The Letterman Podcast 150 Alex Hazard #letterman #thelettermanpodcast #intern
Episode 150 of The Letterman Podcast features Alex Hazard as our guest. Alex started as an intern during the final chapter of Late Show with David Letterman, a role that ultimately led to a full-time position in the audience coordination department. For Alex, his time at the Ed Sullivan Theater was pure magic.
In this episode, Alex shares his journey, from how he first landed the internship to the thrill of being brought back full-time. He and Mike dig into memories from dozens of tapings, unforgettable behind-the-scenes moments, and even the Live on Letterman Concert Series. While Alex went on to work on shows like Jerry Springer, nothing compared to the time he spent at Late Show-an era that left an indelible mark on him and continues to be one of the most memorable times of his life.
And now, a note from our cherished sponsor: If you’ve been waiting all your life to own some authentic Late Show swag, wait no longer! Visit hello-deli.com, run by the one and only Rupert Jee, and turn those dreams into merch reality.
Finally, a humble (and only slightly desperate) request from us: please like, share, subscribe, and maybe even leave a nice comment. Or don’t. But if you do, we might just love you forever.

A great observation was made here, comparing the spontaneity of sports vs Letterman's show. The camera operators for Dave's show needed to be alert and on their toes at all times, so they would not miss anything that could contribute to the quality of the program. I had the pleasure of meeting and talking to Jeff Altman about 23 years ago in Steubenville,Ohio. I was a D.J back then and had done a few events for a Family there, from time to time, and I had seen Jeff mingling with them but I never approached him. Anyway, their kids had graduated (I did their parties),and were starting to get engaged and getting married,so I did one of their weddings. I was playing dinner music, some Sinatra,etc...and I saw Jeff walk up by the speakers on the dance floor, smoking a cigar, really Digging my song selection. Now,I decided to say Hello. I said: "Did anyone ever tell you that you Look like Jeff Altman?"...He puffed on his cigar and smiled with a twinkle in his eye and said: Why?...Do you think he's FUNNY?". I hiked up my trousers like the Dad in one of his classic skits and I said " If you DON'T Think so,I'll flip you like a flapjack!" He smiled, held out his hand said: "I'm Jeff Altman,Pleased to meet you!" We talked for a few and I found out that the Father of the Bride of this Family that I did events for was Jeff's college roommate and they kept in close touch. Jeff would fly in for Family events...I got his autograph and a pleasant memory of meeting a comedic Legend...I was Smart enough to Not bring up the whole PINK LADY debacle, but that would've been an Interesting Tell...👍❤

Brad Gilmore should host a real late night talk show on TV because he knows how late night TV works. Also, I am glad that he fell in love with late night TV very early on in his life. That reminds me of me because I fell in love with late night TV when I was 8. I watched Letterman, Conan, Kilborn, Ferguson, and Daly on Fridays and during the summer, and then Johnny Carson passed away. When that happened, and when my parents started talking about him, I started watching his show. That led me to Steve Allen, Jack Paar, Tom Snyder, Craig Ferguson, Arsenio Hall, and Spike Feresten among others. Back then, I have always been trying to entertain myself and others, but I didn't know how to do that. After watching all of the late night talk show hosts, I realized that I could entertain people on a late night talk show host. That's when I started thinking about hosting a late night talk show on TV, and that led to me hosting Weeknight Update on UA-cam, but that's not the point. A funny coincidence is I knew a guy who drummed in a local rock band back in the late 80s and 90s whose nickname was Zippy. I'm not sure if that stuck into his 50s

Yes! You were able to get an iconic musician from David Letterman's Late Night show and Late Show on your show this week. Yes! Anton is great along with Paul, Sid, Will, and all of the others. You knew that Dave was cool with Paul Shaffer and various incarnations of his band.

I love all of your interviews with the band members like Paul, Will, Felicia, Al, Tom and this one. Clearly, Dave was a fan of drums and the art of drumming. He would ask the drummers "Are those your drums?" I fondly remember drum solo week where they had the iconic Neil Peart on the show.

Another good guest snag for you... question- Have you ever received feedback that Mr. Letterman is aware of this podcast?

Anton is the reason I actually started watching Late Night back around 1987. My friend who was a year older told me the drummer for Ace Frehley actually drums on the show so I would put a tape in and record it each night more so in early 1988. I got to meet Anton on Nov 15 2004 (Jerry Springfield, Jamie Oliver) after the show and he was super friendly and took the time to have a photo with this big dork. Thank you Anton for taking the time. It meant a lot. I actually have purchased the old Blue Yamaha kit that Anton played on from 86-92 around there. I know he had a wrapped kit with those white covers on them. I'm pretty sure that was the same kit. I love how it plays. I will use it to record one day and I think I'll try to record myself playing Rip It Out or similar. Thanks again Anton for all the great performances on drums plus all the goofy skits. It was a huge part of my youth.

Anton's blue Yamaha Tour Custom drums were the very drums that I wanted to play in the late 1980s. I ended up buying white Power Tour Customs in 1989. Not quite in the same league, but I tried my best.

@@fortedrummer3026 And do they sound great? I love mine. I had a Pearl Birch (early 80's kit) kit, then a Premier birch. This one is Mahogany and it has really nice punch.
