    I purchased a Marcum LX-6 and love it. A lot of money but worth every penny. I've fished with Humminbird 35 and 45 ice models before but they don't compare to the Marcum. Can't wait to use it again here pretty soon.

    I went with the Ice 35 last season after a great deal of research. I have no doubt that I made a good decision. Another thing to look at is the size of the display on the Ice 35. The Vexlor is smaller and you have to buy a lens to increase the display.

    Great video. My dad and i have shared an older model Vexilar FL-8 for years and i have been looking at getting another flasher for a while now. I did my research and came up with the same conclusion as you. Your video really pointed out the important features of all the flashers. I look forward to using my Humminbird ice 35 in a couple week when the ice freezes. Thanks again for the great video!

      Great to hear from you Nic, I'm glad you enjoyed the video. Good luck on the ice this year and let me know how you like your flasher when you get a chance to use it! Thanks for watching.

    The Vexilar units do fit in a 5 Gal bucket. The Vexilar Ice pack is black, round, has a battery indicator and is designed to fit in a bucket. I know because I have the Fl8 ice pack. What you are showing here for Vexilar is the Genz Pack, the blue square case. I don't see many Genz packs on the Ice. I am not sure why anyone would buy that one over the Ice pack, perhaps there is some storage.

    I'll take my FL-18 over the Humminturd, just on sensitivity, and reliability.

    I don't trust manufacturer specs. I trust anecdotal evidence and sounds to me from all the vids I've watched vexilar is much better.

    Good choice, I own both and they both do the job, however in bright light conditions the brightness of the vex is easier on the eyes.

    Great analysis Ty! I'm not an ice fisherman but a lot of my friends are. They all seem to go with the Vexilar models, probably for the name in the market more than anything. The Humminbird looks like the right pick to me.

      Just took it out on Tuesday in fact. So far, I'm pleased with my purchase. I was only fishing in about 8 feet of water, so I didn't actually use the zoom, but everything else worked as hoped for. Thanks for watching!

    • @Mrscottyboy4
      @Mrscottyboy4 7 років тому

      So looking at the dial you would really only use zoom after 18 feet of water right? Did you fish scofield? Were you able to tell the chubs from the trout? Was wondering if the color would be different for smaller or weaker signals. I'm waiting for ice on the berry last night was super cold. Now we have these clouds that will keep it a little warmer the next little bit . Let's go you can show me in person. :)

    • @the-mountainlife
      @the-mountainlife  7 років тому +1

      You can use the zoom in any depth over about 8-10 feet. How the zoom actually works is it takes a portion of the circular display and does a 2x magnification on it. So you can't really say that it magnifies a set number of feet per say (i.e. with the marcum it will magnify the bottom 5 feet always). The only way I could tell the chubs from the trout is that the chub would show up on the screen and watch the bait a lot longer than the trout would. It seemed like if a fish showed up on the screen and immediately hit, there was a really good chance it was a trout. Good luck on the Berry, let me know how you do. I would be happy to go, but I actually graduate from PT school this weekend, so it's crazy busy right now! Good luck!

    Where do you live/fish? Just curious because those lakers looked very pale and silver and similar to some here on the Kenai Peninsula that are caught in very silty lakes such as Tustumena and Kenai Lake. Thanks for the video, very informative. I just purchased the Humminbird and am looking forward to getting out and using it.

    You missed interference issues. Vexilar wins in interference if you fish next to someone with a vex your unit is rendered useless

    • @the-mountainlife
      @the-mountainlife  6 років тому

      I didn't mention this in the video, and I should have, thanks for bringing it up. With the Humminbird units, you can adjust the frequency to tune out interference from other units, and you have a fair amount of adjustment with it. Thanks for the comment.

      Fl 8se blows the 35 away, not being bias, better electronics in the vexilar. Better light and you don’t need a battery indicator ever. You better keep the battery on either charged fully. If you went with the 18 it will blow, I repeat blow the Humminbird out of the water.

    Hey Ty,
    I have the Humminbird Ice 35, I was able to get out in, I believe, February and it works pretty well. My only complaint I would have is that I experienced something I wasn't expecting... a weak signal strength at depth. I feel as though the transducer on the Humminbird loses strength the deeper you get in the water, causing you to have to tweak the settings in order to see your jig in deeper water. It would start out seeing it just fine, but as I got deeper the signal would disappear... I have used a Vexilar before and didn't have this issue, I don't know about the Marcum's.
    If you don't experience this same issue let me know, I would like to know if it maybe a problem with the unit that I have.

    • @the-mountainlife
      @the-mountainlife  8 років тому

      Hey Travis, thanks for watching, and thanks for the info. Roughly how deep were you fishing when you started to notice the issue?

    • @3fghost
      @3fghost 8 років тому

      We were only fishing in about 13 feet of water... I would start to notice the signal return get weaker at about 5 to 6 feet, and then have to readjust the settings at about 9 to 10 feet so I could still see the jig on the flasher.

    • @the-mountainlife
      @the-mountainlife  8 років тому

      Well that makes me a little nervous, hopefully I don't have similar issues. What was your first indication that the signal was getting weaker? Was it just that you couldn't see your jig on the flasher as you went deeper, or did you notice other things as well? I will keep you posted Travis.

      dont use long skinny jigs.. think sonar safe jigs. fat and wide glitter always helps

      I've got the same dam issue. A lot of times I have to have my gain button at least on 40 in order to see my damn jig. My son has a Vexilar fl-8, and he has his gain on about 5 and can always see his jig. Frustrating as hell, but otherwise I really like the hummingbird 45

    • @the-mountainlife
      @the-mountainlife  8 років тому

      Hello Mark. I did look at the Marcum, but it was more expensive and only afforded a 19 degree transducer angle (I think). And that's where my research stopped. Let me know what you find out though. Thanks for watching.

    I just bought the lowrance elite 4 chirp ice machine for $205 from hodgesmarine.com which will be a nice upgrade from my humminbird fishing buddy that I had to clamp to the side of a bucket or bring my board with the hole drilled in the center to hold it in the hole! we're you set on getting a flasher unit over a traditional fishfinder with the ice kit/transducer? I've never fished with an actual flasher although the lowrance I got can display the flasher circle. It seems like the other units have so many more adjustments and features (like fish alarm for when you don't have your eyes on the screen!)

    • @the-mountainlife
      @the-mountainlife  8 років тому

      Thanks for the comment shawn. I really can't compare flashers to fish finders/flasher combos as I haven't had much experience with them, or researched them. I chose a flasher just because it seemed like the more conventional way to go for ice fishing (I know that's not a good reason). But that's where my research led me as I simply wanted something to up my odds this season. Perhaps had I researched this more I may have ended up with a finder/flasher combo. Good luck this winter!

      THE MOUNTAINLIFE that would be great. I'm still new to flashers and your previous video sold me on the hummingbird. a more in-depth video would be great if you have the chance to make one. I watched some on your videos last ice season and this season you just gained a new sub.thanks again

      Beef Supreme it's not that the FL 8 itself doesn't fit. It's just the blue Genz Pack mount that doesn't. It's meant to sit on top of a round bucket. If you wanted to fit inside of a round bucket you get the pro series mount instead.
