I grew up with Peanuts, and I'll always remember Snoopy, The WWI Flying Ace in his Sopwith Camel, shaking his fist and yelling, "Curse you, Red Baron!"
The Dr.I had a rotary engine, not a radial. In a rotary, the crankshaft is fixed while the rest of the engine, with the propeller attached, rotated around it.
I hope Meng takes over all the Wingnut kits so we can see them again!
it's nowhere near a WnW kit, it's meng, and a poor comparison to WnW

@@mark110101 That's a little far imho, the instructions aren't as good for sure as they also lack rigging instruction, but the kit moulding is WNW quality, barring the argument it was a little rushed due to the breakages and wing warping, both of which are easy fixes. There is a good build in progress on the ww1 aircraft models forum which provides decent details.
Mark it’s the same kit that WnW was showing test shots of before they shut down. WnW did not make the tooling for any of their kits. They did the design work and sent it off to a third party to cut the molds. Meng was one of several companies that produced molds for WnW.
Unlikely. Meng was one of several companies that created molds for WnW. The molds for all the released kits are owned by WnW so those kits can only be re-released if they sell them. It’s not clear what the status of the Lancaster, O/100, and O/400 molds is. These were nearly ready to be released.
Build it in the iconic 'Red Baron' format. It would be criminal not to!!!
I have the kit. It is amazing. The texture of the doped canvas and stitching is excellent. The instruction are so good you don't really need to buy reference material. I hope Meng does more WW1 aircraft. I like the Black Jacobes plane.
I picked up one of those t-shirts and it looks just as good in person as it does on screen. Now I need the kit to complete the ensemble.
Great video as usual. Thanks to the review. For a perfect cylinder to bend the p.e., maybe use the barrel of the plastic gun supplied. Should be a great fit.

That is one cool looking Fokker.
The limited edition version's resin bust is fantastic quality I should say! And together with the kit itself it should make a really good talking point in any display cabinet. Lovely kit. My 2nd Meng kit and again the plastic is great quality. Companies like Airfix, Italeri and Revell could learn a thing or two.
Great to see a WW 1 airplane. They have much more character than modern jet planes. Also I like the idea that they were often just made out of wood and canvas. The pilots were very brave flying these early planes... Hope you are going to paint it in the Red Barons colours.

Strikes are also happening at the Montreal container port where most of the cargo ships from China end up. They go through the Panama Canal,up the Eastern Sea Board, go past New York and Halifax, through the St.Lawerence,and end up sitting on the docks in Montreal.
Covid has definitely changed the world...we're back to waiting for the "slow boat from China"...
But enough of that...the kit looks great. I've never done a WW1 planned before,but this one I would definitely give a shot...thanks for the review Andy...maybe we'll see a build video soon of this kit?
Looks like a nice kit and will be very interested in your build review when it's done.
The Red Baron is an Icon, and as such the scheme will probably get done to death, so I'd personally prefer to see something else instead or alternatively build two and start your own Jasta!

...in the 60s myself and two brothers had the Revell (bastard 1/28th Scale) DR1, SPAD & Sopwith Camel...thy DR1 was released in two versions...von Richtofen's & Werner Voss' aircraft...
I had an issue with the wings of mine being quite warped. Took a bit of work to get them straightened out.

Andy I would choose to do one on the other JG1 Tridekkers. Lothar Richtoven, Manfreds brother was also an ace in that unit as was Herman Goring. If I recall correctly Manfred's plane wasn't completely Red painted at the beginning, which makes it an interesting series of possible painting styles as he moved from the factory schema to his all red version. I think quite a lot of other bright colours and patterns was used by other pilots.
I think the Rad Baron’s markings will look the best, great video!

I've only made one Meng kit which was a fairly old one and although the detailing was very good I found their Styrene to be incredibly soft compared to say Tamiya, so I had to be really careful sanding small parts.
I'm buying this kit today! Has to be better than that Meng "parts kit" King Tiger I have.
Face it, we as modelers seek German aircraft and armor for no other reason than the colorful and creative camouflage choices we have.
The DR1 is not left out. Your choices of different colors are almost endless. Check out Ltn. Lothar von Richthofen, Jasta 11, May 1918!!
Of the four choices in this kit, I am going for Voss's ride.

Hard to pass up a MvR scheme, though I know when I build mine it will be in DR.I 477/17 markers rather than his more famous 425/17, it allows the fokker camo and still a decent amount of red. The voss decals are very inaccurate so check your references if you choose that.

I hope you do the Red Baron paint job, only because that’s the one I’m hoping to do if I buy the kit. I’d like to see how you do it.
While I would like to see how you take on the streaking effect on the plane, I think the all red plane will be more recognizable by a lot more people. When WNW showed the kits at the IPMS Nationals last year I thought that they would release an F.1 and a Dr.1 separately, but I like the kits as released by Meng just fine.
@Andy, for the Machine-Gun, just roll the PE around the finished Gun, so you have the size, then take it off and put it onto the gun that requires PE. the front part should now match.

Sent 4 A4 sheets of paper, in an A4 envelope from AU to US, the cost $36 AUD not sure, but me thinks that's called 'extortion', international shipping IMO was ridiculous prior to the plandemic, now they're simply taking the piss, as we say here in Straya!

Manfred von Richthofens paint scheme will be most popular but it would be nice to see some other flying circus members planes
Go with the Baron scheme, sounds like you want that anyway :). I heard there might be a mistake on the Voss scheme with the cowling, so if you get new decals in for the kit that could be an excuse to build another one. Also, WNW website still has the hints and tips section up which gives advice on folding those barrel PE pieces.

Definitely build the Red Baron version.
MvR flew numerous Tripes... starting with Fokker F.1 102/17 in which he got his 60th and 61st kills. He crashed in Fok. Dr.I 114/17 when the engine threw a piston cylinder which knocked the cowling off. 127/17 which was the first of his tripes known to have had more red added over and above the red struts, cowling and wheel covers that were standard for Jasta 11. 152/17 has been known to have a progression of red painted from the upper wing and tail to overall red. 161/17 (cowling, struts, upper wing and tail up to the forward edge of the fuselage cross and the fuselage top to the rear of the cockpit), 425/17 which was the aircraft he was flying when he was killed and 477/17 which was one of his spares and has been claimed in everything from normal factory streaked green to overall red.

Are the machine guns slide molded? I didn't catch that in the video, but perhaps I just missed it.
My choice of painting would be for option 'D' in the instruction guide.
Always liked Werner Voss' markings or 'Fritz' Kempf. (Simply over the whole "Red" thing)

There were many red paint variations to the Baron's triplane. Try one that is not all red.

The Red Baron needs to be done . The etch sheets are covered in plastic film because there are no sprues . Looking forward to the build.

I believe ICM make a 1/16th scale figure of the 'Red Baron' himself which could make a nice complimentary kit to go with this model.
Mine came with the broken part B6 as well. Going to be a tough fix. Unlike your shop the one I purchased it from has completely ignored my complaint. Anyway, I will be doing the Barons Red because Its iconic and I don't have skills to pull off the crazy streaking on the others. HAHA.

@@ralhmcc47 Its the middle wing that attaches to the fuselage. The part that broke off is the exact piece Andy showed. Mine kind of tore a bit. Won't ruin the build, depending on the fit, it may just need a little glue and putty.

I have the Wingnut Wings Sopwith Camel in my stash. I have been waiting for years to bring out a Fokker Dr 1 as a display partner. It's a shame they had to go under before this kit came out.
I recently bought this very model, with the regulation busted cockpit surround. But Meng were very good about sending a replacement, which I received today, which was not broken.

Hi from NZ, After a bit of digging, Meng have the tooling for this kit and one other Wingnut's kit. No idea what that one is sorry. The kit is a bit like a Chinese copy (legal here from what I know) that is commonly seen. The instructions highlight that being not a bit like the old Wingnuts quality. As far as I know there is yet to be a deal on the tooling for the other Wingnuts kits but given what is currently happening at Weta Workshops and Peter Jacksons other business interests here ATM I don't expect that Wingnuts tooling is a priority at the moment. Hopefully when the dust settles there will be a deal to sell the tooling to another company to keep the kits on the market.

I vote for "other than the Red Baron". However if you do the Red Baron paint, you will have to choose which of his DR-1s to do. No 3 I believe is the one he scored most of his victories in. No 4 he died in. I choose "Other" because EVERYBODY does the Red Baron.

Hi Andy, I live in Halifax and while your container is very likely here there's no strike going on. The strike is in Montreal and a lot of that traffic is getting diverted to Halifax. Hope you get it soon!

I live near Yarmouth, and I was going to say I'd heard nothing about strikes in Halifax. Packages certainly aren't getting around any faster, that's for sure, the date estimates on ebay are now just suggestions.

B-T-W that’s a rotary type engine, (Cylinders and crankcase rotate) while a Radial type engine has the (conventional) fixed cylinder/crankcase with a rotating crankshaft arrangement.

There are 2 sides of sticky tape on the PC so you remove one side of tape then you pull off the part you want without cutting, no sanding. the rest of the PC will stay stuck to the tape Ralph

Expected to see the other colour schemes at the end of the instructions but you stopped as soon as you got to the red scheme. Are the others not covered in the instructions?
All four schemes are covered in color on pages 12 through 19 of the instructions. I preordered mine through Andy and it arrived last week.

For me the red baron, who fought like a Knight and with old-style rules no killing parachutes and he would rather fight a new battle again instead off shooting till the plane exploded!
has to be The Red Barron Manfred von Richthofen was such a iconic figure/warrior who was respected on both sides of the war ... very rarely does that happen
Hermann Goering was also a very skillful and respected pilot in WW1... Early aerial combat was almost 'gentlemanly', whereas ground war was always hell. People tend only to remember Goering as the obese, belligerent, ostentatious buffoon he became as Commander of the Luftwaffe.

Is it a flare pistol, or a starter pistol? Some early aircraft engines used a percussion cap starter system, rather than a manual propeller start.
I'm not an aircraft modeller BUT if Wingnut had ever done the Albatross DV.b, I'd ha d snapped one up. Have seen a real one at a museum, and it is the most beautiful aircraft ever - in lacquered wood / lozenge camo and jasta 16 markings.

@@ralhmcc47 Lothar flew 454/17... The plane was painted in streaked Fokker Green with red cowling, struts and wheel covers. The top wing was Yellow, as was the tail from the forward edge of the fuselage cross to the rudder.

If you're talking MvR and Werner Voss in the same time frame, then you'll need to do Fok. F.1 102/17 (MvR) and Fok. F.1 103/17(Voss). These were the two pre-production prototypes that were issued to Jasta 10 (Voss) and Jasta 11 (MvR) Both planes were in Factory livery, Streaked Fokker Green over light blue. The Fokker F.1 has smaller ailerons and also had a curved leading edge on the horizontal stabilizers.

Definitely Red Baron, I think it's illegal to paint it any other way. Really hoping that Meng bought all the rights from WNW though, would love to see the brand come back. Desperately hoping they produce the upcoming Lancaster and Halifax as well.
