I believe that this is one of the all-time greatest albums ever. This particular song was also played by The Home Service (one of the many combinations and permutations of Fairport Convention / Albion Band, this time led by John Tams) which was the orchestra for _The Mysteries_ in London in the late '70s, one of the theatrical highlights of my life. As I recall, this was played, appropriately, during the scene showing The Flight Into Egypt.
the instrumental that opens this track is called Ampleforth which the segues very nicely into Lay Me Low, the perfect illustration of what is argueably The Albion Band's finest hour, Rise Up Like The Sun.
Thank you for posting this; so beautiful and soul-stirring... (I also came from TeddyRadiator, a wonderful authir of a wonderful story; hello fellow readers!)
Thanks for this. I remember listening to this when it was new in a record shop in Stafford. Needless to say I bought it and still have it but you've reminded me I must play it more often.
Masterpiece masterpiece masterpiece ! This album is 1000 stars, or a billion beautiful brilliant bright lights in the firmament of music. Thank You for sharing
Pretty song. Sad song! Does tend to bring out the weepies. Thanks for putting this out and thanks to TeddyRdiator who suggested we all come and listen! I think I'll move on to the sidebar and check out more from The albion Band. The name Kate M sounds familiar for some reason. Do you know what else she's done that I might have come across her?
I discovered this song when my drama group Playbox Theatre did The Mysteries plays, and we had to sing this upon the death of Mother Mary. They used this as a basis to go upon. All I can say is.... GOD BLESS PLAYBOX THEATRE
This is just really awful. Wow. It's a Shaker song for pity's sake! Coope, Boyes and Simpson\s version uses the same harmonies, which are really nice when liberated from the beat, the electric guitar and the chorus, but at least theirs is trad sounding with some actual soul and real emotion. This is a 70s pop mess and has really butchered a beautiful folk spiritual.
I do agree with littlepuppypause, I like this version but Coope Boyes and Simpson is Magical, magnificent, moving, lovely and beautifu., plus any other complimentary words available. C B and S version is how it should be.!!!!!
This song inspired such a good Fan Fiction. Thank you TeddyRadiator🙌
Thanks TeddyRadiator. Your fic is still reaching people, as is this song!
Hadn't heard this version for years. Great vocals, especially by the female backing singers
Just found and finished the fanfic. Oh my goodness! *wipes tears*

The master of understatement.
great version. Rick Sanders Fiddle. I like John Tam's singing. Great Album.
Beautiful track with fantastic backing vocals courtesy of amongst others the late Kate McGarrigle and the incomparably gifted Julie Covington.
The best vocals ever in English folk rock!!!!
..you can't disagree with that....
Up there
Got this on tape I think, so haven't heard it for 30 years or summat. God, John Tams' voice....
lovely song

The fanfiction? Me too! If not, than I feel rather stupid in asking..
I performed in a version of The Mysteries in the 80s and this song was sung in our version by the Shepards...magical.
Great song
@TeddyRadiator I go along with that - Happy New Year :-)

this is best version the coope boyes simpson is just a churchy right on for old folkies
C B S version is so moving, folkies or not,
Richard Thompson on electric guitar?
in fact it's Graeme Taylor, ex-Gryphon.
I also thought it was Richard Thompson...
Teddy R. Was right. Awesome song, but I like the version by coope, boyes and Simpson better
