Jack London's "People of the Abyss" is one of the most incredibly powerful books I've ever read. I've purchased it more than once to give as gifts. Truly a must-read. You will absolutely experience life in this abyss alongside the author.

The ruling class created this kind of poverty, their kind took everything for themselves and left everyone else to starve, they have been doing it for centuries.
      We see it today everywhere.

Agree absolutely. My prospective great uncles died in the 1890's from T.B. as chidren. No treatment for hernia which must have been a common condition; a strangulation would be fatal. Truly appalling days.

This is true, however it was a different world and different times now. Relative wealth has always been the measure rather than anything fixed. In this sad tale, the worker and the man in line were not far away from each other in our terms, but a world apart in theirs. Similarly those in our laughable "first world" country that cannot afford to clothe their children properly or to buy enough food (or to balance this against money for heating) are a world apart from those that have a comfortable enough job. The success of a society should only ever be measured by the relative state of those at the bottom, not the made up world of share prices only meaningful to those at the top.

The UK was recently investigated by the United Nations and found cases of absolute destitution poverty, I personally know of a man who is sick and has waited 2 year for benefits, I’m still trying to help him now he lives in debt, sickness and misery made worse by the Conservatives attacking the disabled for the last 10 years, a lot of desperation is hidden from sight, food banks everywhere open your eyes my friend most working folk go regularly without food nowadays just do the kids can eat, most folk are to proud to ask for help.

Actually from what I understand, the homeless would rather have slept on the street then enter the workhouses, children and babies separated from mothers, wives from husbands and the death rates in those abusive places was exceedingly high.
There has to be a certain level of desperation before one would succumb to entering such a dark damp place.

Poor grandpa he married out of the work house in Ayr and to look at us all! our family now most middle class a few working class hard workers now retired. His children were all honest as hardworking and some, like him were extremely kind. I was sad to see that found on the ancient document detailing his marriage certificate. He was a proud very kind and handsome man, always brought his wife chocolates and sweeties for his children. An absolute sweetheart and I am the grandchild he apparently took to most and I have his nature. Loved bringing gifts for my family ,something for everybody even if it was charity shops or just a sweetie to remind them I never went shopping without thinking of bringing them something back, just like my grandpa who had to suffer the workhouse. He as always wore collar and tie, very smart man too. Prayers for all our ancestors.x

This is just what I love to watch, with all due respect to those involved, before, and even during; my shift pumping gas/petrol ⛽ at Wawa in New Jersey. No matter how lousy the customers are or annoying the company itself can be, these history lessons remind me just how good I've got it compared to those of the past. Even today many have miserable lives, but nothing can compare.. NOTHING.

Any civilised country that treats its poor and infirm like this is not a civilised country. The countries aristocracy and ruling classes should be shamed eternally for their lack of compassion to the working classes. We are all born the same and we all go the same way so it's so disheartening to hear how our ancestors were treated by the elites. France and Russia had the right idea by getting rid of them.
