I put vegetable oil in a loco once and it made so much smoke it looked like it was on fire. Smelled like fries. Gave me the munchies everytime i ran it.
Food grade mineral oil is the best. It's the same oil you put on a wood cutting board. It pure and has no other contaminants in it to gum anything up. You can add a few drops of cedar oil to it if you like that old time smoke fluid scent, just be sure to shake well before using as it tends to separate from the mineral oil. Smokes very well in post war smoke units. For the newer locomotives just my opinion, Lionel smoke fluid works best. It's not too expensive, is designed for the newer units and comes in unscented or some different scents.
My Steamers smoke like that using MTH Smoke Fluid. I still use the fluid from the bottle I bought in 2014! I only put in about 4 to 6 drops at a running and it can last for hours or days, depending on how much I run my Locomotive. It is also Mineral Oil based with scent added. I like the Christmas Tree Scent ... brings me back to my Lionel days when I was a little kid ... and that was a loooooooong time ago! LOL!!!
I added 4 drops of cinnamon leaf 100% essential oil to my Lionel. It's Christmas time and it works great and smells great too! Well, if you like the smell of cinnamon.
We've always joked at our club that we were going to get weed vape to put in the O scale stuff and have our wives do a bake sale at the same time. Has always made me wonder if it'd work...
What if you used vape juice? It's the same principal right? From what I know about vaping and how it works, could it work? Could you use a vape juice to make it smoke?
Would love to see you put it in then telling people what you did. People need to see how other people do things to see if it works. Just a thought and thank you for the tip
I just received a bottle of the Mega Steam smoke fluid that's supposed to smell like a coal burner, but so far the liquid has more of a smell that reminds me of a Christmas wreath or something.
The secret is it needs to be diluted with another fluid. If you can find that out you would be good to go. My guess is alcohol but that might start your smoke unit on fire. It would cause it to burn faster though. I will try it and let you know.
If you actually compare the amount of smoke coming from this and the real locomotive, These locos are putting as much smoke out as a diesel locomotive. Far from how much steam the real thing actually puts out when compared to scale. But I will try to use the mineral oil or baby oil regardless and see.
Have you tried LAMP OIL? The good thing about lamp oil is the oily residue on top of the loco (or anywhere else) evaporates over night.....GONE! No, I've never seen it catch on fire...... doesn't the baby oil leave an oily residue?
@@TheSteamKing I didn't think MTH and Broadway Limited had the same smoke units MTH trains smoke ten times better than any Broadway Limited I've ever seen. please correct me if I'm wrong.
The bachman engines have a cheaper smoke unit in them. Bachmann engines also have a lifetime warranty so you should be able to send it in and get it fixed. It just sounds like the smoke unit is broken if it's not smoking at all.
Can't handle the smell. Back to JT Megasteam. The TRUE secret to smoke fluid is how to clean it off my locomotives. Again, JT has a product that is somewhat effective, but not as effective as I'd like. Anyone have any suggestions on how to clean up mineral oil/smoke fluid without stripping the paint off the locomotive?
Andrew Kiely I dont know that I have any cures for that. But I must say I myself never really liked the oily mess on my engines. I would take them apart and clean the shells with a mild kitchen soap then dry them. However, a couple years ago summer came around and the trains went on the back burner. That following fall I noticed the oily mess around the boiler was gone, just evaporated. I dusted them off and they were good as new again with no ill effects done to the paint. Take it for what it’s worth.
I have found some smoke fluids tend to "eat" the paint off plastic bodies loco's as well as disfigure the plastic shell, metal bodied loco's usually don't have much of a problem with being disfigured, but depending on the paint, it could flake off, had that happen. I do recommend JT MegaSteam used it for years and it never caused any damage to any of my plastic or metal loco's. Used it in O and G sized trains. Recently, I have been using "mineral oil" since it does work and makes tons of smoke, especially if using fan driven smoke units, but DO NOT USE mineral oil inside or where it will be inhaled on a steady basis, it is a laxative and if you enjoy Montezuma's Revenge, breathe it all in all you want and use it indoors, but don't say I didn't warn you! LOL For indoor use, definitely spend the few extra $$ and buy the JT MegaSteam fluids, and if outside, make sure your railroad isn't where the "smoke" from mineral oil {if you use it} can accumulate where folks are standing and watching your trains {including yourself!}.
I have to wonder about coal oil. Not sure about the viscosity, but it should smell like coal. However the oil burners would need something else. Any ideas?
at the moment no, however I believe the technology is right around the corner. roadway limited has announced whistle smoke in their new big boy so it shouldn't be long b4 we see that same effect in the cylinders either
Working on one using a - e-cigarette innards and plan to use a cell phone vibrator motor for the fan motor. .Still in the works ,but seems small enough to make up for the limited space.
Take the weight off the motor shaft and put a fan blade from a ho scale model on it .Metal of course. The motor is 1/4 ich long ,by 3/16 or about 7mm long including motor shaft by 5mm wide then put it in a horizontal tube connected to the smoke unit that is vertical .
HARPO1ME ok thst sounds good. Maybe i m gonna try that. i just finished on a smokegenerator for a industrial building. Now its time to hook up every single house to the smokegen. :D
so that's not smoke fluid ,, that's baby oil ,, ??? before I try that I would have to see you take a bottle of that ,, and squeeze some into the loco , and watch it work ,, not to be mean but seeing is beleiveing
yea man I can show the bottle and all smoke fluid is is just mineral oil. baby oil fits into that categeory. If you add me on facebook I can show you what bottle I use.
Look at some of my other videos with these models, I'm still using the same fluid but the smoke is far greater. It was just cold the day I filmed this.
Not even close. I use JT's Mega Steam "Big Boy Premium Blend" for my HO scale MTH Big Boy #4014, and let me tell you, it smells good and smokes like the real deal!! And in the two years I've had it, I've only used 1/4 of a bottle of it, and I have five bottles.

Pretty cool stuff Clint, thanks for sharing!
Yeah I treat my engines well. I keep them well lubricated.
Thanks for the tip. I have a remote control Pershing Tank that uses smoke fluid and I think I'll try your idea with it and see how it works.

Can I use MTH protosmoke wood scent smoke fluid in a bli paragon 4 steam locomotive? Kinda new to the smoke thing so I'm not sure if I can.

Can the use of baby oil harm the locomotive or smoke unit over time?Just wondering how safe it is to use.
Thanks
As long as you don't over fill the smoke unit then no. Even if you do you should be fine as long as it stays off the brushes.
I started using that in 1995 on an engine and never bought smoke oil again.
Can't stand the smell of non of the smoke.Great info
Thanks for the video, and the information!
I tried to use the mineral oil and it screwed-up the heating coil
It's flammable and can shoot sparks or flames be careful
Does the baby oil mess the steam engine
Can you put Rubbing Alcohol in the smoke units ?
Dude! 78,000 views!!! Congrats Clint! I’ll give you a call soon
Thanks Adam!
Will it work with o scale
Yes, it’s the same technology. Add abt 3-6drops in it. 3-4drops is abt right for most older engines.

Yup. Tried and there was residue
So what other homemade smoke fluids options is recommended for a Lionel engine?
All of my favorite strippers had that baby oil fragrance.
So what your saying is you use baby oil in your steam engines?? Now is that just baby oil mixed with something else????
At one point I think I put WD-40 down the smoke hole, not to much eh amount of smoke but did the smell fill the room!
What size of a smoke unit should I get for my 4-6-2 Flying Scotsman loco?
If you're talking about installing your own smoke unit I have no idea my friend. I would probably look on some message boards and ask around.
What is the brand and model# of the smoke generator that you are using, the chuffing is timed very well with the audio.. Thanks

yes you can!
That’s a cool tip
What model of train is the one closest to the camera and about how much would one run?
That's a Broadway limited new heaven I-4. I have a review of it on my channel. Not sure how much they are now probably upwards of $500

Is there a way to get the smoke from white to black ?
Not that I know of no
Hmm very interesting. The only problem I have is that I hate the smell of baby oil. :/ I guess I can try the mineral oil.
i was wondering is there a way to get atual smell that the steam engines had back them or like the steam engine at dollywood
there is smoke fluid that you can buy that smells like coal smoke if you want that authentic smell.
how well will this work in a lionel starter set that has a smoke unit? Its the lionel NYC 0-8-0
It should work just fine. Any model train with a smoke unit uses the same basic principles to work.

Honestly that comes down to what model you have. There are a lot of great articles in different forum froups online. I would try there.

D. O'H. To be honest I'm not sure. If it's oil based then it's possible but I would probably just stick to mineral oil.
