- More people than expected turned out for the opening of Ghost Town in the Sky in Haywood County.
The opening was delayed last month due to state code requirements. But hundreds got in line for the holiday opening, taking a chairlift ride to the top of the mountain overlooking Maggie Valley.
"When my children were small we brought them and now we're bringing the grandkids. It does look like a long line but for the first day, grand opening, this is not bad," says Judy Shirley, visiting with her family from Wake County.
Owner Alaska Presley says she expected 500 visitors on the Fourth of July opening. But more than that showed up, leading to some long lines. "I'm just worried because I've got so much business. I'm afraid I can't handle them all like I want to handle them all and make them happy," says Presley.
Presley bought Ghost Town two years ago and faced challenges in reopening including passing state inspections. And a planned June 20th opening was delayed due to water issues.
Now that she is open for business, Presley just wants to please. "But the turnout, I appreciate it and it's so nice. And I'm so happy to see them. I hope that I can make them happy," she says.
Visitors can take a chairlift or a bus to the top, and once there, enjoy dancing and gunfight shows.
Ghost Town will be open this season Friday through Monday from 10 a.m. till 5 p.m.
