I've never read a book so fast! ua-cam.com/users/postUgkx1_veP7CApJK_GWy_TczaMciuG64PqJeU Learning about his dogs and experiences was just the icing on the cake - bed this book through and through. We're working with our new pup and Brandon's advise was just what I needed. Wish he'd just come and train for me haha but it's good for us and happy to have this new set of tools to use on our pup.

THANK YOU for actually talking about how lonely it can be to train a reactive dog. Traning my puppy - found on the streets - was one of the most lonely processes I've ever been through. He's almost 16 months old and doing much better but is still not out of the woods but a long mile. Big dogs, new experiences, certain male figures... they're all things that can tick him right off and are things we're working on

I feel you so much.....looking for a 'training buddy' who doesn't get spooked and I can explain why I do the things I do with my dog. Btw, it is not helping that I live in a country where dogs are not treated very well (mine was dumped in the woods I think) and I don't speak the language.

Completely agree, peoples support for the adopt don't shop movement does not line up with peoples understanding for someone working with a reactive dog. If you are not a reactive dog owner remember a bit of friendliness and a kind word goes a long way!

I’ve been a fan of Zak for years! Since I got started looking to get a dog back in 2013. My boy is a polite old man now, and I haven’t watched much of Zak’s video over the past few years because I haven’t needed any help with my dog. But I recently got hit with a big case of puppy fever, and (even though I’m not getting a puppy for a long while) came back for advice to setting a puppy up for success. And can I just say, I came for Kona, but the new series is so good I have just binge watched the last six months of videos in a week and a half. They are fantastic videos. I can’t wait to see the progress that Chop makes, and to see who’s next. Thank you Zak and Bree for the wonderful content!

Zac I am a fanatic dog lover and my true love is pit bulls, mastiffs, and most any other large what most would call challenge going dogs. I’ve always been able to have well behaved well socialized loving dogs despite taking on some challenging cases. But what you have been able to show me has changed everything! The patience and the loving commitment you put into each dog is amazing. Thank you for these great videos!

thank you both for the reactive dog 'pep talk'.. its difficult and embarrassing..especially when i see dog younger than him not being reactive.. it's been a year and a half and we are very slowly closing the gap. sometimes the 'gap' changes..just depends on the dog he sees and what mindset he is in at that moment. chop reminds me a lot of my dude..

Zack, I want to thank you for these videos you’ve done of fostering and training these adult dogs. My family brought a puppy into our home almost a year ago (he will be 1 in a couple of days!) and I got so frustrated at the lopsided responsibilities and his over-the-top personality that I was ready to give up. Watching these videos have encouraged me to just start over, pretend as if he is a new dog and start from square one, a fresh start. He’s a great dog with bad manners and you have given me hope that I can help him become a respectable man in our family and society!

My dog used to be the same as Chop when it came to seeing a dog besides the barking. He whined/yelped loudly, lunged, tried to chew the leash and wouldn’t pay attention to me for even his favourite things. With daily screensaver training outside the dog park he now a couple months later just looks and as long as they are further than a few metres I can get his attention. If I catch it in time I can have him sit stay as a dog passes on walks. Love seeing the progress in a dog. It’s especially exciting and rewarding for me when you’ve had to put in a lot time into developing the specific behaviour.

Loved the discussion with Bree about working with reactive dogs. My puppy, who is not even a year old yet, wants to play with every dog that he sees on our walks and gets frustrated like Chop if we have to distance ourselves from a dog that gets too close. We're working on it slowly but surely, but it's nice to hear others' stories as it makes it less of a lonely experience :)

Well done Zac. I know just what you mean having a reactive Collie. Those wow moments when you can walk away from another dog and keep the focus is amazing. Also Bree I've been feeling very down and excluded the last 18 months since we rehomed this extremely reactive young Collie. My 3 would mix with up to 15 other dogs and we could walk and talk, now I can't even say hello over the field without her creating a fuss. Apart from a couple of friends with very quiet dogs that I've been able to join in and walk with and even able to have her off lead. Keep up the good work Zac Bree, Inertia and Chomp..

Inertia's overdramatic reaction to falling on her back is such a Border Collie thing 😅

  • @kat200214
    @kat200214 2 роки тому +2

Happy to see another video! Hi, it's me again! Glad you intervened when Chop got too rough with Inertia. In the moment, these things can be stressful, but I would have intervened right here at 11:43, instead of a little bit later where Inertia felt the need to warn Chop back again, as he continued to be too pushy and step over her boundaries. The fact that she did not recover right away after she fell, and didn't bounce back up and chase him back playfully, is why I would have intervened too. Dogs trip and fall, and sometimes get too rough during play, that's normal, and a lot of times they can bounce back and continue playing. When they don't: I intervene calmly and redirect the pushy dog away, while comforting the other one separately. For the resource guarding of the toy with Inertia at 12:24, I do agree that this is inappropriate behavior, but Interia did push too much. She was going into his space for his ball, he should have warned her more before snapping, but I think his feeling to want and keep his toy is fair and respectable. Like with humans. If someone was sticking their hands in my plate and my space, I would tell them to go away. I would do it politely though, but Chop is still learning!
15:20, So important! These are most of our walks, long line or off-leash in a secured area so we can meet their exercise & mental enrichment needs. Training is important, but those other needs come first, and cannot be met on a short leash walking at your side on a street. I think that going for exercise/exploration walks, and then fitting in short, fun bursts of training in these walks (but also at home a lot too!).
18:08 So important to work where the dog CAN work. Trying to train when a dog is over threshold is not only useless and frustrating for the handler, it's frustrating and unfair to the dog. Gaining distance, and then rewarding calmer behaviors and good behaviors is much more effective and fair to the dog. Putting dogs in a situation that is scary/frustrating/exciting, and then punishing them for reacting to the stimulus is unfair and cruel. Gaining distance is so much better! Also: Dogs choose the distance that they are comfortable at. Saying that: "Alright this is a good spot. The dog should listen now" is not a good idea. The dog defines how far they are comfortable. Some dogs need 100, even 300 feet between them and a trigger to start training.
23:50 He may have not taken rewards here (I would just step back then), but I would have been rewarding like crazy here! Lots of treats, praise, physical affection, and ball play.
27:08 Yes! Be very proud of any success. It's important to tolerate other issues when working on one specific one. No one is perfect, and we can't fix everything at the same time! Chop did fantastically!

And yes, I felt very alone, and embarrassed as I was trying to get my dog under control. It did get better, but it took LOTS of hard work and patience. His was all excitement based. I have a reactive dog who is muzzled. It can so lonely! I literally avoid everyone who has a dog when I'm on a walk. With patience and understand though she is making lots of progress!

This is such a great lesson for me, I have a reactive dog, luckily she is a miniature schnauzer so it’s not too hard to hold her back.

My dog is incredibly fearful. Shes not really a barker, but when she seems something "scary" she will try and bolt away from it. This means we cannot simply go for hikes and such because at any point she may decide shes done and pull and lunge to get away from the scary thing. Its been really tough honestly. Thank you for talking about the realities of dog reactivity, its very lonely. Its also a sad reality that the dog/life you imagined for yourself, isnt what is really happening and that takes time to accept and work on

You are the 2nd dog person on UA-cam I've seen with those shoes! First one being Molly Burke, the blind girl who just got her new guide dog Benelux/Bennix. Also, do the narration clips in your other place mean Chop has found a family? Fingers crossed!

Yes! more on resource guarding between dogs with toys/food! I recently discovered my boy guards only around other dogs, not me and would like to learn how to manage it!

Wow another awesome video and lots of great tips. Of course my dog is 6 lbs full grown but we’ve used your videos to train her. She thinks she’s 100 lbs haha

This is a fantastic video! You really portrayed the kind of slow and patient time it takes to work under threshold, although I would rather owners spend significantly less time over threshold. I tend to push it too much with my personal dogs at about this rate and when I manage to keep things more consistently under threshold I see more progress. I would say that with a dog who is reacting out of fear, it's more important to avoid going over than a dog like chop who is just wanting to be friendly.

Great video.. Show that dog training takes time and dedication.. and it is NEVER a quick fix... With dogs like that we actually use Bachs flower remedies alongside the training. Works wonders :) Aldaron is the place to go to - they have all the special blends for animals... or make spec. blends for your dog.. They are VERY good at what they do.
