      Hi derak, is their reason why you decided to do this my 2011 Camry has 120,000 miles. Little rattling noise started a couples months ago, but now it’s got to the point that when engine is hot and I try to turn on the car it takes a couple seconds. I turn the key and it sounds like it’s gonna shut off. I hear the crackling noise then it’s stops. When driving it runs fine no problems at all.

But when I turn engine by hand, yes I turned engine 5-6 times but still chain marked links are matching, did I do something wrong? engine run fine after I put back together but it does through code P0017. Please advice. Thank you very much!!!

    • @Cloyes01
      @Cloyes01  3 роки тому +1

      If you are not removing the phasers there is no need to follow the phaser unlocking/advancing procedure that Toyota recommends. That procedure insures that you don't load the phaser's internal locking pin while torqueing the attachment bolt.

    • @Cloyes01
      @Cloyes01  2 роки тому +1

      If you remove the tensioner cap you will need to remove the tensioner and deactivate it. Upon reinstallation, the valve cover will need to be removed to activate the tensioner against the chain.

    I'm not sure if I'll get a response to this question or not, but I thought I'd try anyway. So you say if the timing cover is off and you replace everything (chain, guides, tensioner, and phashers (vvat-i gears) the phaser/vvt-i gears DO NOT need to be unlocked when installing the new part? So I'm taking that as if you are not removing the chain, just the phaser, that's when it needs to be unlocked for install?

    • @Cloyes01
      @Cloyes01  6 місяців тому

      As long as you hold the camshaft while tightening the phaser bolt, you do not need to unlock the phaser.
      The only way you could damage the phaser is if you tighten the phaser bolt while using the chain or another shaft to keep the phaser from turning. That would put pressure on the internal locking pin.

    Should the bolts be replaced with new torque to yield bolts?

    • @billanderson5774
      @billanderson5774 Рік тому

      The cylinder head bolts are torque to yield, and should be replaced with new bolts, which must be purchased separately (unless a rebuild kit specifically includes those).
      The vvti camshaft phasers also are torque to yield bolts, but new bolts should be included with new gear(s).
      If you are replacing head gasket, I would also recommend replacing the vvti phaser gears.

    HELP!
    Why is it that my intake camshaft will not rest in the 11 o'clock position? It snaps forward to the 12 o'clock or back to the 10 o'clock position.

    • @Cloyes01
      @Cloyes01  3 роки тому +2

      You are experiencing valve spring pressure as one of the valves are open. You can move the cam to either the 10 or 12 o'clock positions and time the engine. Just know that the other camshaft and the crank will also need to move slightly to get the marks aligned. As long as all three marked links are aligned to their respective sprocket marks then the engine is in time.

    Hi, during installation that slack between the phasers is normal? no matter how hard i try i cant element little play.

    • @Cloyes01
      @Cloyes01  Рік тому

      Yes, some slack between the cams is normal. Both camshafts are dealing with valve spring pressures. Sometimes this will cause the cams to want to clock towards each other creating that slack. It really just depends where the engine stops as to what spring forces are against the cams. This can create slack between the cams, or between either camshaft and the crank, and it may shift the next time you turn off the engine.

    • @sonofsteve566
      @sonofsteve566 Рік тому

      @@Cloyes01
      thank you for your response, that slack appears to create the chain to jump teeth, when the crank is turned. I'm guessing chain stretched ?
      or the tensioner is not doing its job.

    • @Cloyes01
      @Cloyes01  Рік тому +2

      @@sonofsteve566 Both are possible if it is a used system. But turning the engine over by hand does greatly increase the chances of the chain jumping because of the violent movements of the camshafts due to the valves opening and closing and no oil pressure going to the tensioner. Even a healthy system can jump time when turning the engine by hand. Rotation with the starter is fast enough that the chain slack doesn't have time to shift back and forth which is what allows it to jump teeth.

      original phasers, is there a concern of them locking when chain was removed did not hold cam when tensioner was removed.

Then remove the RH structural brace that extends from radiator support to (iirc) frame/sub-frame. Once that brace is out of the way, the timing cover can be removed by sliding it out thru the bottom of the car.
