The vowel order is the order for romaji in Japanese script. I wondered about why she didn’t type as she wrote, too, but I wonder how kanji translates into typing. I agree that the uncertainty about the Inui’s survival made the whole scene better. “I wish they would hurry up.” This does seem out of place. You can never know the ultimate reason. I have no idea how I think the story will end. I guess I will have to see.
Thanks for the note on the vowels. Eastern languages translated to English really emphasizes cultural differences beyond theme. This is the first time I've seen it, and it does add some interest for sure. Looking forward to seeing how this wraps up!
The "I wish they would hurry up". I gathered was conversation between other passengers. To me it seemed it's the narrator listening to other conversations around her as it's immediately followed by 'The whispered conversations stopped, and the travellers fell silent whenever the memory police passed by'. But it is hard to tell. That was my first thought.
