Challenge idea for roomie: You remake songs only from your memory. You are not allowed to look up the lyrics or listen to the song during the process, you can only use what you actually remember to make it. Would be fun if it's a song you don't really remember the exact text to.
That would be a fun challenge with his friends. See who gets the closest
I love this idea
Upvote!
I think he has done this,
Good idea 😂
For songs from 10 years ago, I automatically expected to see the first single or song that made the artists blow up, but then I realize how much longer some of these artists have been around in the industry. For some, 10 years ago is already like midway into their career. Especially for younger artists like Miley Cyrus, this really puts things into perspective
Me expecting to hear a Hannah Montana song and then hearing Wrecking Ball. Me:..Oh. I am just old.
Not me thinking that 10y ago Miley Cyrus was gonna be “can’t be tamed” and was actually “wrecking ball”. I feel old
Mileys face hasn't aged a day since Wrecking Ball but her look, especially her hair, is like mid 40s now.
you came 14 years late
I can't believe it gang same here ig we old asf😂😂
The Nick Jonas song Roomie was talking about is "Jealous". Justin Timberlake's "Selfish" does sound a lot like it.
I believe you pointed at my name when you said this patreon is a bad boi. So I'm here to claim my title haha 😏
lol 😂

@@randomjunk6921 Yes, patrons get early access. It's not a glitch. I hope I helped!
Doing One Direction members would be cool! Considering they were together in 2014, and now 10 years later they are solo. Especially since Zayn is releasing an album soon and he has completely changed genres!
Wait what one direction part ways?
@@FistNoob yes haha! Back in 2015
I find it funny that Cruel Summer was used as the "now" song considering it came out 5 years ago lol.
Yea 2024 Taylor has poetic music comming out soon.
Yeah it really doesn’t make sense and he probably should not have put her on this list if I’m being honest bc she has not released anything this year yet tho she will be
Cruel summer got dropped as a single last year
@@Itstotallynotaly she released multiple things last year though so he probably could have used that
lol ig it’s become her new signature hit

It’s really cool to see how these singers have evolved musically wise, I still can’t comprehend how 2014 was 10 years ago..
Seriously
That was like 3650 days ago, think in every one of those days, every tear, all the effort, all the uncertainty. Every meal you have, all those trips to study/work, it was a loong time ago. For me, the trick to dont fall in that brain trap of the time going fast, is to use references. A lot of them. If you use just 2 of them, like 2 songs of the same artist, without any context other context, it would mess with your time apreciation.
How fast time goes, depends on the amount of memories you have stored or you invoque between those two time stamps. Put more of them, and time will go slower. The same goes for the present. while more details you take attention, while more times you break the rutine and while more times you avoid automatic mode, time will go slower. Time is just an illusion, needed by our mind to make sense of reality and, in part I believe is to create the sense of free will.

"I'm glad i don't have an Eye Tracker on" - Roomie 2024
Why did my man admit to it 😅 just outed himself
We all were thinking the same thing lmao
I mean we know before we were doing the same 😂
Roomie every year 😂 I feel like there’s always a video once a year where he goes “I’m glad I don’t have an Eye tracker on” 😂😅
It might be fun if he actually did have one for a video, even if the tracker was Patreon exclusive
I love how Imagine Dragons is true to their style throughout.
They didn't, they made a few songs that weren't that stile but just immediately went back to their old style because that was what worked for them.
actually that's not true at all. They change all the time, but also keep some of the originality in a few here and there.
@@hopea998 What originality
I don't use UA-cam comments to debate. If you don't think they have their own style, that's fine. But they have came up with some original things that make you know it's their song, or it's a song made by a band who were inspired by them. If you disagree, that's fine. @@SheogorathReacts
They didn’t they changed a lot like origins is quite different to s+m but video game music so the songs they used in the vid they are often pretty similar

You should do the top 100 most critically acclaimed songs
Yeah, there's a website that is a sort of aggregator for music reviews. It's AcclaimedMusic or something like that. Can't link to stuff on UA-cam without it hiding the comment. But there you can sort by most acclaimed artists, albums, or songs, and you can do it by individual years or decades. It's really cool. Apparently, Pet Sounds by the Beach Boys is the most acclaimed album of all time.
He didn't dare to bring Twenty One Pilots in this list. They freaking change the genre with the release of every new album
Fr!
fr when he said something like bands usually don't change there sound much or whatever i was like- BUT TOP THO
@@ohhello1809on top of that you have Paramore which is the biggest example of a band changing genres with every album. I was looking out for some top though with overcompensate being in the hot 100 and releasing recently and 10 years ago being between the releases of vessel and blurryface

Oh my god, Blank Space was 10 years ago?! I was sitting there waiting for Our Song, Love Story, You Belong With Me, etc.
I was waiting for something off of debut 😭😭😭💀💀
It's interesting that Joel said "That was barely Pharrell Williams" when most people actually know him as a writer & producer. He produced a lot of the top 1 songs in the last decades, also known for helping produce & write a lot of rap hits.
Joel: It's maximalist for sure
Me: wth does maximalist sound like? thousand layers of music and sound? No idea what he means.

Meghan trainor’s music never changes istg its the same song over and over 😭
Good grief, yes. Her nasally singing style grates on my nerves. Maybe that’s just me, though.
I honestly really like her new song though. And she has done diffrent stuff especially on her album TREAT MYSELF
They really are all the same. Makes me crazy.
I've never liked any of her music. They all sound the same...terrible!
she's probably the only one on the list who still doing the same schtick 10 years after
I think you're thinking of Jealous by Nick Jonas. It has the falsetto and talks about the exact same thing.
To be fair, Pharrell has always been a producer first and just happened to be successful with his own music too.
Should have put something in midnight album for Taylor Swift. Or like any artist in their latest songs. Just to show the difference in the pass decade
I was half expecting 1989 vs 1989 to be honest.
Lol Blank Space vs. Blank Space (Taylor's Version) is what it should've been.
You did Meghan Trainor dirty😭she released a whole new album this year and you chose to listen to a feature on a Jason track💀
Ngl Tyler, The Creator deserves to be on this video. He went from edgy teen to a mature adult and his lyrics and production has changed alot
Yes! Would love to see him being featured in an eventual Pt. 2.

20:54 There is also an NSYNC song called Selfish, so technically there’s two Justin Timberlake songs with that name!
haha amazing
And a Britney Spears song called Selfish
@@RoomieOfficial I think you may have also been thinking of Nick Jonas’s song Jealous the lyrics and general idea of the song

Could be wrong but that new Miley video feels very Shania Twain inspired video wise to me but Miley could just be into fashion as well. Some of these artists really haven't changed and I never put together how many video game related songs Imagine Dragons have done until now.
And single ladies 🎉
Imagine Dragons do a lot of video game collabs cause they're huge gamers themselves
You should check out Big Time Rush. They were active 10 years ago because they starred in the Nickelodeon show by the same name. They became a legit band outside of the show. They released albums and toured during that time also. They recently made a comeback and released new music with an updated sound. They have also been touring again.I would to hear what you think about their music.
Oml thnx for the info I was obsessed and would love to see them together again
I loved that you did this topic! You can do artists from 20 yrs ago vs now! :-)
That would be a fun idea! We’d be seeing Beyoncé, Kanye West, Sia, Pharrell, and Justin Timberlake again, with a few other potential contenders being Usher, Coldplay, Kylie Minogue, Madonna, and David Guetta.

Miley has been one of my favorite artists for quite a while. I love that she's always reimagining herself. I always look forward to what she comes up with next!
Awesome video!! It is interesting to see how singers have evolved in their music over a ten year span. Thanks so much!👍😊
It's funny how the two Meghan Trainor songs sounded so similar. That's actually how I found your channel a while ago. I heard clips of a few of her songs and was thinking "I can't be the only one who thinks they all sound the same", so I went on UA-cam and looked it up. I found your "songs that sound exactly the same" videos, and I don't remember if you talked about Meghan in one of them, but regardless I still subscribed after watching the video!
Her producer found one cool trick and that’s all they needed lol
Why you shared this what you dud above
Dua Lipa went under my radar 10 years ago. So happy I found her, alwas so catchy🎶🎶
Oh god, I didn't knew Charlie really, but with THAT new song, now I wanna know MORE. That was FIRE
The production on Dua Lipa songs is so frekin GOOOOD!!!
9/10! For the last 5 hits at least! Whoever she works with!!! Frekin talent!
I would've actually loved to see PINK in one of these because of the whole change since she got a kid etc
I really miss the music of 10+ years ago. So much nostalgia here
The new Miley Cyprus video reminds me of Rocky Horror Picture Show, with the zoomed in mouth and the hands from Time Warp.
Omg yeah, very Trixie/the usher
im not huge on imagine dragons anymore, but huge disservice to them not picking a newer song like Giants or Dull Knives

Year 2 of waiting for Roomie to find out that Pharrell is a prolific producer and who has written and produced so many well loved bangers. From Holla Back Girl to Slave 4 U. Someone plz tell him D:
Its so funny that lighthouse keeper was released in 2020 and after that he had also released a new album but it is still used as 2024 in this video lol! But great stuff keep it up!
Yeah…that was a surprising pick. I was expecting to see any between “I’m Not Here To Make Friends”, “VULGAR” (with Madonna), or “In The City” (with Charli XCX) - all 2023 releases which show how much Sam’s image and vibe has changed since 2014.
i used to watch you a lot in 2019, you still make good videos and i got reminded of banger songs
The part where he says “thank god I don’t have a eye tracker” for the weekend 2014 is funny 😂
2:40 that sounds like a cool lyric writing exercise, but it does certainly water down the other elements of song creation.
I feel so strange that these are from 10 years ago. Makes me realise even more how fast life goes because these songs feel like 5 years ago to me.
Don't forget there was a time frame where the world basically stood still in the last 5 years
Thought we were gonn see songs like "party in the usa" i feel old now
When he was doing the weekends 10 years ago vs now he said he was glad about not having a eye tracker
I’m early but I remember when you use to do the singing videos and I fr loved them keep up the work
gonna do more music making stuff soon
JC was definitely a chorus kid growing up. He writes pop songs that are made to not sound stupid when arranged for a choir.
I'd say what that Miley video is referencing is Tina Turner
Joel, you said something interesting about how bands are more likely to keep the same sound so they retain the same fans and dang, it made me realize why MCR's fans were so upset when Black Parade came out. I love all their albums but can totally see why some fans would not continue with their newer things. I'm sure it's that way with many bands and probably why Taylor Swift is so appreciative of her fans allowing her to try new things. Can't wait until her new album drops since many swifties think it'll be a rock album!
It's why I love MCR. Most of their songs sound unique. I don't like samey-samey songs.
Interesting video, great artists. Let this be a series👏👏
YES you’ve finally covered Jacob Collier in a video, he’s great!
7:00 I'm really enjoying the alternate chord progression! It really makes a very familiar, standard song feel different.
Should’ve chosen Taylor’s Version of Blank Space for TS for Now
Yeah probably, but it's basically the same song so it doesn't show much change for her
Don't do this , tv are for fans to care about not general audience.
@@Flixtex mate, it's okay for non swifties to listen to taylor's version. i'd prefer it if more of them did

Oh my, ten years already ...
I love seeing the evolutions, some are really mind blowing.
I'd say dua lipa is the biggest pure Pop Star right now
Of course taylor is more popular but she aint a clear cut Pop Star
If ur talking about only pop star , Ariana Grande does more number than dua lipa.
Taylor is the biggest artist not popstar , countrystar or anything like that
ariana is biggest lmao dua isn't half close to her
and yes taylor is biggest musician ofc
How is Taylor not a clear cut pop star? She is a star because of her music and she never did anything else than pop music. Or did I miss her opera and jazz phase? 😅 Pop music is music that is made to appeal to the mainstream. It is not a specific style. Because what's popular changes all the time. Even if she started doing Blink 182 style songs she would still be a pop star.
@@FROZEN2DISNEY_ i think arianas song only last and are hits only when it comes out. But after some years people dont seem to remember it. They dont seem to be timeless classic.
Roomie if you haven’t already, you should do a video on Zhavia! She was on The Four and she was honestly the most amazing talent to come out of that show
speaking of interpolation, there's a German song called "1,2,3,4: Heute Nacht da Feiern Wir" that, to me, sound like a very clear interpolation of the YMCA, but I see nothing about it online.
This was pretty enjoyable! You seem to be happier in general and I love that. Physical and mental health is always important. Some of the artists' music that I liked then and also now are: The Weeknd, Miley Cyrus, and Drake. Even though it's been 10 years, their voices still sound amazing and they still have great songs that I like. Of course some style of music has changed, but I still enjoy their songs, then and now. A few artists' music that I liked better before are: Sam Smith, Beyonce, and Taylor Swift. They have always been talented, but for me a lot of their older songs seem more emotional and deeper. I hope you have great weekend and stay healthy! And as a Patreon, you're very welcome! Thank You for all the early access videos and for trying to keep it positive. You are awesome!😎
Can we just take a second to acknowledge how this man looks exactly like Cole Sprouse 🤔
Ahh! I was just saying this about the new Gangsta’s Paradise interpolation the other day! And was accused of sounding old 😯 I can get on board with the I’m Blue, Barbie girl, Whenever wherever and more interpolations but not gangsta’s paradise. They took an iconic trailblazing song with a tremendously important messaging, and made it into just another scorned lover song… they could have used pretty much any sample at all for those lyrics (doesn’t stand out from every other song that is a love song or a breakup song), and they chose something that was actually important and turned it into a background song
Me starting this video: Wait, why is he playing songs from 2014? I thought these were supposed to be a decade old....oh shit
I know I am getting older when I like the older songs better.
Not necessarily. A lot of the older songs were hits and the current songs seemed to be chosen kind of randomly.
@@missoats8731You’re spot-on with your assessment. “yes, and?”, “Agora Hills”, “TEXAS HOLD ‘EM”, “Cruel Summer”, and “CARNIVAL” are the only *big hits* off the 2024 selections (“Popular”, “Training Season”, “FTCU”, and “Selfish” being moderate successes), and it’s still pretty early to evaluate their staying power and long-term presence. It doesn’t help other artists featured here have fallen off in popularity, so their new songs will understandably be less instant compared to their 2014 classics.
WELL... This video made me feel OLD!!!!!!!!!!!!! Thanks..... -_-
I came to your channel specifically to tell you that you should do a video examining the vocals on Livingston's new album, and if you haven't heard of him, he has a vocal style I think you'll really like. He also self produces.
I think the Justin 'Selfish' actually sounds like it could be a Roomie song too. You should do a cover! But I know nothing lol
When you said you prefer 2014 songs to today's songs, I remembered what my cousins said when I was with them in their home country of the Bahamas for this New Years. We were playing Just Dance 2018 and they said that Just Dance 2014 was better.
Crazy how singers vocals either stayed the same or got better. Auto Tune really slowed a change in the voices of some people
Ten years ago was when i was born 😂 i cannot believe this was 10 years ago i listen to most of these songs today
Welp, another great video. Love the music wisdom you offer us. 🙌
The years are passing way too fast 😰
Fun fact. Time doesn’t speed up or sleep down. So the years are passing the same as they have been. It’s your perception of time that makes it seem it’s moving too fast. Probably because as you get older a year is a smaller period of your life. So it feels like less time compared to what you’ve lived. Hope this helps

I love Sia. I agree with you Joel. New song isn’t my favorite but she’s awesome. Last thing she did I loved was LSD. Labrinth, SIA, and Diplo.
Weirdest thing is you can go back ANOTHER 10 years for Sia to 2004, I first heard her with Breathe Me, which I still think is her best song.
Yes! I had Breathe Me on my MySpace page!
I prefer Elastic Heart, but I did love Breathe Me - most depressing 10 minutes of my life... (my first introduction to it was via Six Feet Under)
I love Imagine Dragons so much. I really loved that they did that song for League. It was cool to hear they actually play as well.
beyonce is from texas i think thats the reason for the album
also she can hit the lower register
I'd love for you to do a deepdive into Kylie Minogue's entire discography. I recently saw a Twitter thread about it and she's got SO many songs I didn't even realise how much I'd listen to her.
Post is one hell of a MTG player
I think samples if done right can be really fun. Like remaking a song from scratch. Or taking the lyric out but changing the tone. It's a nice way to see some old music shine again and be renewed. It only works though if you change it a bit or rework the entire thing enough so it doesn't turn it into a cover labelled as a new song to cash in money. I'm referring to for example Spotify singles. Some singles are beautiful covers of songs that are maybe sung in a different genre. Most likely acoustic. But heck yea the Day 'n' Night Spotify single by coldplay was awesome. It was so good my mom didn't even recognize them and she doesn't like coldplay that much. Also I follow a playlist I'm assuming is one of those catered to your profile called something like EDM samplings. I love it so much. Expecially when the artists are creative enough as always. Where they don't plop a piece from another song unedited and call it new. One example could be The Bender by Matoma and Brando. They kept the melody of September by Earth and Fire (if that's the band's name) but made it a completely different genre and rewrote most of the lyrics. Or Perfect by Lucas and Steve, Haris. It took my mom a second to guess they worked the melody around the opening of A-ha's Take on me. Or Dare Me by Nervo, Plastik Funk and Tim Morrison. They pretty much stuck to the reef of another famous song I don't remember the author of, but made it an entirely different thing. They didn't just take a melody as is from the original song and call it new. Nor did they not do any work around it to make it feel new.
wow Roomie knows 100 gecs? thats cool
10 years later and Grande still pretends being a homewrecker is a big flex.
I'd love to see more old vs new stuff like this!
When I look up all the popular music I used to listen to I try to go through the ones I didn't know about for fun.
In this video I saw Sia's face for the first time 😂
My brain: "20 years ago, oh yes 2004"
Me realizing my brain is 10 years off -_- Oh no...
Re: TSwift. Cruel Summer was written for Lover, which was supposed to come out after 1989. But then she did Reputation instead. So I'd say it was a bad choice for comparison..
It was also released 5 years ago. Should've used something from Midnights SNTV or 1989TV
The guitar part in the Calvin Harris song sounds like "Don't Stop" by ATB. Luv me some Calvin Harris!
Wonder how much Lil Pitchy would've changed throughout the X years 🤔
Joel, I’ve been thinking the same thing about Justin Timberlake's Selfish it sounds like Nick’s song. I might be wrong but my mind feels validated.
I wonder if the interpolation trend is not just about attempts to go viral, but also a safer bet due to most melodies already being used one way or another by now. Unless you directly interpolate and pay the cut up front, there's too much risk to get sued and having to pay a bigger cut.
Keep it Savage Joel. I respect music knowledge tell it like it is!
