- Its a bitter cold day in 1978, and we are trackside with a old Kodak Super 8mm sound movie camera. We are just north of the Bear Mountain bridge on the east shore of the Hudson River on the old NYC Water Level Route in New York. The first train has FL9's north bound in push pull fashion. He is seen blowing the Handcock Air whistle as he passes. Then n/b Amtrak #63, the Niagara Rainbow passes with fantastic echoing horns in the river valley. Then a s/b Amtrak turbo blast past with even better sounding horns. Sorry for the quality, and shaky old film. Thanks for watching. Jackmp294™...

0:22 This is the most beautiful K5LA horn I ever heard
Just like 90s and 2000s still
That’s 1st Generation K5LA for u
0:29 my fav f40 horn show
You captured the best F40PH hornshow in existence in my opinion there isnt one better.
LOL, Thanks, glad you enjoyed it. They sure did sound good.
After all, the K5LA horn was specifically designed for Amtrak, that is until the freight railroads like CSX and Norfolk Southern decided to purchase them.
0:22 Ive rewinded this about 70 times lol
LOL, keep them hits comin. Thanks for watching FB.
How unusual in that the Turboliner has a Nathan P-01235 horn, which were customized by Nathan for Amtrak's E60 electric locomotives. Pretty unique and cool sound.
No, the Turbolinners had P12346 Airhorns I think
@@thischannelisnotused That’s an Old Cast P5A. There’s no P6 bell.
Dang. I didn't know Amfleets were this old.
Amazing FL9 Horn. Just amazing!
Fun fact, The New Haven's First batch of EMD FL9's didn't have horns but instead had really cool Hancock Air whistles the second batch however did have horns like most normal diesels. The EMD FL9 is one of the oldest duel mode diesel locomotives to exust and lasted in service for nearly 60 years until being retired by Metro North in 2008
This is in Manitou, same place where that famous color shot of the NYC Hudson speeding northbound from "Hudsons along the Hudson" film
Man, look at that baggage car bounce on train #63!
The F40PH was my favorite horn in this video!
Back in the early 1980s Conrails executive E8s had Hancock air whistles.
Yes they did. I do have a video clip up with them blowing at a crossing on the Pittsburgh mainline. ua-cam.com/video/Mo_8OcR5to0/v-deo.html
These shots look like they're straight out of a painting. Masterful!
This is so awesome!
amazing old stuff... for us the ones that were not around (born)back in the day its just shows the diferences between now and then......
EXCELLENT VIDEO! i love vintage footage. nice catch of the fl-9's in the penn central scheme
Incredible classic footage. Thanks for sharing. Brings back lots of memories.
this is great thing of 1978 trains
0:26 my favorite horn
Hancock Air Chimes! Nothing like that now!!
Wow how did restoration emd fl9 was here I am so happy with blowing air whistle
Awesome video of three amazing locomotives!Nothing like that today!
Thanks Gand. Your right! Nothing like this today. Thanks for watching.
AWESOME Video, miss the old days!!!
I do as well. Just not the same anymore.
Those horns are amazing, it's too bad there's nothing like them today. They sound almost like steam engine whistles.
hancock made air whistles at one point i believe for that reason i dont remember exactly but i do know they didnt want to give up steam or something like that
Amazing Jack, I think the quality and audio is perfect, because with stuff like such, take what one can get. The K5LA and P5 were outstanding.
Awesome catches
@SuperStarRendon I think that was the experimental Amtrak Turbo train.
Great stuff man!
Yep. Turbo Liner RTL, Rohr Industries.
@SuperStarRendon Thats OK. It must get posted before I even get finished editing the clip. MAN!!! UA-cam is fast. LOL. Thanks for watching...
I miss those RTL's so much.
Wow LOUUUUUUUUUUUUD F40 HORN
My Conrail 1976 layout will definitely have the Niagara Rainbow on it!!
Man, quite good considering it's old Super 8 film. Priceless footage, thanks for sharing!
Love the detuned 4700.
Outstanding!!!
See this is why i wished I was born in the 60's
Yes it was sicnarfkcin. Off 9 to the very end of Manitou Station Road is this crossing. I haven't been in this location since 1979, and wonder if it still looks like this today. Thanks for watching...
@mbta1000 New Haven used them a good bit on many locomotives, Conrail used them for a while on there executive E-8's, which I have posted a while back. Other than that! I don't think to many rairoads used them. Thanks for watching...
Wow. Ten years later
and a turboliner at the end !!!
The turboliner sounds like an Amtrak e60
There is nothing in this world that I like than the Hancock air whistle in 0:00
Two days before 1979
@1jackdk Seaboard Air Line used them until they got into too many accidents at grade crossings so they changed them out for P-5's.
I wish there was an fpa2 there
Me to Elijah
Thanks for posting this!
Handcock Air Whistles are certainly odd
@Amtrak1194 Not quite - PC went bankrupt in 1970 and was folded into Conrail in 1976. This (awesome) video is from 1978.
what train was the last one? Great Video!!
Late reply lol but it was the turboliner
10 years old comment
With 10 months old reply
Perfect timing!
At 8/8/21
Wow, those were the days! How do you transfer your VHS to the computer?
love the vid
Was the Amtrak F40 equipped with a P5 at that time?
x тғw He's talking about when the video was filmed 1978
Tom Todd 774 No standard K5LA, After delivery of the F40 #230 all F40's had a standard K5LA some moved on to different horns such as S5,M5,and Etc.
@@amtrakpilots8947 Yes, the F40PH were either equipped with a P5 or K5LA, in this video, its an awesome K5LA horn.
@@ncg4014 I know that.
was this filmed near the Manitou station or around Manitou? if not, where was exact location where you took the footage if you are okay with it?
@TEMPLE7D The F40 is heading north, so its out of Croton Harmon at this point. Thanks for watching...
thats where the present manitou station is
@SuperStarRendon sorry, realized you update the description. Thanks
There are no more steam engine locomotives just diesel locomotives in the year 1978
Youre with John Durant?
i know i know this was made 14 years ago but i don't know if anyone asked this but what kind of R model is the turboliner? RTG or RTL?
Hmm that F40 must be headed to Croton Harmon to be exchanged for a FL-9
Were those Bradley coaches on the commuter train?
Omg 😱 it’s earrape
And it just cuts out.
0:18 F40PH không phải trả đt
Why do I find this video to be disturbing?
What was the F40s road number?
I think it was #251, but not 100% sure on that.
281
Wtf was that turboliner horn.
Nice 5 chime. Like to put that horn on my Mack Superliner.
@@1jackdk Quite unusual sounding to me. Gotta say i love the FL-9s tho
Sounds like a P5A.
@@christophercarey3232 I don't think that sounds like P5LA
It was different than. P5LA
What kind of horn did the F40 have?
Jothaboss66 most of them had k5las like the one you saw in the video but some had p5s m5s and believe it or not p01235 horns like the turbo liner in this video
That doesn't sound like a K5LA at all.
Well yeah because the sound quality isn’t the best knowing that this video was recorded in 1978 but if you were to hear the original sound in person it would sound like a k5la
You might not even care anymore, but 1st generation k5la
I know. The reason why it threw me off originally is that this recording is being played back at two times the original speed, thus making the horns pitch sound twice as high.
