“There are also new monsters, like the chawinga, which I created...” *as Chris lovingly strokes his blueray copy of Studio Ghibli’s Princess Mononoke below the camera’s view*
"My original monster the Chwinga". I think Studio Ghibli would like a word with you. Seriously its like the demon No Face and a kodama had kid that refused the cut its hair.
Al-mi'raj (like many of the creatures from the earliest Monster Manuals) is an actual creature from mythology, in this case Arabic mythologies. They were flesh eating creatures that devour large animals without even needing to put up much of a fight and their horns are pretty dangerous weapons. People in life were legit terrified of these creatures when the myths were still fresh enough to be believable and would turn to local witches to protect their villages from the creatures. So, hey, might look a little silly to us but, within the context of a D&D world, they can be quite serious.
Screw al-miraj, I'm using conjure lesser elementals to get those elemental spirits. Probably during downtime. I'll conjure a bunch of them, pile them up, and hug the pile.
Oh damn, it's the little forest spirit buggers from _Mononoke Hime..._ gdi Chris, just tell me they don't do that head-tilt thing...it's been 20 years and they still creep me the f**k out with that! D:
Out of curiosity, are the chwinga considered elementals because of some connection to Ubtao? As I recall, Ubtao was a primordial (an elemental who took part in the war against the gods) who was made a god after he killed a monster that the gods could not.
The almirage (I might have mispelled it) seems like an interesting familiar. I wonder how will players get the ability to summon them. I would be interesting to play a character similar to Radagast from the Tolkien stories that has an almirage familiar.
Nah man its got conditioning benefits for the hair, how do you think all those wizards maintain their luscious locks in middle earth? They got that brown wizard hook up.
DabIMON Storm King's Thunder has a few neat ones, especially a beast with just a little bit more than would be obvious. Also an elemental that is worth a look but you'll probably never be able to use. Tyranny of dragons has a few, primarily the ambush drake. Out of the Abyss has a whole boatload of demon lords. Those are just the ones I've seen.
Yeah, if you're just in the market for new monsters, Out of the Abyss and Curse of Strahd are probably your best bet. The former has eight demon lords that are all above CR 20, really solid representations of them for if you need a BBEG. Curse of Strahd actually has a pretty diverse array of unique creatures, but they tend to be lower level. They also give you Vistani curses, which there's a variety to choose from and you can apply them to human NPCs to give them a bit of character. Third in the running is probably Storm King's Thunder, which has options for diversifying giants by giving them alternate special attacks or traits. That said, all adventures have at least a few custom NPCs with their own special abilities, or facelifted versions of older creatures brought into the fifth edition folds. Also, I do recommend most every 5e adventure module, having bought all of them and played most of them. Storm King's Thunder (and now Tomb of Annihilation) are incredibly good adventures that are between homages to the classics and entirely new and unique adventures, and the rest are at least well put-together, if you can't find conent or story hooks you want to repurose for yourself. The only one that falls short IMO is the first two(Hoard of the Dragon Queen and Rise of Tiamat) , because they assume a lot of the DM who runs it (you gotta make some things up or handwaive them, there's a few dead ended plots and/or plot holes, and they don't give a lot of mechanics to things that desparately needed them, they just let the narrative drive it). If you're ever in need of a book to pick up and play a new campaign, they're all pretty quality though.
is there a way to get thenew monster stat blocks without the campaign module for those of us who are interested in the new monsters but not the campaign? If anyone knows a legal way could you please link it.
I mean, it might not even need to burrow for safety, it could fend off attackers with it's horn. Still, maybe stabbing the ground helps with the digging process.
So, basically, the new monster's are recycled forest spirits from Princess Mononoke? Kodamas? ua-cam.com/video/fmvS4mzWUkQ/v-deo.html Will be interesting to see what mechanics they get I guess. Tough to make something new when there is so much great material out there, not saying it was intentional in this case. I like the idea anyways

"Flying monkeys will also be very popular"
In other obvious news, the sky is blue and rain falls downwards.
Chiwinga = Studio Ghibli will be calling you soon with the interesting similarities..
Sen next wotc will publish an adventure about a girl raised by wolves :P
I created a druid based on San. Called her San Mononoke
Sen how about elemental/fey?
thank you i was thinking the exact same thing
I designed a monster based on the ohmu in nousica of the valley of the wind
The Chiwenga look like they are going to be a blast to bring to the story :)

Chris Perkins is making me choose between a dinosaur pet and a bunny pet and I don't know how I'll cope
Get Both!!
The unicorn bunny is spelled "Al-mi'raj" in case you wanted to find it. :)
I prefer "Bunnicorn" though
I'm super excited to read more about the Chiwinga!

"Expedition to the Barrier Peaks, which was an unusual adventure" That's putting it mildly
I love these videos so much. Also this is the specific one that I think may have actually convinced me to buy and run Tomb of Annihilation.

Aremag (Dragon Turtle) is Gamera (legendary Japanese Turtle monster) backwards.

Princess Monoke spirits!
Don't go pushing over strange Obelisks kids!
Unicorn Bunny = The Horned Rabbit = Dinosaur Ilumanti Confirmed

minus the bird poop from The Hobbit movies
Nah man its got conditioning benefits for the hair, how do you think all those wizards maintain their luscious locks in middle earth? They got that brown wizard hook up.
The Chiwinga have to have been inspired by the Kodama from Princess Mononoke?
neil ingham nope he got it from African cultural beliefs
My party and I ran into a group of Amerage quite recently
Those elementals remind me of the tree guys from princess mononoke lol
I never play the pre-made campaigns, but it seems like there are a lot of cool new monsters.
Are they worth checking out just for the monsters?

Dammit we needed those extra feys Chris !
The Chewinga (spelling?) really remind me of the little spirits in the forest from the movie Princess Mononoki... Great movie :)
I really want to be an aasimar Warlock of the Celestial with a white Almiraj as his familiar, because the Celestial would be a Unicorn.
Tomb of horror = hell adjacent. Annihilation it's neighbor.
I want a booklet of all the monsters Chris Perkins has made that hasnt caught on so I can run them. Feel like that would be cool.
The little tree spirits remind me of princess mononoke, or the kokiri in wind waker and botw
Session one of playing this our party almost got wiped by 4 Eblis. Was a rough fight.
Maybe it would help if ya guys talk e.g. with D&D/table-top gamers from india to check what kind of monsters could be cool to create.
is there a way to get thenew monster stat blocks without the campaign module for those of us who are interested in the new monsters but not the campaign? If anyone knows a legal way could you please link it.
My party and I have tried to domesticate every animal we've come across so far haha. Even a pteranodon that we named Pterry xD
Since no one else has said it, I will. San Dimas high school football rules!!
literally what i came down into the comments for
i want to be a moon druid who shapechange into a freaking unicornbunny :O
Are the chowinga going to be usable for the new Ranger beastmaster?
How do you spell the name of things Chris created? Berninga?
Chwinga
Tah
... And you left the last second to flying monkeys?! That warrants a full episode in its own right gaddamit!! 🙈
Ba'Those approves of these monsters.
Ah Slaadi. Chaos frogs 🤣
How the bunny-corn is supposed to make holes ? Its technicly impossible with this on the head, wtf guys... X)

Getting it
So they're Kodamas?
Are giant spiders in Tomb of Annihilation?
Yes
Love slaadi
monster my butt!!!! thats a cute bunny
Chiwinga looks like a ripoff from Mononoke Princess.
wizardlvl80 they have the same source of inspiration. Ghibli didn't invent Japanese folklore. :)
I am a dick for this but I'm not a huge fan of this set. I like about half of them and love maybe five. Mainly dat lich.
