And he just returned this week as well :)
Bill is a friend of the show and we couldn’t be happier. As is Jason Zinoman and Scott Ryan who also wrote books about Dave & Company.

Mr. Carter brilliantly wrote several terrific books that I have read, reread, and read again. Thanks for sharing. This show is truly magnificent.

They were a huge part of my life. LOL. For me, Dave and TS were the greatest two hours of Broadcast Late Night Television when I was in my 20's.

Interviewer gushed a little too much here but I love the subject. I'll sub and see what else comes out of this podcast.

You won’t be able to watch an episode without seeing Mike gush; he can’t help it. Bill was a dream guest for him; literally over 25 years of wanting to have a conversation with the great reporter/author. That being said, if you can get past his enthusiasm, there is a LOT of depth in many of his questions/topics. Thanks for giving us a try. Set your expectations to ‘mediocre’ and you’ll be fine.

It’s an incredible read, and ‘The War for Late Night’ is just as good if not better.

I enjoyed the CNN series he did on the history of Late Night, but it was so packed with commercials, and that was frustrating. But, he has no control over all of that. I agree totally with what was said about Dave taking over for Johnny. For years, people said how Dave got screwed and he should have taken over for Johnny. But, Dave turned out just fine. He did very well financially and he had freedom at CBS that he would not have had at NBC in the 11:35 slot. Plus the strong franchise was built at CBS that did not exist previously. As was mentioned, it's all about the host. It's about watching Dave or Johnny or Jay, and The Tonight Show has not been the same since Johnny left. But, Dave has carved out a legacy that will put him in the same category as Johnny forever.

Without doubt. The combination of a strong personality and charisma. Ferguson and Conan have it in spades as well.

29:59 Story that might get Carson to call Carter.
    33:10 Carson calls back.
37:15 Letterman and Conan’s respective response to sit-out deals to work for NBC and get the Tonight Show later.
45:34 Jay is very sensitive. Didn’t like the accusations.
46:28 Leno is complicated and difficult to understand. Letterman is weird but understandable.
    57:49 Tina Fey
1:31:15 Dave would’ve gotten the show if he had an agent who fought for him.
Jay was really lucky to get the Tonight Show:
    * His friend Letterman saved his career by having him as a guest many times
    * Garry Shandling left to do his show.
    * Joan Rivers wouldn’t change her act, wasn’t selected to take over from Johnny and went to Fox and never talked to him again.
    * Dave didn’t put it in his contract to take over the Tonight Show because he was afraid it would offend Johnny.

Late Night is done because the last 4 good ones Leno, Letterman, Conan and Ferguson are all retired. The ones now are just left wing loons and very unfunny

The changing of the guard has certainly been interesting in how opinionated these hosts were. Back in the day it would happen from time to time as well, Dick Cavet being a good example.
