  • The NextGen car has produced some incredible racing at tracks like Kansas, Charlotte, and Atlanta, but has struggled at short tracks and road courses. Kevin Harvick understands the nuances of what it takes to change the car as a whole, but simply put, he feels the cars should have more horsepower. Watch his take on the video.

    I remember those just absolutely insane 1000 horsepower monsters that used to scream around the tracks. I don't know if we should push them that hard again, but imagine one of these next gen cars with 850-875 horsepower thundering off into the corner at Kansas or screaming down into 3 and 4 at Martinsville making the tires absolutely question why they were ever created as they gripped into the track with whatever they could muster. That could potentially get us back to the old "twisted sister" days with the added saftey of today. That could make for some absolutely incredible racing.

    • @RyTrapp0
      @RyTrapp0 11 місяців тому

      @@VladimirBlarp Adding horsepower doesn't fix the problems caused by having too much tire. All of this tire(they made them nearly 1.5" wider than the old 15s, even though they pulled a ton of HP out of them) is the reason why switching to a softer compound doesn't make them fall off sooner - they're SO damn big, they have SO damn much thermal mass that they can't overheat them to make them fall off. Horsepower may help wear out the rears sooner... but these are also professional race cars drivers with real throttle control, so I wouldn't go banking on a drastic difference in rear tire wear just because you may assume that they're going to being doing burnouts out of every corner. Still aren't going to wear out the fronts either of course.
      They could ballast the cars up to 4000lbs to put more heat into those 14.3" worth of tire at each corner, but I don't believe anyone really thinks that's a good idea. Maybe take a ton of aero away(like seems to be popular), but that's pretty sketchy to rely so heavily on pure mechanical grip on the high speed ovals. It's lot harder to recover a push up truck without downforce on the nose; it's a lot harder to recover a slide mid-corner without rear downforce - would likely be more cars into the wall, which no one wants.
      It'll be a painful switch for everyone involved - but they just need to rip the band-aid off sooner than later, because there aren't any shortcuts to fixing having too much tire. More horsepower is probably needed(unless they took like 3" of tire away or something drastic that actually paired with their HP target) too, but it isn't fixing the problems caused by the tire.

      You don't want hard tires. Hard tires allow for consistent lap times throughout a run with Iittle to no wear which keeps the cars all running the same rough lap times and makes for follow the leader. You want a softer tire that starts fast and falls off hard, with high HP so that its put in the drivers hands to save their stuff. This will lead to a bigger lap time variance which equals passing.

And with Kevin retiring, I doubt I’ll watch a single race next year unless the Steve and Steve show get their fingers out of their asses and start listening. Their sole focus has been trying to find ways to bunch these cars up at the expense of driver talent input. Obviously, looking at the tv ratings, I’m not the only one that feels that way.

Overall, I appreciate the open to change of upper echelon NASCAR folks today. The era of putting a lid on it under Brian was non-productive and becoming a thing of the past. While they seem to point at cost within the P&L of equipment for teams and manufacturers, for some reason they don't look at P&L from a fan, viewer or driver perspective (IMHO). Where the "P" tips the balance. Odd. They want to keep this package appealing to other manufacturers (My #1 guess here is Honda) they also need to keep the package a marketable product. Crazy balance and transition for the sport.

    I got heated when I found out they were dropping the horsepower to 750 from 900+, I got frustrated when it STAYED that way, and I got out when they dropped it again to 550. The joy of full-on NASCAR Cup cars USED to be that they were a complete handful. Now they make less power than a Mustang GT with headers and a tune, and it's made them predictable.
    The cars are tight because they can't spin up the rears as easily to correct the balance. They're aero-dependent because they don't have the power to make throttle control a relevant skill on corner exit. The tires aren't wearing out because they're under less stress in general.
    Here's an easy fix to a problem NASCAR themselves caused by not heeding the results of the DIRECT COMPARISON they made during the 2015 season: TAKE THE DAMN PLATES OFF.

It needs to go back to how it was in the early days where driver's had to fight to race an ill handling car. Driver's need to be able to pass and not stay bunched together. I personally wish they would do away with the stage racing. I don't know of but one driver that might be able to race a straight 400-600 miles/laps that's racing now. I'm not a big fan of his but he would be up to the challenge. There's 3 tracks specifically I would love to see how the driver's would hold up going from start to finish and have to strategically decide when to pit and race non-stop flag to flag. That's Bristol, Charlotte and Darlington. North Wilkesboro would be great too.

      @@drewhalloran9 First off, the way the industry is going, the best thing NASCAR can do is kill off the Cup Series that costs $50 mil a year to run in it's current form, and do a consolidation. Second, Make it the Xfinity Cup Series with a budget cap of $12mil because that's what top teams are currently spending... THAT will reign in costs, allow for one company to sponsor a car all year long which helps build brand identity, and as good as the racing is in Xfinity, don't change ANYTHING about the cars. I mean they're already 700hp which is more than the Cup cars currently are, and you're not making them spend more on engines... then do the full points format and fix the numbers and you've got something worth paying attention to...

    I'm not sure why I don't hear more about adjusting the size of the tire as the fix. In moving to the Next Gen tire, the width increased enough that it was almost equivalent to adding a 5th tire to the car. Taking the width back to the previous width would slow the mid corner speeds in a similar way to adding HP. I'm sure the crew chiefs would also like to see the wheel size maybe come down to 17in, as it would give a little spring rate back to the tire and allow for a little more adjustability. Just my thoughts.

Science LESS grip will make the Cars slower& harder to drive. That's what Fans& NASCAR want. A car That blows the Tires off if Ya can't control the HP you Have with the Go pedal

    Nascar started the 550 package in 2018-2019 to accommodate the awful talent that was coming to cup because of money. Adding HP will further show that the best drivers in North America are not racing in cup.
    As long as drivers are buying their way into cup, they’ll never increase HP

  • @killacam197.
    @killacam197. 11 місяців тому

    Its rare to hear a driver say something is too easy to drive. NASCAR managed to build a car that drives better than its predecessor, and behaves differently because you don't have to tune around built in inefficiency. teams clearly wanted more power even from early testing because the cars could handle it.
    I think the delay in giving this HP comes from the fact that if you give an inch, teams will take a mile. once that extra HP comes there is no telling how quick and potentially dangerous the cars can get on any given track.

    Kevin made some great points, but heres something we also need to talk about... The lower series cars have more power than the cup series. There's not a single racing organization on the world where you go up in tier, and down in power except NASCAR. Kids at 15 years old in ARCA have more powerful race cars than the "best of the best" in the cup series and that is an absolute JOKE.

    Next gen. Big tech. Analytics. Computerized this and that....screw all that stuff. Give me back carbs, more air, and horsepower. We don't want a reinvented IROC series. Racing was never better than it was in the 80's and 90's...and not just because the Intimidator was on the track. The only thing better today IMO is the safety of the cars and the Chase format. I was against the Chase format for a while but have come around on that. But the racing itself, the speeds, adjustability, "gray areas", etc, made the racing so fun back then. And the driver personalities were better too. You had real feuds, bad blood, and drivers who spoke their mind, not the PC "hope I'm as fast as Xfinity 10G" corporate robot lines. BTW, Xfinity sucks as does their service, which is some call center in the Indo Pacific.
