You are such a wonderful baker- would you ever consider creating a baking/spice & seasoning capsule list? Thank you so much for everything you create- I love it all!

Love the concept of a capsule grocery list. Like anything else, it shows that simple is best and that delicious, wholesome meals can come from simple pantry staples. It would be fun to see a weeks worth of meals that you cook from this capsule. Thanks for sharing. Have a lovely day 😊.

I would probably add pasta and fresh lettuce... And maybe sour cream. I've never tried the health blend and my family doesn't like avocado so if I removed those two, I'd still have close to 20. I've never thought about groceries in regards to a capsule, but it's a GREAT idea! Thank you for another wonderful video.

My family uses fresh spinach in almost every recipe that needs lettuce, so I would definitely add spinach to the list

I've never thought of it like this but it's a great way of thinking of it. I find grocery shopping really overwhelming so this mindset could help. Especially if I separate 'weekly shops' from say a monthly big store cupboard top up one. For our family I'd add tofu, kale, apples and bell peppers.

A valuable video for many. Lessons learned about feeding a family, usually by those so much older than you. Basic groceries that have allowed people to prepare meals, easily. Over the years, especially when I had children at home, meals, especially meat, were based on sale items that week. A freezer, worth its weight in gold for so many reasons. I fill it with sale items, and as you've done, a time saver as well. You've done a service for many!

I just wanted to mention, I think it's recommended to use ground flax seeds instead of whole. The whole seed passes through virtually undigested so you lose out on nutritional benefits. You can soak or grind the others as well for easier absorption. I was just reading about it & wanted to share!🙂

I also put the seeds in oatmeal muffins...

We have a lot of similar likes! I don't use lemons much but one thing that I always have on hand is stock, mostly chicken and beef. It bumps up the flavor of meats, stews, beans, soups, and you can make it yourself or like me, have a few containers on hand at all times! Great video Hilary. Blessings, Arlene

Great advice! I do this and didn’t even realize it! Makes things so much easier. For a budget friendly tip I prepare my lentils in a large batch in a crockpot then divide and freeze, works with beans as well. I don’t even thaw sometimes just throw it in. Of course my 4 kids are a season or 2 ahead of yours(7-13) so I can squeeze in time for a little extra meal prep.

Great tips Hilary, especially about the canned tomatoes. I am 67 so this is how I have always cooked but not many younger people were taught this type of intuitive cooking style. My daughter and I were diagnosed with celiac disease back in the 90s and thank goodness I cooked in this style because it was fairly simple to switch out a few gluten ingredients for gluten free ones as they really didn't sell gluten free in groceries back then. My two main staples are something I pressure can, beans and chicken breasts. I can make a million things out of them!!

Hilary, your capsule grocery idea is practical on so many levels. I, too, have certain items that I keep stocked in my pantry and fridge at all times. Even though it is just the two of us now, I try to cook dishes that are simple and nourishing. Being younger seniors, we just don't eat as much as we did in our 20's and 30's and that's a good thing. I may add a new recipe once in a while, but for the most part I just rotate our favorite meals. My husband, bless his heart, has never been a picky eater, so I am very blessed in that way. Hugs and blessing to you and your sweet family!!💗

When I stayed at home with my kids, I also cooked from scratch every day. Today, however, I have six kids left at home, most of them teenagers and I work full time. I cook less and count on all sorts of things I didn’t use when I was at home. I love watching your channel, it brings back a lot of memories!

I always called myself the boring cook because I buy the same thing over and over but I fix it so many different ways like you mentioned. I boil 2-4 chicken breasts each week - we use it for our salads and lunch meat sandwiches. I will season it and brown it in the skillet to add more flavor.

I also have core items I re-order & use all the time. I've never heard it called a capsule list. I think people who cook a lot at home always have their go-to things... We don't eat animal products anymore. So I always keep things on hand like lots of nuts, fruits, veggies, beans, etc...

Absolutely agree. I have kept a well stocked pantry, fridge and freezer for years. I have meal planned for a month, just to refer to as a guide. Keeping multi use foods on hand means you can put together anything anytime, including visitors. I make the hemp, chia and flax seed hot "cereal" too. It's so good . I add a little brown sugar, a tiny bit of butter and milk and sometimes walnuts and dried cranberries. tfs 🥰💐🌷🌞🌛☔🏜💗✝

Mrs Dan Dare here. Hello, I feel I'm a bit late replying today but sadly a busy day got in the way of viewing you. I have to say I find you both an inspiration while at the same time being amazed how similar your approach to being a home maker is to mine. We are the other side of the Atlantic from one another yet I see so many echos of you in me (and vice versa). Your capsule shopping list is practically the same as mine. I buy all those ingredients for the same reason you do. Namely versatility. I think it is amazing how many different meals you can make from core ingredients. I would say feta cheese is also a capsule ingredient for me. Other similaries is the joy of thrifting, upcycling, reusing from what you have and not having an excess of stuff. I have adopted some of the more traditional elements you have in your home into mine such as floral curtains, cosy rugs and a cohesive but not matchy matchy look. Thank you for your videos. Twice a week I feel you're a welcome visitor into my home. Just a pity I can't reciprocate

So the recipe she describes, actually follows a Keto principle of No Grains... so the Flax, Chia, Hemp are actually Seeds... the reasoning behind this is Grains are Carbs... seeds are not... so if one is diabetic, or wanting to lower their carb intake... seeds are great! A good recipe for making this into a 'bar' form, is found on the Dot2Trot website... we make it all the time.... and if we omit the eggs from the recipe, it makes a great 'grain free granola' that we use on greek yogurt with some sugar free homemade jam! Super yummy! Never have made the porridge/noatmeal version though..

What a great idea, taking the minimalist concept of a capsule wardrobe and applying it to grocery shopping! That noatmeal recipe is brilliant too... I'll probably take pieces from both videos and use just one pot like in your video and add in some protein powder like in Autumn's video. We have a vegetarian in the house so we're basically all vegetarian now and need all the protein we can get. I'm glad you discovered canned lentils. LOL We use them in place of ground beef for tacos, shepherd's pie, etc. Of course, it's not quite like the real thing but loads of seasoning helps!

I also can veggies from my garden so just have to add a few ingredients to a jar to make a meal. Like with tomato sauce I can make spaghetti, chili, vegetable soup, etc. I didn't get to can this past year because I had my other corneal transplant so I really miss the homemade can goods, but am looking forward to canning next year.

Oatmeal and berries and flax seed, we use oat milk since I am dairy free, I love the dairy free yogurt but so high in sugar I only buy it as a real treat…

I meal plan because by the end of the day I end up with decision fatigue. I also have a capsule of sorts that works well on the weekends when I’ve cleared up some mental space.

Because I also enjoy the channel Pick Up Limes, I also grab at least 1 lime lol!! Olive oil and balsamic vinegar need to live in my pantry too, but I don't typically have to buy them every 2 weeks so, they wouldn't be on the regular list anyway. Hilary, I am now unable to buy or enjoy premade salad dressings lol!! Because of you, I have to make them all fresh and I look so forward to delicious salads with my dressings now!

This is a really great idea! I do have a question, can you link or share any good lentil recipes you have tried? I learn from you in each video. I truly appreciate your common sense approach to life, you remind me a lot of myself.

Ask utube and Google, there are LOTS recipes online! Also on vegan sites. I love them: taco, BBQ, burgers, loaf, sloppy joe's, as soup/stew with carrots, celery, garlic and onion, sometimes with added tomato paste, rice potatoes and veg, smashed on toast. Infinite possibilities, cheap and versatile protein, complex carbs and fiber! I've never seen them in a can. Make a bag and freeze them.

    Hi Hilary,
I just found your channel recently and have been watching many older videos. I loved, loved, loved your 2018 video on inexpensive home DIY projects. You are so innovative and creative! I have a question and hope you can help. I moved to another city for three years and rented my house out. When I came back, I had to spent days cleaning. The kitchen cabinets (laminate surfaces over plywood) still have some cooking grease/smoke from renters. I'd like to prime them and paint with chalk paint. Can you suggest a cleaner for super tough grease/smoke? Also, what should I use to prime after cleaning? I'd greatly appreciate all tips. Courtney

I roast almost everything in the oven, straight from the freezer, with olive oil salt and pepper or even just salt alone if I’m adding it to a dish and want to flavor after. Or I’ll add to soups and just throw them in 💛

I didn't realize they had canned lentils either. I am also a mainly Aldi shopper. I do get some items at different stores but it's typically like the meat section for gluten free stuff or snack items. I will say that's up every time I'm in a different store other than Aldi I have sticker shock over the regular prices. 😱
