I just did this mod on my s10 and it works great. Took my old filter cartridges cut them up took the floss and the media in it. Put it in a mesh baggie and put it in there as well so I didn’t lose my bacteria in the transfer.
I just purchased this filter for my 10 gallon and was trying to figure out a way to set it up for better function. Your video was a great help thank you!
Thank you for this! I have a 20 gal version and cartridges are expensive especially when used for the required duration. The way these sponges are positioned also makes it seem like they should work better than the cartridges
yep these filter sponges catch a lot of stuff just be careful when trimming back aquarium plants that it doesn't get stuck in the filter because plant trimming decay unless replanted
This filter pumps the water to the top of the filter box, the water won't filter thru the sponges, that is why the manufacturer has a gate like filter media.
Thank you very much! I had a turtle and have lot of fluval c3 sponge and Activated Carbon bags here? It's ok t use the activated carbon for betta fish? Thanks for this!
you're welcome ricardo! yes it should be fine, just remember that activated carbon packs need to be changed after a while because the carbon pellets gradually loose their absorbtion efficiency
Your awsome man :) ... thanks for the tips!! I was thinking doing something like that because I simply HATE!!!! Those sponge they include ... I was wondering how is the best setup too put the new sponge I order .. so now I able to complet my setup!! Thanks a lot !!!
The great thing about this filter model is that theres a knob that you can turn to adjust the power of the flow. This way you can make sure that the flow isn't too harsh for your betta.
I believe this filter is rated around 70 GPh so would be ok for a Betta. I wouldn't use it for a fully stocked (non Betta) 10 gal tank though. Rule of thumb is a GPH around 10x the size of your tank. In other words, for a 10 gallon tank not housing a Betta fish, I would use minimum 100 GPH.
Yes its ok! Activated carbon is useful but not essential. Having robust filtration, plants in the aquarium and doing water changes is more than enough.
@@DoAqua If I wanted to also use carbon, would that be okay instead of 2 filter media? If so, would you recommend putting in the the second or the third section?
You do not need carbon especially if you have live plants. Sponge, and a filter pad are all you really need. If you want to add ceramic rings or rocks or similar, add it to the third container but it's really not all that necessary. Plenty of bacteria resides in the substrate, rocks and other surfaces in the tank.
There isn't really a "limit" meaning you can put as much as you want. However you will not need a lot of media since the bioload is low in an aquarium with only 1 betta. A simple bag should be more than enough.
The main idea here is stop making the "corporate aqaria community" rich and do your fish right,. Awesome video to teach people not to be slaves to the pet store. Great video buddy!!
The aquarium kits (rimmed tank) that Marina sells all come with this filter. I would recommend looking more into their specs first to make sure that it work for your tanks, but it should. Other notable filters that could be interesting for you would be the AquaClear and the Tidal HOB, they all come in many different sizes.
@@DoAqua Thank you so much for the quick reply. I think I'll just grab one and see if it fits seeing as they are so cheap, can always keep it as a spare for another tank if it doesn't fit.
Sir , If the filter works well and it makes the water cristal clear than when the tank water should be changed.? after how many days? Is it o.k to change the water of tank after 3 months ? Hope you are getting me . I am from India and my English is not so good . 🙂🙂
Hello Jayesh, the frequence at which people change the water of the aquarium is mostly based on personal preference and waste output by the fish (more fish, more waste, more water changes needed). From experience, as well as experience from other fishkeepers that I am in contact with, I know that well established aquariums with lots of plants can last a long time without water changes, which could be the case of your aquarium. That said, I usually prefer to do a 30% water change once every week or 2 week. This is also the time where I do some light cleaning and maintenance of the aquarium decor.

That's not always necessary. It's dependent on how much surface area you have in your tank for beneficial bacteria to grow. Example, if you have a 60 gallon tank with a pre sponge filter, washing that pre sponge filter will have little to no effect compared to if you had a 10 gallon tank with way less surface area. Surface area can include everything in your tank from the glass, to the gravel to the ornaments, etc... Either way it should be good practice to wash in tank water, but not necessary.
This is amazing and has helped me rethink my filter.
Thank you, glad I could help!

I would like to add smaller ceramic rings, carbon and that sponge is good. Excellent vid.
You can put pretty much everything you want, that's the beauty of going DIY
You don't need the carbon.
From right to left:
1st compartment) Sponge,
2nd compartment) floss or a filter pad,
3rd compartment) ceramic rings..
Can you use this method for betta fish and goldfish?
Yes
Thank you! I’m going to do this!!
This filter pumps the water to the top of the filter box, the water won't filter thru the sponges, that is why the manufacturer has a gate like filter media.
That's one of my concerns with this filter. Did you ever figure out a way to get past this design problem?
@@Tallermage I used the box from an old Top Fin hob and rigged up the pump, works perfectly and i can use any media.
I agree, however I did find that this setup works, although most probably not in the most efficient way possible. Thanks for your output!

so after the 1st chamber, the water can bypass the 3rd? meaning from the 1st it can come out after going through the 2nd?
The 2nd and 3rd chamber are not separated, water flows through both of them and comes out evenly through the last sponge
Sir ,
One more question .
Is it o.k we don't use activated carbon ? Only using volcano rocks is sufficient to make the water clear ?
Yes its ok! Activated carbon is useful but not essential. Having robust filtration, plants in the aquarium and doing water changes is more than enough.

For how many hours in a day the filter shoud be run .
Is it necessary to do the filtration for 24X7 hours .?
I always leave it running 24hx7 in my installations
You can just limit the flow rate.
could have bought a smaller sponge instead of the 70 gal one
Oh for sure, I don't recommend buying the big box only for a small filter. I did because I was going to use it on other projects.
