The way to do it on a Windows Computer is with ALT-955. There is no quick way to do it on a Macintosh, however, you can create a system-wide text replacement shortcut in preferences. For example, typing :lambda: can be automatically replaced with λ symbol. Highlight the above by dragging the left mouse over the symbol and turning it blue.
Right click on the blue then select copy with left mouse, then right click where you want the symbol to be, then with left mouse select paste.

I don't know what to tell you. It could be, you have a non-english keyboard setting. I recommend a mac. It's really easy to type π.
