      Is it possible to add too much iron, would it hurt my plants?

    It will surprise you that I'm a bit on the lazy side, so I try to work smarter, not harder. I start with pulling up the dead plants, less the roots, after the first frost, about Nov, 1st. By this time, the leaves have begun to fall. I have a large maple tree at the edge of my garden, and several oak trees around the house, so leaves are plentiful, and as a bonus, the oak leaves add a touch of acidy to the soil. My soil PH is generally around 6.7, so any acidity it adds is a bonus. February 15th through April 15th, I'll work with the raised beds as I plant them, by mixing the leaves that haven't broken down into the soil. Then I'll top my raised beds off with compost, leaf mold, or raised bed mix purchased at the local store. If I remember, I'll sprinkle a few handfuls of granular fertilizer onto the soil, and gently work it in. If not, I'll top dress the raised beds with fertilizer after the plants get going to give them a boost, if needed. Count on the later. Between the leaves and the compost, there are plenty of nutrients in the soil-earthworms too, so I use less fertilizer each year. More fertilizer is used in my GreenStalk Towers and grow bags, than the rest of the garden, and now I have fruit trees to fertilize too. Okay, I have five fruit trees, three 4'x8' raised beds, three 2'x8' raised beds, two 30.5" x 72" raised beds, Three GreenStalk Towers, an eight foot long cattle panel tunnel trellis, about thirty grow bags 10-30 gallons, and an inground herb garden. I'm the only one who takes care of it and my goal is for it to feed two people. It meets my needs, and then some. I'm starting to narrow down my plant choices, and move towards production, but there will always be room in my garden to experiment with new varieties. Hopefully the plant sale goes well, and I make enough money to pay my electric bill (LOL), and buy two apple trees, a Fuji and Honeycrisp. Either way, I'm still planning on growing Wine Cap Mushrooms.

    Hi kim so good ok now my question about smartpots I see roots coming out of my smart pot any worries about and what can I do about

    • @CaliKim29
      @CaliKim29  5 місяців тому

      It's not that big of a worry per sé. If it's too large for the container, perhaps it's time to move it into a bigger container, plain and simple. Furthermore, growing roots means SmartPots' its doing it's thing! They plant IS growing!!! Does that help, Keith? Kim

    What can I use instead of compost? Definitely getting worm castings and top soil

    • @CaliKim29
      @CaliKim29  5 місяців тому +1

      There a lot of choices ... Manure, Organic Mulch, and Cover Crops/Green Manure -- do some research on all of the above, try them once or twice and see how they work for you! Hope this is helpful! Kim

    What I do to refresh my soil out of my raised beds I take all my soil out of my raised beds putting on a tarp throw vegetables in it that I don’t use from making dinners or the ones that Animals ate when I was sleeping. Then I put worms in my soil so it refreshes everything in it. Then in the spring I re-shovel it back into the raised beds

    • @CaliKim29
      @CaliKim29  5 місяців тому

      @dcrosco1458...if that is working for you...keep with it! That's awesome! Kim! PS, 'Animals didn't eat". LOL!!!

    Can my soil go bad? Should I ever get rid of it and start from scratch?

    • @CaliKim29
      @CaliKim29  5 місяців тому +1

      Yes and yes!
      -Nutrition Depletion-soil becomes less fertile.
      -Compaction (heavy traffic) hinders root growth & impacts poor plant health.
      -pH Changes - soil can become to acidic/ -alkaline..not good for plant growth.
      -Disease/Pests.
      -Loss of Organic Matter - soil will lose it's fertility.
      -Salt Accumulation - can impact plant growth.
      A question to ask yourself...can you even recall how long it's been since you replenished or replaced the soil? If you can't...you may want to replace the soil! GREAT questions, I hope this was helpful! Kim

    Do you dig through your raised beds for grubs before refreshing?

    • @CaliKim29
      @CaliKim29  5 місяців тому

      No, I didn't (I don't often have them), you know your garden and area best, if grubs have a history around there...by all means, dig through! Hope this helps, Kat? CK
