It's easy to forget just how popular Mariah Carey was in the 90's, She was the biggest selling artist of that decade and had 14 U.S.number ones in that decade alone
Mariah Carey is the only artist - solo or band, male or female - to ever have songs at #1 in 11 consecutive years. She ruled the 90s and it wasn't even close.
This list looked a lot different about 3-5 years ago. Janet Jackson was placed one position ahead of Michael Jackson. I wonder how billboard ranks this.

What ChatGPT didn't tell you is that with there all times list they will weigh eras different due to songs and albums charting for different average lengths of time due to accessibility of music at the time and how music got consumed and counted for their charts. Basically for singles it better to have been an artist back in the 60's when singles didn't chart for that long and bad to be an artist today (in the late 2010's onward) when huge hits chart forever. However for albums it is better to have been an artist today (mid 2010's onwards) when albums debut at #1 and then fall off pretty quickly and bad back in the 60's when albums took their time climbing up the charts peaking really high for a long time. However any artist can be super high regeardless of any era if they perform amazingly well enough on the charts upon release. Also The Hot 100 has had recurrency rules since the early 90's and the Billboard 200 has rotated recurrency rules in and out and (i believe) since 2008 the Billboard 200 does not have recurrency rules anymore. Older artists only chance to move up the list is through having big iconic albums stick around on the Billboard 200. Also this is extremely US based and you didn't grow up here and weren't alive when these charts started so I wouldn't be surprised if you don't know the chart impact of all of the artists.
Thank God for your comment. I was about to write almost the same thing. I was kinda gagged when they were surprised by Usher's position on the list. I mean, the man is the most important musician of the 2000s in terms of charts. He might not have the longevity he deserves, but what he did when he was at his peak is impressive. It was a massive hit after a massive hit. And many artists don't have this huge success in terms of charts in America as they have in the world. So, it's difficult to judge based on what we know from the impact they have today. Hot 100, for example, doesn't measure impact for the future. It measures the success of a song or an album at the moment they are released.
I guess Pentatonix will won 😅 I cried watching Pentatonix' Bohemian Rhapsody rendition while I've never to the Queen's original 😂 They're that good ...
I was so happy to see the Jackson’s.. that song specifically. Usually you either get an iconic early Jackson 5 song or a Michael Jackson hit, so I like that being in there. 😁
LMAO, Rod's subdued "yeahh" when Prince showed up on the list. Also Joel's reactions to some of the artists is always hilarious. Internationally renowned megastars and he's like "really?" Ha ha ha. His reaction to Santana gets me every time. 😅😂😂
The ranking is based on a point system assigning a certain for every week they spent on the two main Billboard Charts. Highest point for every week at #1. All their singles and albums are counted. They also adjusted certain time periods like the 80s when the labels pressured the charts into increasing the chart turnover rate so songs don't spent too much time at number 1, meaning they get more #1 hit songs.
Difficult thing to discuss in modern music because everyone mixes genres now. Many musicians these days even talk about how the entire concept of "the genre" is "dead" because there aren't solid genres anymore and every artist kinda just does whatever they want. The fact that some country charts reject some artists if they aren't "country enough" is really the only exception that exists at all anymore, and even that is pretty much always just based on the artist or lyrics not being in line with the conservative values a lot of country folk hold and not about the musical style.

I had to check because this list is kinda weird. This one takes into account everything, sales, airplay, streams etc. There's another that counts only the Hot100 chart and it's different. I don't think there's anyone that can be compared to him...
Honestly, I thought he had a shot at top 10. He had 9 No 1s and dozens of top 40s. He had 8 Top 10 singles in a row in the 70s. Virtually every Wings album reached No 1 on the top 200 album charts. I guess it's the streaming that brought him down. I had to laugh though when they were so shocked to see him on the list at all. They're like, usually John outranks him on lists like this, so suddenly they were expecting John to be on the list, based on their own bias. Of course, they didn't expect John to be on the list either UNTIL Paul was. And I'm like, nah guys, not a chance! He never sold like that. It was kinda satisfying to see their shock. Macca always defying expectations...😘

It’s cos Janet practically ignores Europe when promoting everything. Seems to go to Japan all the time but Europe is ignored for decades at a time and she just gets forgotten in the grand scheme of things.
Janet should be appreciated more.
you should compare this with the UK charts now to see how much of a difference there is and why that might be
20:13 i've always found phone bans at events to be ridiculous because:
1. if your fans wanna relive the memories, let them
2. they could get an urgent notification from work, family, etc.
3. one day phones will grow too big for any pouch or camera tape
20:17 and this is just painful
It’s probably because it’s come out recently that Don Henley has been lip syncing so less cameras cut down on how obvious it would be.

Yay some MJ 🔥.Did you have an wonderful birthday Joel ? And you do not look old at all you look like as if you are in your early 30's
He’s 36

Awesome video!!👍 I was confused with the rankings also. Love Phil Collins' songs💗💟
I was so happy to see the Jackson’s.. that song specifically. Usually you either get an iconic early Jackson 5 song or a Michael Jackson hit, so I like that being in there. 😁
I love that for Celine Dion he played the recorder version of My Heart Will Go On in the background lol.
LMAO, Rod's subdued "yeahh" when Prince showed up on the list. Also Joel's reactions to some of the artists is always hilarious. Internationally renowned megastars and he's like "really?" Ha ha ha. His reaction to Santana gets me every time. 😅😂😂
😁
How can anyone dislike Whitney Houston. Possibly the greatest female vocals of all time, along with Aretha Franklin, Etta James and Mariah Carey.
I dislike her
I met her in the late 80s and she was so rude and unprofessional. Without any makeup on, she was not attractive.
Has Roomie ever done a video on artists that crossed Genres? People like Beyonce, MGK, and others
Funnily weird ranking 😅
I like seeing a bunch of great artists in no particular order, but it's really hard to take a ranked list seriously when it puts Queen at 87th
You never heard of them 8 years ago
Love MJ ❤
Most successful artists 👀 Its going to be quite a list to go through. Wonder who'll be featured this time around. Danke for sharing, hope everyone is doing well. Keep It Up Bro 🎶 😎 👊
Everyone in the world knows Herb Alpert's song. It's called Spanish Flea and it is basically the number one "I don't know the name of this song, but I've heard it forever".
I’m pretty sure the billboard chart started in 1958, which would explain why Elvis is lower than usual. He was going strong for 4 years prior to the list so stuff like hound dog and jailhouse rock wouldn’t have been counted towards his total. If it was he’d be top 2 easy
Keep posting we love your content.
Joel should check out Triumph. Great Canadian rock band with a severely underrated frontman. Rik Emmit had insane vocal range and was probably one of the best live performers of the 80’s
Was not expecting to see this comment! Triumph is one of my all time favorite bands.
Only roomie can go 20 minutes in the video until he introduce himself
I honestly think this list is absolutely criminal for not having ABBA on this list.
REPORT THE VIDEO! IT IS ONLY BASED ON SUCCESS IN THE UNITED STATES, LET'S REMEMBER THAT ABBA IS A SWEDISH BAND! THEY DOMINATED EUROPE AND ARE MUCH MORE SUCCESSFUL THAN THE VAST MAJORITY OF THE UNKNOWN LOCAL AMERICAN PEOPLE WHO APPEAR HERE!
This was obviously the US Billboard Charts. If you included the total World Billboard Charts, Abba would be in the Top 3. They dominate the Charts in all of European countries, including Australia & New Zealand. Sadly, they only had one #1 hit song here in America & that was Dancing Queen. We definitely got it wrong here in America. Nevertheless, I'm a hugh ABBA fan. 👸
I wanted to see a list based on your opinion because there's really weird stuff in these lists, like it seems like whoever pays more to then gets a better spot, for instance, Ed Sheeran is top 5 in every platform and was put in top 80+
Surprised by the lack of Bowie and ABBA
The list is based only on success in the United States! Bowie is among the 10 most successful UK acts of all time! In the UK he had 11 number 1 albums and 36 in the top 10, as well as 25 songs in the top 10 and several of them number 1! Don't you see that most artists here are only known in America?
Bowie only has 1 Billboard No 1 and it was co-written by John Lennon.
🤩wow new video! Nothing could be better
Neil Diamond was Mom's favorite singer along with Celine. She also loved Air Supply.
KING MJ 👑
How the hell did The Weeknd not make the top 100 list??
Because there was music before 2018
I'm more confused about how Cher didn't. Her career spans 50 years.
What a crazy, eclectic list. Is Rod lying on the couch in the dark over there?

Always look forward to a roomie video❤

17:50 Celine Dion was the queen of love songs in the 90s! Songs I liked I didn’t know who it was but found out it was Celine! 😮
And I can’t believe Garth Brooks toured so long and so many people saw him over and over he’s prob a millionaire 😆
And you confused me at the end there 😂
Taylor Swift being in the Top 10 as the only artists to debut in the 2000s is crazy. I know she is going to go up a few ranks in the future.
This list was actually created a few years ago before the eras tour and some of her recent albums, I believe with an updated version she'd be in the top 5, possibly challenging for top 3!

This is so funny and light hearted! Yay for having Rod Kim again, but how did he not know Britney Spears sang "Toxic." He should know that lol! It was pretty nostalgic hearing: Creedence Clearwater Revival, John Denver, and The Eagles. I agree when you thought The Eagles would be higher on the list too. DEFINITELY do something on Pink Floyd! Love the videos!
it can't be based on album sales, since there is no way that Kelly Clarkson has sold more albums than Queen and Pink Floyd... it must be based on highest number of high-charting songs... a really weird list in some ways

Tina Turner, Cher, Shania Twain, Alannis??? 😮
Miss Barbra streisand
In terms of her status as a singer ,she is ranked 6th.
If you include her work in the film industry, there is no doubt that she is the best entertainer.
This is clearly a list based purely on the us. There is no way that this is worldwide
Notable artists that did not make the list:
•Backstreet Boys
•Nirvana
•ABBA
•Christina Aguilera
•Avril Lavigne
•Amy Winehouse
•Frank Sinatra
•Snoop Dogg

Also ABBA

abba was only modestly successful in the USA, sinatra and snoop were not a singles act for the most part, and the rest had short careers as big chart people

Hmm. How did The Rolling Stones beat her? I guess in Top 200 album sales?
“Go Your Own Way” sung by & about Stevie Nicks & Lindsey Buckingham after they split up before the band split. She stayed with Fleetwood Mac & he left obviously and I know he did solo stuff because he did “Holiday Road” the song from the original “Nat’l Lampoons Vacation” from ‘82 or whenever it was released with Chevy Chase, Beverly D’angelo
You should react to video game themes, like Halo, Assassin’s Creed, Battlefield or Humankind.

This list doesn’t make much sense, sorry! I’d like to know the source, just out of curiosity.
Interesting thing about "Where is the love" is that it's actually Justin Timberlake singing the chorus
I'm disappointed there's no Frant Sinatra or his daughter, Nancy, Sam Smith, John Lennon, Imagine Dragon, Bob Marley, NWA, Christina Aguilera, Salena Gomez, Sia, Salt N Pepa, Akon, Arianna, Snoop Dogg, TOTO, Destiny's Child, Fall Out Boy, Daft Punk, Weekend, David Guetta, James Blunt, One Republic, 2.Pac, Dr. Dre, TLC, Nicki Minaj, Outkast, NSYNC, Backstreet Boys, Olivia Rodgrigo, and Kendrick Lamar. Yes that's true 😊
"Taylor Swift has a song about him right".
No. The song is called Tim McGraw but it's not about him. The main chorus line is "when you think Tim McGraw, I hope you think of me". The song is reminiscing about an old relationship and she's saying when he listens to Tim McGraw she hopes that she will come to his mind.
Taylor has said that she made her debut singles title his name so that people will think it's a Tim McGraw song and listen to it and then discover Taylor instead. It was a way of gaining new listeners as an upcoming artist.

@@OnlyGoodMusic_ yes understand it says that in the description. Thought Bowie was more prolific than that in the US.
@@veddyveddygood Likewise, Bowie was successful in the United States, I mean, he has filled stadiums with more than 80 thousand people in the United States, in 1983 he became the highest paid artist for a single performance when he performed in front of 200 thousand people at the US Festival, Bowie It had number 1 singles in the US and has spent over a thousand weeks on the album chart! The point is that Bowie is an international artist, many of those who appear in this video are quite unknown outside of America, Bowie has played in stadiums in Russia, Greece, Hong Kong, Thailand, New Zealand, Croatia... etc.

25:25 this list isn't a value judgement. it's based off of some type algorithm based on billboard charts. Now, you can argue how relevant those charts are today, and if it's a good gauge of an artist's success, but this list isn't positing one artist is "better" than another. it's pure numbers-based
I had to check because this list is kinda weird. This one takes into account everything, sales, airplay, streams etc. There's another that counts only the Hot100 chart and it's different. Of course The Beatles are still no1 but the others are either higher or lower.
Also, Paul McCartney being top20 as a solo artist is mind blowing.
I feel a cool video idea, would be diving into and exploring metal more closely and the different sub-genres. Like Sabaton is probably the most popular modern metal band but haven't seen any video featuring them apart from one video that got claimed.
