Bonjour Lily, bonne chance. Voila: Perylene Violet, Indigo, Quinacridone Sienna; Cobalt, Phthalo Blue Turquoise from DANIEL SMITH
What a beautiful painting and thanks for sharing your skills. May I know why you paint the background first instead of painting the ballerina first? Is there a special reason for that order? It's so difficult to do the negative painting for the face when you can't see the face?
Hi Alice, thanks for the great question. In truth, you see the profile of the ballerina precisely because it is light, white, and behind it there is dark negative space. There is no other way to draw that profile other than making the dark background. If I started drawing this from the face or from the figure, I would not be able to keep the white line intact. So that is why I made it in reverse order. In truth, it is very easy, once you stop thinking about objects and start thinking about the light and the darkness. Thank you!
Thats so impressive. Just a Q: Do you always wet the back of your paper just before painting?
Thanks for your question. I always wet the backside of the paper if I plan to sketch my work for more than 20-25 minutes. It means that I will need time to make soft gradients and transitions. If we talk fast sketch - below 20 minutes - then I don't wet the backside. In all other cases, wet paper on the back gives you more time and simplifies everything. Thank you!
Hi Michael, what black tape do you use? What backing board do you paint on? Thank you!
Thanks Lara! Here is my black tape: www.watercoloronline.com/product-page/solo-tape
And here is my PVC board: www.watercoloronline.com/product-page/pvc-foam-watercolor-board
Why your all pigments/ paints always look so fresh ?
Daniel Smith pigments are cool like that, Sudhakar!
Oh and what size paper is this? Thanks.
It's 22 x 15 inches :)
Thank you :)
Hello, why are you using doble tape?, Is that some especial effect?
Hi Laura! This gives me a neat white margin around the perimeter exactly one inch wide. I like the way it looks and I use it when I frame my artwork.
For an artist of oil color for fifty three years and scare of water color like hell what advice you give to get rid of this fear
Great question.
1. Don't spare paper. Resign yourself to the fact that it will fly in batches into the trash. You trade paper for experience.
2. Think of watercolor like water and let it flow where it wants to. Just tweak it a little.
3. A glass of red wine before work.
Have you ever discarded your painting for being not upto the mark ?
Oh yes, of course! I am trying something new every time, often unsuccessfully :)
