Great insight on Henry Honiball. Love hearing behind the scenes stuff on onfield plays - another thing that made Chasing The Sun so great.

I was there as a passionate All Blacks fan. 1998 was a shocker for our team, but they could have and should have won at Wellington. The selection of Spencer at 10 was a terrible mistake, missed numerous penalty kicks at goal, and tried his razzle dazzle super rugby stuff in the white hot heat of test match rugby, with much less time and space. It very rarely works. The Springboks defence was massive, they took their opportunities, defended like their lives depended on it, and they deserved their win that day.

1998 was annus horribilis for the All Blacks . They didn't win one 3N game. They seemed on paper a pretty decent. team but the retirement of the senior leadership team of Fitzpatrick, Zinzan Brooke and Frank Bunce and then Michael Jones must of had a significant impact. The irony was that 3 of the 4 semi finalists in super rugby that year were NZ teams . It shows success at super level doesn't automatically translate to higher honours.
The big winners though were Australia who knocked out SA the next year in winning the RWC 99. It was recorded as a big upset when NZ lost in the semis to France. Typically NZ were installed as favorites which is odd given only the year before they had the worse season in AB history.

1998 was a time when even the Wallabies beat the All Blacks in New Zealand. AB lost Frank Bunce, Zinzan Brooke, Sean Fitzpatrick, Justin Marshall to injury, and Walter Little and Jonah Lomu didn't play in 1997 were their first season back. I myself attended Bishops in Cape Town and Westlake in Auckland during my school years, where both schools produced several Springboks and All Blacks. South Africans have always been conservative in rugby and it's more about discipline, and New Zealand rugby has always been that "flair" and has evolved from time to time in attack. I think that's where the gap is between SA and NZ.
