiting an old place and discover a treasure.
It reminded me of my childhood obsession with this music, so I decided to use the so many emotions. I'm going to listen to it a lot, thank you so much. The quality is so good, I'm really, really impressed.
Always thought this soundtrack sounded like the end credit theme for an 80s ninja-noir movie we never got, now it goes even deeper into such territory, it feels like the trailer, intro and end credit soundtrack too.
This is one of the tracks for which I actually bought and played the game in 2006, I believe this was by far the most difficult and logical games I ever experienced till today. Gekidou, Super Mario etc were all crap in front of this 8-bit wonder. I always thought that the designers and logics was magical, and this particular OST is just groundbreaking, even in Naruto I haven't heard such an emotional track. Hinata's OST is most syncd with this dont you guys feel it too? The reason why I actually watched naruto was because of this game and the hint of this music in Hinata's ost. A particular japanese touch, hint of excellence, culture and a thought that guides a guy to take on the world with technique being a single man force against the world, a purpose driving a warrior to eradicate the enemy, even if it is a clan. Reminds me of Genghis khan, a man building an empire alone.
I've been waiting for you to drop this mix and by god you haven't disappointed! China Town is by far my favourite track from Shinobi hands down. If they ever decide to remaster or remake this game, I hope they get you on board for the soundtrack. 10/10 my friend, amazing job ^_^
Since I was a kid I always loved this track from the game. Still today when I get to this stage I am hyped just for it. One of my gaming references for traditional Asian kind of songs. This also brings me feels of story telling and the sorrowness and struggles Shinobi is going through.
Same here. When I was a kid, I couldn't beat the second stage. The first time I reached Chinatown, I spent some minutes just listening to the music. Haha
Even though I haven't played "THE REVENGE OF SHINOBI" and haven't even heard the original music, but your "Expanded & Enhanced" version got me completely! When your Expansion started, it was like I heard a nice story at the Kabuki Theater. You got into the rhythm so much that it takes your breath away! I never thought that Traditional Japanese Music would sound so cool in 16-bit!
Yuzo Koshiro has on his channel an alternate version of China Town from his OSTs, which uses the drums and bass that's more aligned with the X68K computer's Yamaha sound chip as he intended than the Genesis' other Yamaha sound chip.
I cant believe how awesome this is! The views to comments ratio must tell you how many people liked this enough to comment. Ill be playing these in the background to study. Please keep up the good work, I want to hear more classics!
I would like Shinobi Remake. And hear this music like this. I call that modern retro. And a real Shinobi Movie and Anime. That clip at the beginning with the cool music where his master dies. It can become the opening Theme.
Think I'm starting to have more nostalgic feelings from listening to his and Iceferno's remixes than of playing the games as a kid! Sterling sounds, also more than once has been a ringtone or motivating alarm 😊
I am in love with your extended and improved versions of this classic ost. another fav of mine is Desert Strike, id love to hear what you could do with that gem.

Note: Sorry if there is a weird translation into English.
Chinatown is one of my favorite tracks in this game, so to hear you finally take this on was a dream come true To say this expansion was ambitious is an understatement! I love how you started off with your standard enhancement technique, which was ASTOUNDING! It got me dancing to the song even more than i usually do - it felt so natural~ The section at 3:00 really leaned into the traditional Chinese aesthetic of the song, and I absolutely loved it! I dont know what these instruments are called, but I just love the instrumentation here 4:23 Now this was very unconventional - stopping the song and then slowly fading into a new section - that was incredibly well-executed. It almost feels like a different song, but still close enough to be clearly tied to Chinatown, almost like a movement in a symphony; when the original motif returns at 5:23 it feels like a natural switch that makes you realize... "Oh, this IS Chinatown... and it fits so, so well!" This really spoke volumes about your skill as a musician 6:28 Traditional Chinese vibes are returning, yes! When we finally returned to the original track, it was so fulfilling! It felt like we had completed a journey, and the re-entry point was incredibly smooth, and you just knew that it belonged. Everything was in just the right place for this track I'm not sure if you'd consider this your magnum opus, but I'd at least say that if you wanted to do this song justice, you've passed with flying colors
Hey Dr Volk, thanks! The instruments are a Nagoya Harp, Shakuhachi and a Laotian Zither. I had this idea for the original opening theme of ROS and wanted to carry it over to China Town as well to create a sense of authenticity. At the same time, I didn't want to go too overboard with it. And since it was designed to be a much longer song than others, I added the bridge section in to peak/valley it for some added atmosphere.
I initially came across your channel yesterday after listening to your rendition of The Last Soul from Streets of Rage 1. I really hope you complete this OST like you did those games as your remixes are amazing! Yuzo Koshiro's music has always been amazing, but thanks to you, they now feel like complete songs.
That was a masterpiece! I don't know what I was expecting but this was better! You captured a feeling that is both moving and somber. Excited to see what you think of next! You nailed this one. I know it was your baby haha PS I'm curious to see what you do with the Labyrinth level, the music for that one was always tense, but repetitive and boring, much like the level itself.
