Love the old 360 FE. Had one in a '73 F-100 Ranger XLT w/ a T-19 tranny, posi-trac w/ 3.70 gears. 600 Holley on stock 390 intake, headers & dual glasspacks. Made a great mud truck for hunting trips.
Oh my fkn God. Thanks for this video. I could not find out y my cam aliment was off. Dam c spacer. I watched videos all day and compcams. Can't even get thru to there help line. Thank you so much for this video
Great job. Very informative video. I have a 1976 F250 Highboy that I’m going to replace the timing chain and gears . I’ll use this video as my go to. Thank You.🐊
Glad you found it helpful! Just make sure that you put the front cover seal in the proper direction-and not backwards like I did! Good luck with your project and thanks for watching! 👍🏻👍🏻
Great Video! I have a 1965 Forf Thunderbird that I am replacing the timing chain in now. Your sela didn't go in because the seal was in backwards, but you know that by now I am sure JMACit
That cam gear you took off is the OEM gear. They were aluminum with a nylon coating around the teeth. I suspect all the nylon got brittle & broke off. That probably why your chain was so loose.
I slip the timing cover on with the spacer/sleeve inside it already and then bolt it down. That way it's perfectly centered on the seal for a no leak fit.
This is the first timing job I've ever done. I've just gotten to the point where the timing cover is off and off and i can see the timing set. The key for my crank is a couple degrees left of being at 12, and the notch on the sprocket for the cam is at 12 instead of 6 like in your video. (I did set the engine at TDC before i started taking things apart.) Do I just remove the old set and put on the new one or do I have to set it up so it looks like how yours does with the sprocket for the cam at 6:00 and the key for the crank at 12? Sorry if this is a stupid question but like i said, I've never done this before.
Thanks for this video, it helps a ton. I’ve followed your video for guidance. Right now I can’t get the timing cover back on, for the life of me the bolts on the cover to the block just don’t line up completely. I can get like 3 of them, but the rest are too high to meet the block mounting holes. Any idea of what I’m doing wrong? I feel like just draining the oil and dropping the oil pan to put the cover on then reinstall the oil pan.
good video. would you agree that mostly all new timing sets single or double row now have that spacer added onto the backside of the sprocket eliminating the need for the "C" washer/spacer? changing mine out (Ford FE) for a new Melling timing set this week. Thanks for posting.
Nice video! Overall, seems pretty simple to do a camshaft. I’m 18 and I’m soon going to be buying my first vehicle/truck that’s just like this one! Also, I subscribed 👍🏻
That’s exciting!!! Your first project is always a lot of fun and a great learning experience. These old trucks have some quirks and some strange designs, but they are pretty easy to work on overall. Thanks for watching and thanks for the sub… much appreciated! 👍🏻👍🏻
It did look average until I really cleaned out the hole and it sunk in the full 0.280 Without the spacer, there was a chance it would have slipped at some point. Better to be safe than sorry! Thanks for watching Hunter! 👍🏻
You know what… you are 100% correct. I still wasn’t feeling great the day that I installed that seal, and apparently I had a complete brain fart. It’s not leaking at all, but I will indeed have to fix that. (I do have a spare gasket set anyways) I shoulda clued in when the crank sleeve was fighting me 🤦🏼♂️ Thanks for pointing that out, and thanks for watching 👍🏻
***Note that in this video the front cover seal is backwards! Make sure you install yours in the correct direction!*** 👍🏻
I noticed
Changed the timing chain on my 1973 f250. I’ve the manuals, Haynes repair manual, but I could not have done it without this video. Thank you so much.
@@lefthip100 glad it helped you! You are very welcome… thanks for watching 👍🏻👍🏻

Have fun with your project and thanks for watching! 👍🏻👍🏻

That is exactly what I was thinking. I suspect there would be some remnants of the nylon teeth in the oil pan.

@@benbeach4425 bar the engine over one revolution until they line up. You are not on TDC 👍🏻
@whiskeycreekcustoms6296 I had piston one at the top of travel. But that makes sense. It's counter clockwise rotation right?

All the ones I’ve looked at had the spacer built in. The Melling set should as well.
