Larry McReynolds Reunites with King Racing: Inside Kenny Bernstein's Former NASCAR Shop!
Вставка
- Опубліковано 6 лют 2025
- Before Larry McReynolds was the crew chief at Robert Yates Racing he proved his skills leading the team for legendary drag racer Kenny Bernstein's NASCAR team. King Racing originated in South Carolina and moved to THIS building for the 1989 season! 35+ years later the place has not changed very much and Larry has not been back inside since 1991! We go inside with him to hear about how the place worked, stories about working with Ricky Rudd, Brett Bodine, and some funny things that happened back in the day!

Race cars end up in museums and the buildings they came from are often forgotten. I’m glad we are able to digitally document these places for future generations to see. I also feel like there is something special about hearing stories where they happened. What do you think?
Stapletonautoworks.com
Well the buildings are an essential part of the story, since obviously without a shop, it becomes much more difficult to do everything to get the cars together in order to get those cars to the track.
Prayers for your Grandma 🙏
Absolutely!! Those buildings are a huge part of history. Particularly love seeing all those ones still being used and how. I enjoy those interviews with those buildings current owners also, and how they come about acquiring those. I think that's just as cool. Again why you're one of my favorite channels.
Thank for all your hard work putting together a great interview. Hope all goes well with your family. Can’t wait for your next interview!!
I think you and Logan are awesome for doing this because I can’t and I want to so bad. The way you video it, it’s like I’m there though. Y’all are blessed to meet and hang with all my Winston Cup racing hero’s!! Thank You!!
Larry is such a nice guy, I met him at a Charlotte race he was working for Yates. At a gas station he was driving an S10 pickup and we razzed him over it. He got a big kick out of us and talked to us for about 15min he didn't have to do that but he did.
He’s a super cool dude
You will have that with the old timers lot of these younger folks let the fame go to the head and become to good for regular folks to just talk to
If I had to hire a President of Operations for a NASCAR Cup level organization it would be hands down Larry McReynolds... Keep the hammer down, wind at your back, and the sun upon face Killer Stapleton 42. God bless. Sincerely, Nathan W Mangouranen of Franklin, NH
I worked for him and Robert and they were amazing people. Brilliant and kind. And fun.
He was THIS close to winning it all with Davey in 1992.
People forget that.
Yeah, despite Davey’s injuries. Davey was a hell of a driver. I wish he were still around.
And what’s crazy is the guy that took out Allison @ Atlanta would be the one to take over the 28 car. I would love to hear Larry Mac’s conversations w/R Yates about putting “Swerving Ervin” in the 28 car….it would be amazing interview IMO
Up until the 4 car took him out.
I haven't. How different racing history would be if we didn't lose Davie Allison...
Jeff Gordon would have had a couple less championships, Davey Allison would have won a couple of those during that time period. Nothing against Gordon though, Davey was on a top team.
You have to take Larry to RCR in Welcome NC, And walk around the museum with him and Chocolate Meyers!
Could listen to Larry Mac forever. The knowledge, experience and the stories he has are second to none. He's definitely America's crew chief.
Y’all are killing it, keep it up. You just got racing royalty in his old uniform. Larry is a class act and the fans love him.
larry was a treasure trove of information that he has shared over the years !!!!
Condolences to you and your family. What a blessing to have her around into your adulthood. I have been similarly blessed to see my Mother's parents thrive deep into their 80's. Peace be with you all.
Larry Mac is kind of like Kyle Petty. He tells stories really well and remembers a lot of facts. I could listen to them talk all day.
You guys have done an outstanding job on the video. Brings back lots of memories. Small things you don’t really think about at the time, but learning about them after the fact is neat.
Thanks Scott we appreciate you
What the f does Kyle Petty got to do with this?
Kyle is a bit of Back Packer. Nobody like Kyle till he did VIctory Junction. Just saying
Kenny Bernstein was the first man in a top fuel car to run 300mph at Gainesville 1992 . Larry Mac is the man
Larry McReynolds is legitimately my favorite NASCAR person. He's been apart of NASCAR my entire existence, the only constant. Love this man!!! 🏁🏁
He’s awesome!
Mitchell, what you and Logan do, establishing a rapport with these legends is outstanding. Thank you for preserving the history of motorsport and taking us on the ride with you.
Thanks man we appreciate you
Growing up, I was best friends with Larry Macs nephew. It was so weird to go to my friends house and walk in and see Larry Mac sitting on the couch lol. There is not a more humble, nicer guy on this planet than Larry Mac. He knew I was a race fan and was always so incredibly awesome and down to earth. I can’t say enough good things about him and his family. Awesome people! Great video, as usual!
Larry Mac is such a cool dude. Just a regular guy talking racing history. I’m glad you are documenting these stories especially since racing like we know it will probably be a memory in 10-20 years. The number of racing fans is shrinking every day.
The last time I spoke to Larry was in the Yates Racing pits in Charlotte May 2003, I have pictures of me my wife and the Yates crew in the pit before the start of the race Robert and Doug were at driver introductions. Larry made my wife's day by putting her one of the show cars and started the engine, I have not seen her so frightened before or since, she almost jumped through the roof from the exhaust noise. I loved working with Ford because it allowed me to work with all the Ford teams.
Larry is a Stock Car Racing Treasure & from what I’ve only heard, a Great Man to work for and work with from week to week. he’s a sharp dude, for sure
You did it again Mitchell, another great former shop tour, and with none other than Larry Mac!!
Thanks man!!
All I have to say is wow! I love the way you guys dig deep with the questions. Don’t let the baby boomers NASCAR die off. Love it. ♥️👍🏼🙏
Thank you Steve 💪🏻
Larry Mac is a great guy and what he has done in NASCAR and the teams he worked for is legendary keep it up guys
I watched this man Sundays with just absolute joy cause he made it exceptionally entertaining. Feels good to see him again
Heck ya.
One of the things I notice about these shops from the late 80s and early 90s, they have more character. Most of them have everything that you need without anything you don't. Modern NASCAR race shops have become silly extravagant with amenities.
I agree
These shop tours never get old. It is so cool that the stories get to be told, and you two do a phenomenal job every time.
Thanks man we appreciate you
Larry McReynolds has always played an integral part in the history of NASCAR. I think he played an important role as Dale Earnhardt’s longtime crew chief.
Thanks man!
i think i could probably sit and listen to Larry all day long. i have no clue why he isnt in the booth full time. maybe by personal choice..? to me his popularity ranks very close if not on par with Dale Jr. this man is a legend.
Larry is the best he DW and Mike Joy are still what I hear in my head when I think NASCAR so much knowledge and history with all 3 of those guys
Thank You for having Larry Mac and many thanks to Larry Mac for taking such time to tell personal stories we old timers can actually view in our minds while we relive the moment. I can't remember any story captivating me with every word spoken. This video shows you and your beautiful smart wife have hit the Big Time with getting people like Larry Mac. Nobody has content like this. Congratulations they don't come any better than Larry Mac and I'm sure after watching this I can also tell he really enjoyed himself reliving those moments. Thanks for the memories.
Larry is a legend, he's the first person I think of when I remember growing up watching Nascar on TV
Me too. DW Mike Joy also
So much knowledge and experience behind every word.
No matter if it's behind the wall or behind the mic, he is a great ambassador for the sport!
Sorry to here of your Grandmother, 94yrs old. Sounds like a life well lived. Really appreciate what you both do with these videos and the popularity shows you are serving a need. Yrs ago I worked in CART (IndyCar now) w/ teammates that worked for Kenny B. and they always had great words to say about him. The major thing about Kenny is that he was groundbreaking with the green “business to business” B2B philosophy of gaining sponsorship, w/ both his Nascar, Open Wheel and NHRA teams. Great job on the content
Larry Mac is such a great story teller. I could listen to him narrate pretty much anything. :)
You are not just showing us viewers a very unique look into Nascar history by going to the museums, former race shops and interviewing former Nascar folks, etc but you are also allowing folks like Larry Mac and other Nascar personalities an opportunity to relive their former jobs and lives in Nascar and the chance to share more insight into their careers and lives, etc. That's awesome! Keep up the great work!
What you and your wife are doing to record all the nascar history that you can means the world to all of us die hard nascar fans. Thank you a million times over.
Thank you sir 💪🏻
@@Stapleton42Thank you Sir. I appreciate all you do for us fans. Your vids are awesome.
Fascinating incite to say the least.
I'm a huge Allison28 fan so You hit the right Man to interview.
Bernstein was a huge influence to cross sport
Now Stewart is following that model.
DVY Allison lives through us all.
Great vid young Man!
Sorry to hear about your grandma, hang tough. So fun to watch your channel grow and seeing how your hard work is paying off, great to see you guys getting hooked up with some big names in the sport, keep it going, the skies the limit👍 Thanks for the great videos!
Condolences. Grandmas have a special place at 93. She must have seen so much.
Thank you guys very much
I can't believe I've just now found this channel. Incredible content. What I know about race engineering can fit into a thimble, but watching these guys tell these stories is the greatest. I watch at least 2 races from this era a week. To me, NASCAR died with Earnhardt in 2001. They jumped the shark with the commercialism and gimmicks. Golden era lives on forever
Thanks man we’re glad you found us too!
Best channel on UA-cam!
Picking a favorite child is like picking a favorite episode you love them all equally and Larry Mack come on now, #3 forever
I could listen to larry talk all day he has a super sharp memory and just has the best stories and explanations of everything
sorry about your grandma.. our best to you and your family.. i remember watching Larry's career progress back then.. I was a NHRA fan before even Nascar.. not by long though... Kenny was my favorite driver.. and who doesn't love Larry Mac??
As an aspiring broadcaster who grew up with the COT and Gen 6 cars, Larry Mac, Mike, and DW are NASCAR to me. Sure there's also DJ, AB, Petree, KP, Sheheen, Byrnes (RIP) and a few others, but I think of Larry working 2/3rds of the season as a part of both FOX and TNT after NBC left. Sure knows his way around race cars, and finding out about his NHRA experience kinda shows why. Love what you guys do!
Thanks man! Pittsburgh guy too?

Loved this video. I have a lot of respect for Larry and enjoyed listening to his days at King Racing. I think it pretty cool that Ricky Rudd drove for King Racing then left to drive for Hendrick Racing but ended up buying the King Racing team after 1995 season for Rudd Performance Motorsports.
Larry Mac is an awesome crew chief especially for Robert yates Racing . Hello from Lancaster Pa and Big Diamond Speedway . Thank you so much for the Interviews.
thank you John we are glad you're here!
King Racing is one of my favorite forgotten nascar teams. Being a drag racer myself Kenny Bernstein was/is a hero of mine. So anything related to that team I love, being able to see the shop and what it all was is just amazing. Thank you so much for this
Thanks man that’s awesome
Larry Mc drove the family truckster hahaha 😂 Larry is awesome I really enjoy his story and appreciate what he has to say
Larry is hands down my favorite NASCAR crew chief since he started. That man has seen it all and is so very knowledgeable with everything NASCAR.
You will never find a more personable human being anywhere. And never takes credit for anything he does, and tells you the people responsible for it. I'm so glad you're finally catching up with him. I can't wait for the next one with Davey Allison.
Great job !!
Another gem! Meeting Larry Mac and getting a personalized shop tour would be one of the highlights of my life for sure!
Thanks Daniel!
You gotta love Larry. Every time I came across him he was working hard . One of the nicest and greatest guys in NASCAR.
Sounds like you two are about to hit the big time? Not sure what spurred you to create the series but the two of you are a breath of fresh air to many who see the sport gasping for air. Keep it up
Thanks man. I’m not sure what the big time is but I’m here for it 😂
@Stapleton42 Larry giving you a mention on his radio show along with the likes of Mark Martin in your corner . . . Only bigger and better things on the horizon. Be nice to see ya do a piece on Bill Elliott. That fan base will propel ya over the top in my humble estimation
There’s nothing like talking to the people that put nascar on the map. Keep up the good work
Thanks man we will
If anyone knows about King Racing, Larry is the guy. I really am happy that he agreed to do this!
Larry Mac is probably one of the hardest hands on working guy I’ve ever been around in the cup garage. I purchased a car from him in 1988 when he was in travelers rest, South Carolina. It turned in to a complicated situation, against my will I shouldn’t have done it, but I trusted his word and respected his situation and he never let me down. Most people when they achieved success, become self centered, conceded, or arrogant and ignore the little guys in the sport, Larry Mac has always stayed true, very respectful and humble, I’ve always admired him and respected him because he’s never forgotten where he’s came from. Class act
Love the direction you’ve taken your channel, thank you. NASCAR will never be what it was and I miss the old days.
Thanks man we appreciate you
Thanks for the distraction. You mentioned your grandmother. 5 years ago today. We lost my mom. These videos are awesome. I started watching Nascar when I was a kid. When we only saw. 3 or 4 races a year. It was a thing my father and I shared. Up until he passed. Its funny to this day. Still watching the races. I start to call my father. When something happens in a race
Thanks man we’re glad you’re here
@Stapleton42 I hope your grandmother pulls through. Tell Larry Mac. I think he is the man. Always like the way he explains himself
Yes!!! More Larry Mac Videos! Especially from the RYR Racing Era. Want to hear a lot about Larry Mac and Davey Allison!
Nice to see Larry Mac's return to the former King Racing Shop, so far, This one and Rusty Wallace's return to what was Blue Max Racing are my favorites of your videos
Thanks man!!
Sorry to hear about your Grandma! Larry is and always will be a Class Act. Great video as always from two of The Best
Thanks man
It always amazes me how much Larry Mac not only understands race cars and racing but also business, relationships with people, as well as good communication skills. He is a genuine person never too big in life to help someone or share his experience. And I say this just from what we all see in public. I can only imagine knowing him personally. Yet another great video guys!
Thanks man!!
Met Larry in the pits at Atlanta in 1996 and several times in the 2000’s when he worked at Fox. Great guy and I wish he was still in the booth.
So nice to see Larry Mac!!! He was always a favorite of mine as a crew chief and as a race commentator! He always seems to be so friendly and personable, a friend to everyone. Larry did a great job everywhere he went, but I can't help but think what would have been accomplished if Davey hadn't died. They would have been almost unstoppable. Thanks for another great interview!!! You guys are the best!!!
This is gold... I always wondered how Larry was able to be such a young crew chief. This explained it all....... Thank you....
Another ripper shop visit, loving the trips down memory lane.
What a legend Larry is, thanks guys.
I could sit and listen to Larry all day. Never miss his show on SiriusXM.
Larry Mac is a legend! Your channel is becoming a gold mine of NASCAR history documentation. Keep it up!
It was nice to hear the name Ricky Rudd and Lou Larossa. I followed every race that Rudd drove for the Bernstein team. Larry Mac was the real deal back then and now.
Larry has always seemed to be a hard ass micromanager as a crew chief, but a great guy when he was off the clock. Great interview, and one of my favorites.😊
Thank you Steve!
Great video. But when you got Larry to tell HIS story. Man, what a treasure. This is why this channel is SOOOO. Important to the preservation of the history of NASCAR. We need these untold stories recorded to keep forever. Thank you guys for your hard work.
Glad you enjoyed it!
I worked not far from the SC shop. I remember seeing the race cars outside the shop on some days. I would drive by everyday on my way home from work.
Larry is an awesome guy. His knowledge and experience is Nascar and it’s history is timeless. Keep up the great work Mitchell and Logan.
I really like listening to Larry Mac's commentary. I always like the way he did his job's best crew chief, or broadcaster. This history lesson was just another reason to respect him.
Sorry to here about your grandma. This was another great interview and tge story inside the interview.
I pulled a huge joke on Larry Mac. Being a State Trooper in SC, I got to know several hauler drivers. One of these was the driver of the #28 Havoline hauler. We had stopped on the side of I 85 and were chatting when a vehicle pulled over in front of us.The driver said that’s Larry our crew chief. I said put your hands behind your back like you are hand cuffed. Larry walked up to the passenger said and I rolled down the window and the driver said “I need $1500 dollars or I’m going to jail and the truck will be impounded. Larry was speechless until the driver started laughing. Keep up the great work on these videos.
That’s funny 😂
Thinking of you all sorry about your grandma not being well mate.. Appreciate the awesome video and Larry Mac could almost have a few videos he has been around so long..Cheers from Australia guys.
Thanks man we appreciate you
Always love Larry Mac , i remember the shop being in Travelers Rest SC , like Larry said it was a smaller team , but good things come in small packages . My first RC car was the 26 Quaker State Buick , quite awhile back .
That’s awesome!
Larry McReynolds is outstanding. An excellent video of his journey in the early years. Some things I remember like yesterday. Many things he explained I never knew. He is one genuine nice guy to take the time to meet you, and explain everything. Thank you Mitchell and Logan for putting together this incredible video. I know it takes time and effort, but this was an excellent video. Definitely a Daytona 500 win here.
Another excellent video, Mitchell and Logan. Larry Mac was one of the best, and still one of the most respected figures in NASCAR. I have his book, "Real NASCAR" and is great reading from start to finish. I would watch anything Larry was a part of.
Larry Mac is the coolest man ever this is genuinely amazing to see how far you guys have come.
Thanks man!!
Now for the real test. Getting Jr back into DEI 😂. Love these legend interviews. Nascar will never be like it was in the 90s. I think that may be looked upon as the golden age of Nascar
Maybe someday 😂
Mitchell.Sorry about your grandmother.I love what you and Logan are doing on the channel.Keep up the great work.
Thanks man!
It is always great to hear these stories from the team guys. They have done the hard yards. Loved the Quaker State cars.
That was cool can't wait to see more from Larry Mac! God bless your Grandmother and your family. 🙏
For some of your guests, your careful preparation for the "show" is necessary to keep things rolling smoothly. Larry McReynolds is one of those who has many stories to share and does a nice job of doing so. He seems like a very humble person for all of what he has accomplished in racing and, of course, in broadcasting. You're probably aware that he announced some of Garrett Mitchell's racing events.
I worked for Brayton Engineering in Coldwater, Michigan back in the early 90s. We built the Buick Indy V6 engines for King Motorsports.
They won the Pole and Indianapolis Motor Speedway track record for the 1992 Indy 500. Kenny did everything right with his Indy Car program as well.
Larry talks about the cars that GM provided to the Race teams and for us it was a pair of loaded Buick Roadmaster wagons (with wood grain as well).
These days, I am a Plastic Injection Mold designer in West Michigan but I sure enjoyed my time working for Scott and Lee Brayton.
And working for team owners like Kenny Bernstein, John Menard and others. Those were some great times.
@mdotto8707….was that record in 92 when Garrero then spun out on the parade lap?
@@Fatboyeethat Pole winning 4 lap track record in 1992 was 232.482 mph. The 4 lap time came in at 2:34.851.
Yes much to our dismay Roberto wasn't able to control the 900 plus horsepower we gave him and the 55 inches of boost allowed
for the Buick. In Guerrero's defense, after a sweltering month of May, the temps that day were well below normal and the traction was poor.
Other cars had the same issue until the tires and the track warmed up a bit.
@@mdotto8707….yes I felt so bad for Roberto and Kenny. Roberto had bad luck at Indy like the year he had it won for
Granatelli and stalled the car on his last pit stop.
I have this Quaquer State Nascar Buick model from Monogram. My Dad gave it to me to assemble and have fun on it. Thanks Dad!
I didn't know Kenny Bernstein had a Nascar team, would never of known with your channel.
Thank-you.
Thanks mark!
How dosent like hearing Larry Mac working with Kenny Bernstein both of then great to watch, also Dale Jr as well Both great to listen too!!
That's cool having Larry Mac showing the old 26 team. Would be awesome to have him to do the RYR shop.
Larry Mac said that Raymond Beadle was a factor for Kenny getting into Cup. I think he hit it on the head. Raymond and Kenny grew up together in Texas.
Great video! Thanks to Larry Mac for sharing his time and memories. I’m more of a drag racing fan than NASCAR, so I always rooted for King Motorsports.
Although he didn't crew chief very long for my favorite driver growing up, Larry was one of my favorite crew chiefs while growing up
Sorry to hear about your Grandmother!
Great video and love Larry Mac, Americas Crew Chief
I could listen to his stories all day. Great job @Stapleton42!
I remember Dale Jarrett taking over the 28 car in 1994 after Irvan’s accident at Michigan. When Irvan came back, Jarrett gave the ride back to him and then Yates created the 88 Quality Care Ford for Jarrett that he is most known for and that he won the 1999 Winston Cup championship in. Pairing DJ with Todd Parrott was a genius move.
For some reason YT keeps failing to tell me you have new content. Guess I need to manually check to see what you got going on? I love the memories of people you visit. Larry Mc was very interesting to hear from!
Really enjoyed this tour. I'd love to meet Larry some day, he's a true legend in the sport! Hope you're feeling better.
Thanks man! I’m almost back to 100%
Mitchell you are pulling the best of the best to document history, and I appreciate it so so much buddy, I hope you keep growing. Goodluck and thanks.
I can listen to Larry Mc All Day!!!!! Just a great dude!!!!
Wonderful to see Larry Mac in another setting and being able to recount so many stories. Can't wait for the RYR video.
Mitchell and Logan great Job every question allowed Larry to open another chapter of his time As crew chief with king racing so smooth great video Stapleton42 takes the Checkered Flag 🏁
You Guy's are still Rocking it 😊 Awesome job love the history lessons !!!!! Love your Channel 😊
Always enjoy the learning and seeing the history. A video of all the old team photos would be cool 😎
Once again you knocked it out of the park!! So glad these old shops have been saved even if it's something else. At least they are still here😮
Very very enjoyed watching this video with the history of Larry Mac back in the 80s. I remember the Quaker State car and seeing it race back then as a kid. It very exciting to learn and see all the history of racing back then. My uncle drove his car up in Agawam Ma when it was Riverside Park. Going back to when King racing, Yates Racing, and even when Larry was at DEI what an amazing history and gentlemen of the sport of racing. Even have friends today that Larry may know in racing. Even today Larry Mac is still an amazing knowledgeable guy with all the changes over the coarse of the years still a stand out of knowledgeable young man. Thank you for the video and the to all who spent time making this history of the sport. Very appreciated, thank you.
