Correct! What a relief that would be now! P.s. this video is from end of 2023, travelling full time makes editing and producing the vids tricky, squeezing it all in, so I am a bit behind. Lots of amazing adventures to come though! :)
To me, as a Romanian, it didn't seem like an entrance ticket to the Turda salt pan (10 euros), would be expensive, but to you, as an Australian, it seemed very expensive!
That is just the entrance fee, then you have to pay extra for every little activity... It is really expensive indeed for me as Romanian, considering there are bigger (and more interesting in my opinion, being in mountainous areas) salt mines in Romania (eg: Slănic Prahova, Ocnele Mari, etc).
Wow, two different Romanian people, having a different idea on the entry price, makes for an interesting conversation. We feel that some of the activities could have been included in the entry price and then maybe pay on top for the special ones - Ferris wheel, boat rowing. 🤔
@@OverlandExposure Well Salina Turda was conceived as a bit of a turist trap place. The prices reflect that. Only bigger turist trap in Romania is 'Dracula's Castle'. So yeah...

Thank you! It was all normal and fine, just felt a bit sketchy without the explanation at the start. Now we (& hopefully we've helped others) know what to expect 😁
No need to worry any more. The check points are now defunct, since Romania and Bulgaria have joined the borderless Schengen Area. No more borders so no more checks.
Thank you very much! Firstly, we needed somewhere out of the Schengen Zone for our 'VISA' time and secondly, we heard Romania was beautiful so we gave it a go. From there we just looked at some nice & recommended places that suited a road trip and to experience a variety of Romania. Plus Google Maps for the win for attractions along the way 😂
@@OverlandExposure That border was almost always busy. But now Romania and Bulgaria are part of the Schengen Area, so no more borders between Hungary and Romania, Romania and Bulgaria and Bulgaria and Greece, which means no more border checks. Massive time saver!
Yes, there is no longer a border between Hungary and Romania, making travel much nicer for everyone. I am not going to comment on the reason why it took so long, the process was much longer than any other customs/border crossing we have ever done (& that is quite a few).
@OverlandExposure Yes, because Romania was not part of the Schengen area and EU rules say that Schengen border controls are mandatory. When Romania was not part of the EU, we stayed at customs for 14 hours. Documents and all luggage were checked by both countries.
Yes I know why there were checks due to the border laws etc, I know it wasn't part of Schengen and now is, I know all of this. What I am saying is, I don't know why it took so long when we have crossed multiple international country borders in our full time travels over the past 2 years, that this was the longest and most nerving. We have never had our passports taken and sent to the side to park etc with no explanations.
You complain that there was no clear process for crossing the border, but the problem is that you don't understand the process. Plus, you're causing yourself unnecessary panic. Customs officers are not required to learn your language and your accent. You need to know the laws and have all the paperwork ready.
We do know the process, we have been to 15+ border crossings in two years, this is the only one they needed car paperwork and have ever taken documents away from the window and asked us to drive to park elsewhere. Everywhere else in the world does everything at the window you drive up to, unless something is wrong. I don't expect anyone to learn my language or accent, that is impossible, maybe some signage explaining the very unusual process wouldn't hurt.
@@OverlandExposure No, you don't and you are very arrogant. Before crossing a border you should inform yourself about the documents you need to have. You are not European citizens. You did not have the car documents ready. Maybe they should have taken you out of the car and checked the car if you were not carrying drugs or weapons. The fact that you have kangaroos in Australia does not make it superior to other nations.😂😂😂
Not arrogant at all, just stating the facts of our experiences & comparisons, which for some reason people have an issue with. We had the documents required and were actually following the instructions of the hire car company, which was to leave them in our bags and not the car, so I had to get them from our bags. That took about 1 minute, and that was while at the window. 🤷♀️ Put it in this way, pointless conversation now there is no border check anyway!
That salt mine is something completely different to anything I’ve seen before 👏🏻
For us too! & still over a year later we are yet to see anything similar...
That’s a whole new world down there 😮
It was amazing!
Well as of 1st of January, 2025 there's no more border guards, as Romania and Bulgaria joined the Schengen area.

That is interesting that you think that. It was one of the more expensive attractions we did in Romania which is why we made that statement.

Great episode, but don't know how I'd go with the guards at the check point taking your identification
