  • From www.crosstraini... Two quick practice laps of a private motocross track riding in soft sand with two talented young Tasmanian riders, Hugh Mckay and Sophie Coldicutt. It might look easy compared to a lot of tracks as the jumps are flat and low, but the loose sandy soil can be tricky for the faint of heart - ask me how I know!

    Although Sophie is racing in enduro events with her YZ250X, she comes from a motocross background and knows all about keeping the throttle on and riding aggressively in sandy terrain. If you are serious about learning advanced riding techniques, it is definitely worth thinking about getting a Trials bike and joining a local club. It's a highly addictive form of Moto sport! Many of us ride slower and back off the throttle because the wheels get thrown around and that front responds slowly to handlebar movements. But similar to a boat planing on top of the water, a dirt bike will ride on top of the sand with speed and actually become more stable. Sophie said it seems counter intuitive but sand riding is easier as you pick up more speed, and her motocross background makes it much easier to stay on the throttle.
    She also said it's important not to fight the bike as ruts in the sand will temporarily steer the bike in another direction, but relaxing and staying on the throttle will see the bike take your preferred line... eventually! This takes a fair bit of nerve as beginners will constantly think they are going to crash then when they back off the throttle the front wheel sinks and their chances of dropping the bike increase substantially. You can see both Hugh and Sophie are on the throttle as their bikes land from jumps so the front end is kept light and will not be affected by ruts in the sand too much.
    Hugh said body positioning is very important when cornering in sandy terrain. Usually you slide ride up to the front of the seat riding in soft sand to weight the front wheel for traction, but in sand this increases the chance of the front wheel sinking into the sand so you normally need a mid position on the seat, then slide to the rear at the exit to keep the front wheel light when accelerating.
    I tried a few laps of this track later and it was so embarrasingly slow I didn't bother filming it. Watching experienced riders is great fun but also deflating for the gumby ego lol! Thanks for the sand riding tips, Sophie and Hugh!
    Many of us are drawn to Dirt riding by the power, speed and thrills of riding a modern Enduro bike, so it goes without saying that power slides, big air and wheelies are big draw cards. Look at some of the best extreme Enduro riders in action like Graham Jarvis, Jonny Walker, Chris Birch and Taddy Blazusiak. Cross training is the application of Trials-based skills to Dirt riding, and it's got solid backing from the world's top riders:
    Initially, cross training slows you right down (even to a stand still!) so that you can relearn key Dirt Riding skills then gradually build up your speed again. Most Trials techniques involve precise use of the clutch, such as feathering the clutch for traction control up hills or dropping the clutch to launch the bike into the air. Cross training applies the same principles to Enduro bike - you'll be amazed at the difference it makes riding in soft sand. Transfer the skill to your Enduro bike. Music: www.purple-pla...

    I ride sand often and the tip about keeping the body in the middle makes sense. I constantly fall over because rear slides over the berm or the front gets stuck. But on corner exit I always move back to keep the front above sand. Also suspension settings are way different for soft sand than woods riding. Definitely will use these tips on the next sand ride. (:

    Spot on video! I used to ride a lot in soft sand and I must say that is the correct way to drive on it. Keep on the throttle, so the bike doesn't wobble so much and REALLY try to have some speed, since it makes the bike more stable. Body positioning can also help alot to avoid the front sinking in the sand and reduce wobble.
    For someone driving a low powered trail bike (around 20 HP and 120 kg) with a heavy front in soft sand (like me), you'll depend more on the speed and body position to correct it. Throttle will just be a consequence of those two and will also help, but not as much since you can't get as much lift on the front wheel.
    Of course... depending on speed requires some "balls"... but is a lot of fun... and riden correctly, even old/worse bikes can pack a surprise in some conditions. ;)

    Great advice. I was riding in loos sand earlier today. It didnt work out at first. Then i just stopped to watch more experienced riders how they do it. I saw they were leaning far back on the bike. So i tried and it went a lot better! Still had some traction issues for slow cornering. It was probably because i sat far forward on the seat, which i thought was good. Next time i will try mid-seat like you said in the video for slow corners and more throttle on the straight bumps! Thx! :)

    I love the sand, I grew up riding in it in Florida. If you catch any of the US Supercross on tv, they usually add a sand section and it's surprising how many pro riders get fouled up in the sand. To me, sand is just mud without the water. What I mean is, you use the same riding skills as mud.

      As we don’t have any tracks in a radius of over 200 km ( I can’t express how much I love sliding around in this sandy dirt ) me and some of my friends went to the woods with handsaws and a folding shovel and started cleaning a track. As we are teenagers and the woods aren’t our property we were stuck with the small space between the pines. As the track got deeper and the speeds higher, you could lean lower but with a great risk of hitting your head on trees at the inside of the corner. This pretty much was how the top speed was limited😂
      I don’t really know if I was riding technically correct, especially the breaking part. I just locked up the rear brake and got sideways before going full throttle. Mind you that the corners where you needed to brake were at least 90 degrees.
      Greetings from Germany

    I don't know how you do it. I used the 'keep on the throttle' approach yesterday through the ruts and ended up in a heap on the floor with a dead leg. No idea what hit me but it's still hurting tonight. Can't wait to get back out on the trail.

    Excellent vid! Now I just need some gonads to do it at THAT speed :D
    Personally, I don't want to race -- I'm happy at a nice, steady, sedate speed. But would you say that this is generally true for other types of heavier bikes: mini-Adventure bikes, Bush Pigs, Big bikes, etc? and at "less than race speed"? I guess we all need to try it out for ourselves...and grow a pair while we're at it.
    I hope you make some more vids that give top tips about different terrain: (Bull dust, Dry clay, Wet clay, hot lava floes, how to surf tsunamis, etc

    I love to hate that soft sand. I've only been riding for 8 months (and on a KLR 650 to boot,) and I'm still pulling seat cover vinyl out of my rear from pucker moments in soft sand. It's such an unnatural habit to stay on the throttle when things get wobbly, when everything is telling you to slow down.

    • @MtlDeath
      @MtlDeath 5 років тому

      faster ya go, less wobbly it gets..

    so basically start on a 250 4 stroke or 125/200 2 stroke and keep the gas on basically all the time instead of trying to start on a 450 4 stroke or 300 2 stroke crapping yourself as soon as you get over idle and shutting the gas in panic everywhere.

    "staying on the throttle keeps you in control" (paraphrased) that's all very well, but at some point you're gonna need to slow down for something eventually - and then what!? :-)

    • @systemofadumb1
      @systemofadumb1 7 років тому +1

      there is a certain speed you can stay on top of the sand and still have control going around the corners, as long as you stay in the rut or on the good line this is achievable.

    • @TheXtremeSS
      @TheXtremeSS 7 років тому +1

      Well... when you need to corner for example, you can lift the throttle, maybe some really light braking (so the front doesn't sink in too much). I used to stand up slightly and medium to backwards position during braking (helped in my case because of a heavy front bike). During middle and exit of corner, sit in the middle and maybe middle/back during the exit. Try to carry some speed, so the bike doesn't wobble so much during the middle and exit of the corner. ;)
      Edit: Another thing... use and abuse the ruts. XD
