The late 90's early 2000's was a good period for odd, interesting Independent Films. I have never seen Gummo, in fact I don't remember it. The ones that stick out to me is Pi from '97 or '98 (title is actually the mathematical symbol), 'The Believer' from 2001 I think. About a Jewish Kid that is a neo-nazi skinhead or something, then there are the David Lynch Films like 'Lost Highway' from '97 Oh yeah, there is the controversial Film 'Lolita' from 1997
