  • In this video, I share my me-made wardrobe from my first year of consistent sewing as a beginner sewist. I share the patterns that I used, the successes and challenges, and techniques I have learned along the way. I also showcase all of my makes with try on clips so you can see what the patterns look like on a moving body. I hope this video inspires you to start sewing your own clothes! It is truly so rewarding.

      Thank you! That is so sweet! I actually decided to start a sewing channel because posting this video has been really inspiring for me too and I've never been part of an online community, but it's been so nice being able to chat with everyone. This channel is about personal growth, insomnia recovery and holistic health...so the sewing video was definitely out of left field. I started another channel it's @kim-stitichable. I'm planning on posting sewing videos there!

      Oh, really? I feel like we are always biased when it comes to our own clothing choices, so thank you for saying that. I think it's that "fake it till you make it" scenario, because it is a super comfortable dress, I just was feeling like it was too gathered. I'm just starting to get into dress wearing so it's out of my comfort zone. I should try one of those dress wearing challenges haha! Thank you for the lovely compliment

      Oh, thank you for saying that! I feel like I'm at confident beginner moving into intermediate...the few intermediate patterns I've tried have been a bit daunting.

      @@KimStitchable if you’re having trouble sewing knits, it may be your needle or the thread that you’re using. When sewing knits it is good to use a ballpoint needle and also sew with a polyester thread, not cotton a cotton thread. I taught sewing at.Stretch and Sew back in the 80s and if you really like sewing knits, you might go online and try to find an old Stretch and Sew Instruction book . If I had one, I’d send it to you, but I got rid of all my sewing books when I downsized. Keep up the good work and I know you’ll find many enjoyable hours sewing for yourself and for your girls.

    For a beginner, you did great. I'm a beginner too and I spend a lot of time unpicking and I have gone through a lot of thread! I have learned a lot and it has helped me understand how to alter items too.

    • @KimStitchable
      @KimStitchable  2 місяці тому +1

      Hi Penny. Thank you! And I too have unpicked my fair share of makes. And a lot of the time I am problem-solving how to fix something after the fact that didn't get the result I was wanting. It's definitely a learning process

    I love how articulate and thorough you are. I think you have a definite style and preference, and it's probably best to be true to that, even though we can say you look great in all the items you made. You're doing a fantastic job with your sewing!

    Great Job! A tip is to sew bias to neckline then press seam towards hem then understitch neckline then press well and seam at neckline should stay towards inside of top then finish sewing bias to top. Look up how to understitch. Hope this helps

    Have you consider painting on the dyed shirts…maybe a Chinese style painting style and using the natural dyes as paint so you can incorporate the dark spots?

    Pj/boxer style shorts as street wear is on trend apparently! I would definitely wear the set for a casual trip out

      Yeah, it definitely falls into the matching sets category, which is definitely trendy right now. Thank you for your input! I feel like i've been out of the fashion mindset for a decade now and am just starting to get into style again, which is fun but confusing at times haha.

    Wear the shorts and matching top together . Tuck the top in shorts and add a tie fabric belt for a jumper. The tops for your girls , sew them each a skirt to wear with the tops. You’re doing a great job sewing.

    I really like how cohesive your makes are because of your color pallet.
    I think it might be fun if you used flower pounding or tie dying on your linen shirts to kind of hide/blend in the stains

    • @KimStitchable
      @KimStitchable  2 місяці тому

      Thank you! That's a great idea, I should try that! Have you done flower pounding before? I'll have to look into the technique. I've tried tie dying but I'm intrigued by the flower pounding...

    I love your elasticated tops. The second one does pouf more; maybe you could just cut off the hem elastic, and topstich a new flat hem. Let it hang, or tuck it in. The rest looks great on you. You are choosing such lovely things to make for yourself, already a distinct style :) Re your gathered dress, lots of people have sewn this style, found it to be too much and then added skinny ties, tied at the back, to pull it in. That made a big difference in the general vibe Sorry more comments, Love the striped set... You can see them through-out the sewing community. Looks great . Great video Thanks

    • @KimStitchable
      @KimStitchable  2 місяці тому +1

      Thank you for your suggestions. Yeah, I tried removing the elastic at the hem on the blue one but it still was sitting kind of funny. I think it's the crinkle cotton fabric...it's not very flowy or drapey so it just holds it's shape in a weird way. And thank you for the tie back suggestion, I hadn't thought of that. I think that my first year of sewing I really fell into all of the sewing trends, so I ended up not loving everything I made, but it gave me so much clarity on the style of clothing I like.
      Thank you for watching!

    The puffy shirt you don't like looks nice at the front but too much fabric at the back I reckon. Id put some darts either side down the middle of the back to take out some fabric from the back. It looks really nice from the front

    On the white dress, the lower ruffle you left out would have weighed down some of the pouf. It looks good but you know your comfort level.

      thank you for that recommendation Angie. I haven't made a tiered dress yet because I haven't felt aligned with the style, but that does make sense. I'm about to make tiered dresses for my daughters so maybe I'll try try that...
