Same, I feel kinda disappointed and click baited. If you’re interested in a quick look at some fabric made from shell search “How was it made? Japanese hikihaku obi | V&A”. About halfway they show fabric woven from mother of pearl thread.
Just a heads up for the future. You don't have to alter the dress to fit a mannequin. You can pad the mannequin out to fit the dress. Museums do this all the time with historical garments.
@@blueclarice I highly recommend getting a yard or so of polar fleece fabric in a neutral color and cutting it into curved banana/cup/bowl shapes where there's an arch that's fat in the middle and tapers at the ends. make them in a bunch of different widths and thicknesses. that shape is magic for layering up to pad out a garment and the polar fleece layers sticks to each other so you often only need to pin or tape the bottom or top piece into place. Each layer adds around a quarter inch and since the ends are all tapered at different angles they can blend down fairly easily.
Look up drag queen padding for the shapes of the padding they use to fill out their costumes. The hip pads are shaped like Africa! I'm fascinated by the art and artists of drag and all it takes to make such stunning transformations.
There is a lady (I think in Italy) who is one of the last people on earth who knows how to actually produce golden colored thread from an oyster called "seawool" . The Romans loved it but it is really hard work so nobody wants to carry on the skill.
@@randoexpresso1105Not sure if you found her yet but I think her name is- Chiara Vigo . She goes diving at night to harvest oyster salvia and weaves them together, it's called seasilk. Seawool is made of plastic bottles and grounded oyster shells. Hope this helps!
The coincidence is crazyyy 😂 by any chance are you open to new online friends? 😊 it’s just my interests align w ur circumstances so it made me curious 👀
As a long time sewer, I find that basting (and other extra fussy prep work) often makes assembly go much more smoothly. I ALWAYS baste zippers in place before going to the sewing machine. I really hate hand sewing too, so you know if I'm hand basting it must be worth it. Nothing leaves my sewing room looking less than professionally finished. Gonna try painting fabric next. Got my supplies but I'm gonna do some studying on it before I dig in.
Bravo for taking on CORSET WORK on only your second dress! I majored in Fashion Merchandising and I didn't even do boning for my final project because I was afraid to mess it up! Your work, your story, your dress and YOU are BEAUTIFUL! Just stay slayin' all day! 🙌🏽💖
A beautiful lady, in a beautiful dress, telling a beautiful message about a beautiful shellfish. I adore the color you chose. You have an amazing talent. ❤
this dress turned out so beautifully and i love the message behind it :) very inspiring way to combine science and cosplay, and so cool that it got put on display. great work as always blue!
SO AMAZING!!! Would have never in a thousand years guessed this was only your second time making a dress, it is absolutely stunning. Having previously attended a number of ecology/invasive species conferences, I just know how many people would love your amazing work and the message behind it. ❤
I'm so inspired by your honesty throughout this whole process, I always feel pressured to make the process look "perfect"...but it's so normal to make mistakes, and so realistic (and honorable) to show that not every step of the process went 100% perfectly. I have so many worries about my projects not going well that I feel paralyzed at the thought even starting them, because so much of what I see online is people who are experts or can edit things to make them look perfect...anyway. I just really appreciate your genuity. I hope to see more videos that allow you crossover between science and costuming in the future 😊
I totally relate to this feeling! It sometimes seems like everyone knows how to make everything perfectly, so I’m happy to show that’s not really the case. I struggle a lot but I always end up having a lot of fun!! I hope you also have fun making your future projects and you try things you’re not sure if you can make. As crafters we just gotta trust the process and hope everything comes out okay :) !!! I’m in talks with more scientists to make their research into clothing so let’s hope that works out 🤞🏾

As someone with a longstanding interest in both costuming/fashion AND marine inverts since childhood............I think you might be the coolest person ever, actually 😭💙
Just a heads up in case nobody mentioned it yet, but you really want shells to be wet when you potentially aerosolize them by grinding, polishing, or drilling them because you could end up inhaling heavy metals built up in their shells. A Japanese artist died that way after making a sculpture out of oyster shells. She was only in her thirties
Love the dedication of basting the layers together- that was definitely the best move (especially considering you picked a rlly difficult fabric to work with)! Also, on a personal note, it felt really great for to see this video considering I am also a seamstress who cares a lot about the environment so it was cool to see someone who shared my two passions :)
