      @@MG-yj6lo You're assuming that the other top teams will remain stagnant. Thunder, Wolves, Nuggets all have moves they can make to get better. Suns, Pelican, Spurs, Lakers, Clippers are outliers that make getting a good seeding, which played a major role in the playoffs, a little bit harder. There is also no guarantee that Luka/Kyrie are going to be healthy. Not marking the Mavs down for a repeat to the WCF, let alone the finals.

This is meant for fun, not life or death talk.

    • @chach1288
      @chach1288 2 місяці тому

      @@Chalk89 might as well start talking about whether or not Cooper Flagg will ever win a title… Players win titles when GM’s construct great teams. Thinking about Luka ever winning a title at 25 is outlandish. He will have 3 different roster constructions around him at minimum moving forward and who knows what that looks like. This isn’t a 1v1 league. Rosters play rosters. Luka won’t win with the current roster but that’s why the topic is awful. They are using Luka as the centerpiece of a discussion around Mavs management. Get the right pieces and the Mavs will win. Luka brings that much value. You just need more value around him. Not all players are expected to win in Jokic fashion carrying non all stars. That’s just extra impressive.

    The Mavs will definitely be in contention for a title for the next 3+ years IMO. Contrary to what Bill thinks, they do have some draft assets, tradeable contracts, and more importantly some young prospects to consolidate for a trade for a good wing shooter. Can't say they are available but a Trey Murphy/Cam Johnson type of wing is what they should target.
    If Lively can develop that corner 3 ball to space the floor, and if they stick with Hardy (who played great vs Minnesota) to become the backup G / 6th man off the bench, and add a wing shooter, they'll be back. Also when/if Luka gets his body and defensive mindset to be full time instead of a game to game thing, they'll win it all. I think Kyrie's game will age gracefully in the next 2-4 years.

    • @michaelcorcoran8768
      @michaelcorcoran8768 2 місяці тому

      I don't know. I mean you have to keep Kyrie playing at that amazing level. But he's getting older too. They really need another depth scoring piece/wing. And they need to make sure Kyrie doesn't go off the rails at any point, or doesn't get injured et. . It's not impossible that Dallas could win the title with this core, but I don't think it's likely.

      @user-sq1bs5lm2p 2 місяці тому

      @@michaelcorcoran8768 Yeah I get what you're saying. I think with Kyrie they've got a 3 season window to do something. I do think they'll trade for a shooting wing without giving up their top 6-7 in the playoff rotation. After that, if Lively or Hardy can make that leap, I think they are in contention. Contention is subjective but to me that would be like you're a top 3 seed in the conference and can drop a roster vs the best of the best and win at least 2 games in a series. How the actual matchups/injuries/rosters all change come playoff time in the West, we'll just have to see.

When you hear KD talk about guarding young Melo who could bully you but you couldn’t get physical with him or he’d draw the foul and make the FT’s, who played at his own pace being able to score from everywhere inside out, ducking you in the post, hitting iso elbow and 1-2 dribble pull-ups, and the deep ball. That’s Luka when you add playmaker as a passer.

Turned out they shot 25 % on those. Washington, Jones, Maxie... those are not great 3 point shooters unless its a corner 3 on catch and shoot.

    Kind of remarkable how bad the coverage has been from ESPN, really can't get out of the idea that the event theyre building up to is the offseason, rather than the product on the court. I feel like this pod, as much as its about the future prospects of the mavs, it really shifts the emphasis of the game to on court performance, growth and dynamics, instead of sensationalism what ifs. refreshing

    Simmons needs to stop hating on Kyrie. Was he great in the finals ? Not really. But just in general trough the playoffs he was really good. He would score 16 points,yet I loved him on the court. Passing,defending,hustling,moving the ball. As a Mavs fan,nothing but good things to say about Kyrie in Dallas.

    He won Euroleague MVP and championship at 18 then came to the NBA and was a top 5 player by year 2.
    By year 6 he has 5 First Teams a finals berth and a WCFs berth.
    Calling him not a winner is just bias against his style of play which is fine it can be annoying sometimes! Just say thats the reason.

    In the next 2 to 3 seasons, the Mavs will have *prime* Luka + Dereck Lively in seasons 3 & 4 + they will have either Kyrie or his max slot to offer to FAs + THJ's expiring contract & potentially PJ Washington & others (depending if the Mavs want to keep them & they want to stay or not) + a few rooks like Jaden Hardy & O-Max (if they develop into anything).
    *Prime* Luka + Dereck Lively + Kyrie/max slot = Mavs serious contenders for the next 5 seasons. It comes down to how good the Mavs are at evaluating FAs and bringing in the right complimentary pieces. 2 to 3 seasons from the now, the Mavs will also be able to deal future 1st round picks to sweeten any deals they want to make. Conclusion: Luka wins a title. He's just too damn good. *Luka should have been the MVP this season*

    When people discuss the best players to never win a title, you'll note that the majority of individuals named are from a a generation ago. Iverson, Malone, Stockton, Reggie Miller, Dominique Wilkins, Ewing, Nash, Baylor. When you think of contemporaries - the last few years, it's Chris Paul, Paul George, James Harden. And even then, they're older.
    Doncic is 25. In an era of a lot of player movement, it's almost impossible to be so great and not win at least one ring. He will.

It's reasonable to be a sceptic even though he has behaved and has actually been focusing on playing basketball and being a decent team-mate this season. My guess is that the main reason for that is that the contract offer he got from the Mavericks might have been one of few he actually recieved *at all*. He finally got humbled.

    After the 2011 Finals, I'll never believe with 100% certainty that anyone's window is slammed shut EXCEPT James Harden and Russell Westbrook, who are both incapable of winning anything beyond regular season stat titles. Nothing about that 2011 Dallas run felt like "this is their year." I didn't even even believe it was going to happen until about a minute and half to go in game six. So no, Luka's window isn't closed. Hell, even if they add Westbrook and/or Harden, Luka is young enough to wait out their retirements :P

    It’s interesting; most people who are credible judges of asset management hated the Mavs deadline. Giving up what they did for two guys in PJ Washington and Daniel Gafford who by themselves don’t move the needle seemed preposterous. However, from almost the second those two arrived the Mavs were a top 3 team in the league in every conceivable metric, in large part because PJ Washington provided everything defensively they weren’t getting from Grant Williams. All throughout the playoffs, people extolled the Mavs front office for making the moves they did, and there were a fair share of Mavs fans who openly mocked the Kevin Peltons of the world who wrote about how they hated Dallas giving up all those firsts for what amounts to two role players.
    All of that context prefaces the thing people here who are calling this conversation asinine are missing; as Bill said very early on in this discussion, the Mavs have no avenue to get better going forward. Their first round picks are gone well into the future. Kyrie is going to be 33 by next spring. Derrick Jones is gone. Tim Hardaway Jr. is next to impossible to move. Oh, and the Thunder just improved tremendously and will only continue improving as their core develops, the Nuggets aren’t going anywhere, Memphis is going to have an elite starting 5 next year, Minnesota has avenues to make moves, the Rockets are entering their contention window in the next few years, and last but not least Wemby and the Spurs are likely to be contending within the next 5 years. The West is going to be a landmine, and the reward for getting out of it is facing Boston or a team good enough to beat Boston in the Finals. It’s not the least bit crazy to think this was Dallas’ best shot, and I wonder if in 3 years from now people look back at this past deadline and have a much different viewpoint of what Dallas did, Finals appearance be damned.
