- 1990 Bottom Line performance. There is another posting of this at UA-cam, but the sound quality was even worse than this one! So, I thought it might be good to throw this one up too. Tuning: D2A2D3G3C4C4.
He was one with the guitar, body, mind and spirit. He only wanted to please his listeners. He went on tour in Japan. A Japanese guitar company made a double neck guitar, customized just for him. They presented it as a gift to him. I watched him play it at Shiver hall, Johns Hopkins Univerisity. It was fantastic!!!
My god, his dynamic control is just awe inspiring. Even at that pace, and with such difficult material he's completely in control of his instrument.
I miss this man SO MUCH. What a gift to have witnessed him live a few times. Still gives me shivers every time.
there's this really strange moment when you're a player....everything just goes right....all you can do is smile because you're surfing. Nothing smug or fancypants about it....the whole thing just makes sense. It's an incredible joy
I know exactly what you mean.
It's like when MJ is in the zone. Unstoppable
In the flow…I’ve had it playing soccer and being witty with girls.
A true Genius. Very likely the best acoustic guitar player to ever grace this planet.
You can feel God in this... and see it in the way he becomes almost possessed by the music.
Got to meet Michael in Kalamazoo Mi. As he came out into the audience and had my youngest Brother with me. Got his Autograph and chatted with him a little bit. Pleasant memory because both Michael and my Brother are gone now. I used to go to his shows and really miss what used to be a ritual dance for me yearly.
Your Music echoes trough time Michael.
Rest in peace...
No words. Just magical and out of this world
yes!
I've finally started checking out this guy's work, and he's a fantastic musician. With how prevalent rhythmic acoustic guitar playing is now, it's a little sad, considering when he passed away, he probably had no idea how much of an impact he made on the scene. Watching these old live performances reminds me of how sweet and short life can be.
Absolutely raw, intense spiritual and emotional energy translated with perfect execution= ritual dance
Amazing guitarist. Techically genious and spiritually in harmony. Deserved more attention.
The movie August Rush brought me here back in 2010... hahahahahaha I've been a fan since than Awesome guitarist
This is the sound of the spirit world singing.
Watching him play, you get the feeling he's having enough fun for everyone. The audience getting to experience it is just a bonus.
I guess I've been living in a cave, because I never heard of this guy before last night. What he's doing with his guitar I've never
seen done before. Amazing, it's as if he and his instrument are one and the same
Have you caught his documentary that is here on UA-cam? Couldn't recommend it enough
@@1NcognitoXx thanks, I'll check it out
@@spactick Awesome, look for the 1hr video "full artist profile" or something. Quality isn't great but its a gem
Checkout Kaki King and Keller Williams. They both picked up his technique and ran with it.
@@JasonGlisson thanks, will do
Michael Hedges was a force of nature.
Possibly the gentlest most kind man who ever lived
first time I've ever seen or heard of mr. hedges. sufficed to say, I will be spending the next 3 hours watching everything i can find of this guy.....wow! How is it I have never heard of him before?
1990 and 20 years later no one even comes close to Hedges! Definitely a one-of-king guitar Master.
He is the king but there’s about a hundreds dudes on candyrat alone who come close lol
kaki king le gana de hecho XD
Probably one of the best guitarists in the World, ever!!
Love him, saw him in a small venue, i meant him after, great man! God bless him
He is my hero. I love his music more than any other. RIP Micheal
he brings an amazing energy to people when he plays. he is a great man and a great guitarist. i wish he was still alive so i could see him in concert
without doubt he is a modern day Mozart.. left us all too soon .
The new acoustic guitar movement was clearly his invention.John Fahey,Windham Hill Records/Will Ackerman,Leo Kottke and Hedges were the cornerstones.I just hope that all these guys who ripping off his riffs everyday have that in mind and thank him.R.I.P. Michael.
PURE JOY
this is the song that changed my perspective in guitar playing and introduced me to tap guitaring...this guy is a legend no doubt. If only i couldve met him...
I feel bad for anyone who was inspired to get a guitar after seeing Michael play only to get home and realize their guitar doesn't do any of this 🤣. This is just such a radical and evolved perspective. He came to the guitar w child-like wonder and it opened itself up to him in such a profound way. Thank you for sharing buddy
I've been influenced by a lot of musicians but this guy is maybe the the most important.
Literally the best acoustic guitarist in the world! I felt God’s presence by listening to this masterpiece! RIP Michael. You will be missed. This is the best song I have heard! 1:32 best part 0.5
Literally? Subjective
Great Job
I know exactly what you mean man!
Michael. I’m so sorry I missed you in Tallahassee. You are my hero. Thank you for being you!
Anyone out there who remembers the great radio station out of W. MA WRSI back in the 80's, maybe until latest early 90's when the station was sold, I would hear Michael Hedges....that was the kind of radio station it was. Lost track of Michael for years on end, then came to realize that he had been killed years earlier in a car accident. I was floored. I loved his style. Wish I could see more vids of him and Leo Kotke playing together....have only seen 1 so far and it wasn't really a performance, it was off in the sidelines where they were just jamming together...it's somewhere here on Y/Tube.
thank you Michael for what you gave to the world
a song which makes me want to listen it again and again. Simply fantastic :))
perfectly balanced. not even a word is needed to be added to this melody.
Michael Hedges was the most talented guitar player ever!! This is my favorite piece...glad to see it on video. Thanks!
Am I the only one head banging along with him lol Love you M. Hedges!! RIP we need you more than ever! Dave us from this shit that's being called music today!!
I was 1 year old when this happened... yet it feels like it is happening now. this is energy
First discovered this when I was about 16 and was absolutely blown away. No other artist has ever done the same.
Hedges was amazing.
this is soooo true. it's so hard to describe. i agree with you, 100%.
no, I think it's not only technically good, this music is very amazing and whenever I listen it, it has always something new for me to show. Just close your eyes and let the music fill your body. And you'll understand what I am talking about :)
Same cause of death as my son Michael.. He was 23... can’t believe I randomly stumbled upon this ☮️💟
Phew! Downright brilliant. Why did he have to leave us too soon?
The best always do. So much love for his music. Grateful he shared it with us. Brilliant is the word, for sure!
great song i listen to it everyday and it never gets boring
Your friends are back Michael. Oh how I wish you were here to see it.
Outstanding! Thank you for posting this.
brilliant just brilliant
Music is magic. And being a musician is the most powerful and mysterious calling one can have (IMHO). This is awesome.
Criminally underviewed.
i saw him twice. once @ a concert and then 3yrs later walking around the peabody conservatory in baltimore. i said "did anyone ever tell you you look a LOT like michael hedges?" he said "yeah, i get that all the time." really nice guy. helluva way to go.
In fact, that's what I thought at first, but knowing Hedges's other pieces, I listened to this repeatedly, and it bears listening to over and over again; there is actually a lot of music in there.
Michael Hedges is underrated if anything. All these guys you see today - Andy Mckee, Preston Reed, Erik Mongrain, John Butler - they all got their chops from watching Michael Hedges videos and scratching their heads. He literally invented this style of playing.
And let's not forget how unique his compositions are and how interesting and dynamic a performer he was.
T.Emmanuel is a hoot and a brilliant *player*, but aside from his "Initiation" tune he's just a fun entertainer.
look at how happy he is!
simply amazing ..
Goosebumps everywhere..
This song is so good.
True talent there. I only know of him through my father, who listened to his music when I was a kid.
Wish I'd known more about him. When he died, I was barely 16 years old.
WHOLESOME AWESOMENESS!!!
Michael is my favorite acoustic player bar none...
Namaste
Kensho
Jaw dropping.
Man this guy gets so into what he does. It's Insane.
\m/ The man is sorely missed \m/
yes, I loved his tutorials. Will do some practice durning summer.
Michael doesn't need influence when he is a god, he just is something special.
This is so intense and beautifull...magical...
He's not "raping " the guitar. His body is overcome with the emotion as he channels it through his guitar. Its called passion. If you've never had such a connection with an instrument and the music your playing, then no one can describe it to you. Its the most exhilarating feeling.
Michael has been and will always be in our heart "the sense of music"..
Pacofdl
genuinely awesome tune!!!!!
Watched it again today. Great movie indeed.
Awesome Awesome Awesome .......gone too soon RIP
The master at work!
You can feel this open your soul
Pure love
As he said, he wasn't playing guitar, he was playing music.. I look at so many artists today who are trying too hard and force the music into reality, with Michael it seemed the music was forcing itself,, pouring out of his soul into reality
Shivers-n-Chills
Correct, and as many don't seem to understand, you can love them all.
simply DIVINE!
i have learnt this song and can play the notes, but i will never be able to do it quite like him. playing along with it is a surreal and wonderful moment
yeah thanks michael! u shall live forever!
Magic!!
This is my favorite song of his. When I was in college I wrote a song & interpretive dance to this… Here are the words (it’s a dialogue… I’ll mark the people 1- and 2 - )
1 - Won’t you come with me? Won’t you come with me? We can travel the world together & the mountains? Won’t you come with me? Won’t you come with me? We can travel the world together & the oceans?
2 - No I can’t go. No I can’t go… with you. No I can’t go. No I can’t go… with you.
1 - I Love You
2 - I Love You
1 - I Love You … Won’t you come with me? Won’t you come with me? We can travel the world together & the mountains? Won’t you come with me? Won’t you come with me? We can travel the world together & the oceans?
2 - No I can’t go. No I can’t go… with you. No I can’t go. No I can’t go… with you.
1 - I Love You
2 - I Love You

This just proves the best music is underground.
Michael is a hero and when I play in public , (which is not that often) I always cite Michael's influence on my playing. There are a few guitarists out there always worth mentioning. Andy McKee, Tommy Emmanuel, Presto Reed etc.
Michael did use a chorus as a compositional tool, its worth checking out his book (co authored with John Strope) in which he is very open about his pick ups, effects, techniques and settings.
The world has been a little darker since Michael died. RIP Michael.
Genius....
RIP Michael. Awesome
amazing!
chills!!!
Totally right.
AWESOME!
best song, best music, best guitar.
A true genius.
He was awsome
Epic! Amazing!
a pure genius who dies way ahead of his time.
Incredibly well put! Wish I spotted this comment 11 months ago.
he plays with fantastic emotion.
I was placed in a mental hospital and now all connection i have to the world i lived in before is my Beyond Boundaries cd by MH, my stereo and my 300 dollar acoustic guitar.
i flippin found this song by hedges years ago... and just watched august rush 2 nights ago...
i loved the movie... loved the song.. knew it sounded familiar.. but totally forgot i had this song in my fav.. LOL im such a dork..
BUT YAY.. the song is awesome by hedges, and covered by kaki..

Gone way too soon. Rest In Peace.
