  • The Trangia Alcohol Stove gets a Carbon Felt Upgrade. The carbon felt assits in a more controlled burn for the simmer ring. And with the carbon felt, the Trangia becomes an instant start stove, saving fuel without waiting for it to blossom. The Trangia stove will continue to operate as designed with the carbon felt in place.

    You've just turned an expensive stove into a tin can with felt in it. It does not function as it was meant to. The fiber wicks the alcohol to the top of the felt and burns there. It doesn't boil the alcohol to produce gas and pressure for the jets to work. The felt also blocks the gap around the bottom of the inner wall so even if any gas/pressure was produced, it would be blocked from getting through that gap anyway. Just stick the felt in a tobacco tin or similar, or a cut down soda can. Conclusion: Fail.

    Shame that just when it started to bloom you then killed it off. Why? Surely, seeing it blooms is perhaps of even more interest!

    Will have to get some of that carbon felt stuff for mine.

    The only thing I think would be a weakness is boil time, as the flame looks much more tame...it barely blooms. For all other types of cooking except stir fry, I think the carbon felt is a plus.

    How the hell is this an "upgrade"? The jets never bloomed. You just turned a good alcohol stove into a candle.

    Nice Trangia upgrade! Looks very efficient on fuel with the carbon felt upgrade. Also looks like the stove is not burning as hot as it would without the felt. I like that because the trangia tends to burn rather hight and hot. I am working on a similar design with a penny stove and have sucessfully turned it down a bit with an interior wall made from scrap aluminum and fiber glass insulation. (vid coming soon) Thanks for sharing this great idea Bill! Thumbs Up!

      I have filled all of my soda can stoves and similar with ceramic / glass wool. The modification has not appeared to negatively affect the efficiency of the burners but has greatly reduced the fire hazard of inadvertent fuel spillage during operation.

    👍👍👍.
    I am experimenting with my Trangia 28 Mini Set. Have used Ceramic Wool, topped with a roll of Carbon Cloth.
    Very encouraging to date. The burner is definitely more 'gentle' .. especially with the Simmer Ring in place. This suits me fine for the type of cooking I do with my set.
    Light up is quick, even with a burner out of the refrigerator and one can set a pot on immediately without fear of 'snuffing' the flame .. as with a still-cold unmodified Burner. I'm waiting for Winter to arrive so I can test it under field conditions.

    Why didn't the stove Bloom. Maybe you had to much carbon fiber ,I don't know.
    Didn't look like much of an upgrade, to me.

      It didn't bloom because it's no longer burning how its supposed to burn, it's using the wick as a wick instead of turning into a vapour up the sides.

    I don't understand how making a slow stove even slower, is considered an upgrade.

      +Davey Bernard>>> To simmer rather than simply heat water. There are certain prepackaged meals at the grocery store that are fun to take backpacking yet are not quite. instant, rather they require you simmer for 10-14 minutes. Simmering opens up the opportunity for better food or at least less expensive food options. Also you can dry bake if you can control the heat better. Its great to have a simmer set up. Happy hiking!

      I hate to be a wet blanket, but the Trangia simmers great, as is. Its only real issue is weighing about 6 oz, when there are so many sub 1/2 oz stoves out there.

      +Davey Bernard The felt also helps to start the trangia in very cold temps, because it acts as a wick and it helps the stove to instantly light. The felt is wicking and drawing up fuel and mixing it with air. This is why its easier to light in the cold. Whereas if you dont have the felt its harder to light because you need to keep the fuel warm or it wont make vapors to light in the center.

      +Davey Bernard Appreciate you watching and commenting. I don't mean to drive this issue into the ground. As others have stated already - the best benefit to the upgrade is instant lighting and immediate use. Another is easier lighting in colder temperatures.

    Hello, I'm JSB
    In this case, there are three good things. One is rising quickly. Second, a change from red to blue flame fire. It means is that the continuous combustion at high temperature to vaporize instantly improves performance. Carbon fiber, which anyone can easily get several times the evaporation performance of fiberglass. Simply put, rounded off with scissors!And third, the liquid fuel can flow out to defeat the stove.And we extend it, make with no need for hard metal stove body.

    I am trying to see the advantage of this other than it will instant start and especially in cold weather. Does this make it burn lower and longer? Will the stove bloom and is it as hot? I just bought the triangia and love the simmer control but it seems like it is a real gas hog.

    • @thomasmusso1147

      Starts in Winter are immediate and one can put the pot on without fear of 'snuffing' the flame as in the case with a cold burner.
      Also .. the burn is definitely gentler .. more so with the Simmer Ring in place, which suits me fine for the type of cooking that I do.

    How do you keep from overfilling when the felt is in place? Will it bloom with felt installed?

    • @thomasmusso1147
      @thomasmusso1147 2 роки тому

      Easy .. watch how quickly the fuel is absorbed into the burner. It will not take long for you to figure out how long (or short) is quickly.
      Yes, it will bloom .. just a bit longer to do so.

    Thank you so much for this video. I've been experimenting with my Trangia 27 3 UL and have baked some muffins, biscuits and tortillas. Still, the fuel runs out, and controlling the flame is difficult so the cooked breads don't look very pretty even if they taste good. I need to try this before I go on the AT this summer. Where did you get your carbon felt, if I may ask. Subscribed!

    • @wawhiker
      @wawhiker  10 років тому +4

      The simmer ring on the Trangia is very helpful for controlling the flame. I know exactly what you describe with the look of bread, LOL! My Mora knife comes in handy as a scrapper... You can buy carbon felt from a few of the alcohol stove makers. A local source is Home Depot - it's found in the plumbing dept. - known as flame protector - made by Oatey. It comes in a 1 foot square in a red and white labeled clear plastic bag. Hope this helps, and more important, enjoy it out there on the AT this summer.

      +Waw Hiker I seen you can get a 3x3 foot section of carbon felt for $6.00 more at Cyberweld made by Tillman. Total 22.95 and if you buy about 2-3 dollars more in merchandise you can get free shipping. You would have a bunch of felt for many stoves or applications. triple your amount for 6 bucks more. I put a round 4" section between a larger cook pan and a 6" cake pan and with a lid on top those to help prevent burning and scorching of my breads to make cornbread, muffins, cake, etc.. Seems to work well in several applications. Great pot holder as well.

    So where does this CF mod stand now. It took me a long time to bloom. I know it now has instant start and you can control the flame hight better, but will it burn as hot and longer than the naked trangia? I also realize the flame is a clean blue and not so yellow. What is the advantage of the felt?

    • @AndyJarman
      @AndyJarman 5 років тому

      Francis recommend adding water to your fuel to prevent partial combustion of the fuel (yellow flame). It's on the trangia instructions.

    The newest video was great. It seems like I will have to do this mod. Right now I am using a tea light stove because of efficency but you can't throttle it down. I haven't been using the trangia because it seemed like it used a lot of fuel. How do you compair the triangia with your other stoves? I just ordered the pocket cooker which is a wood burner and hope I can use the triangia in it.

    It appears that the stove never blooms. I guess because the fuel doesn't reach the jets.
    How effecient is the stove w/the CF compared to using it as designed?

    In cold weather dip a dry twig in your stove to wet the end with fuel.
    Light the wet twig and then drop it in the fuel.
    This method can't be used with this felt modification.

    Why isn't it burning your fingers? Also, it would be nice to see the trangia without the carbon felt, then with the carbon felt. I have a mini trangia, but i have yet to use it. So, I am not sure what the difference between alcohol on its own or with the carbon felt is.

    A similar experience, but combining Carbon Felt + steel wool* + wire mesh in a non intrusive mod for Trangia TB 25, resulting in a almost all blue flame, extended burn time for 30ml of alcohol from 7:30 to 18-20 minutes, at cost of add a minute of two in the time to boil.
    * Supposedly the use of steel wool under Carbon Felt is for reduce the time to bloom, that is delayed by the Carbon Felt.
    A kit with pieces cut in properly size is available in Taobao (PITA to use).
