I don't think prices will be any good at all, but I always enjoy getting out trapping. If I can catch a wolf or two, it will be worth it. Beaver prices are higher than they have been, but not high. I heard it's dropped some too.
Good morning Gary. Up here we can't use footholds for Marten. Only bodygrips. It's surprising how trapping regulations differ from one area to the next. Hopefully there will be some Marten on my line this season. I have to make some more boxes for this season too. Guess I better get at it. Have a good day my friend.
A lot of places limit Marten to conibear traps or snares. We can use foot traps here though. Coffee cans work with conibears too if use those brackets or nails. Cardboard boxes work surprisingly well too. Have a great day! Raining here today.
Thanks for sharing your knowledge,I have a friend back east and I always told him, that he new a hundred ways to catch a mink, seems there might be as many ways to rig a marten set!
The wolves are #1! Really, they are the only critter I'm really interested in. Beaver are fun, but a lot of work for the price. There's not lots of Marten here, but catching a few is fun, and they are paying fairly well for their size.
Whatever works. The Cree in northern Canada use cubby hole sets at the base of a tree & sardines in oil seemed to work well for bait. . The boxes seem to be what most trappers use. I've seen many variations on those. Even setting them is different. Some trappers like to have the martin go into the box from the top. Others from the bottom. Personally, I like to have them coming up from the bottom.
Me too. From the top is probably OK, but how do you hide the bait from the birds? Just tossing bait into it would be easier though. Also, unless it's a bushy tree, it seems like it will fill up with snow? On the ground, you catch more females. I think that's part of why my area doesn't have a lot of marten. There was a trapper here that over trapped them for years. All of his sets were on the ground. I used to find them about everywhere I went. Marten reproduce slowly. Only 2 or three in a litter every other year on average. Out of that, a lot don't survive. It takes a long time for them to "bounce back".
Looks good we don’t have pine martens in West Virginia I don’t believe. You do what works for you buddy. I trap for the fun of it. I don’t trap to make money I just do it because i love to do it.
Don’t have any of them critters in my area but we have fishers and trapped 2 last season in our short 9 day season. Had a 12 lbs male full mount done for my man cave.
Mostly I like the chase. It's fun to get out and try. Wolves are the ultimate for me though. They are hard to find, and tough to get.....it makes it a real challenge.
Mornin brother hope you have a good trapping season when it gets there sounds like the politicians wants more wolves around making season so late take care👍
Good Morning! The anti-hunting/anti-trapping people used Grizzly Bears as an excuse to stop wolf trapping during the months the bears are out of hibernation....only problem is, we have really no grizzly bears here. One now and then, but it's rare. In the 33 years we have lived here, I've never seen one or had one on my trail cameras. Wolf traps are not a threat to grizzly bears here. It's stupid, but that's the rules we have to play by.
Ever use an old newspaper box? I have several I made into mink boxes, no martin in my end of Michigan. Cut a slot on the side of the box and slide the conni in so it is Michigan legal and toss in bait. I would guess you could hang them on a tree and catch a martin. Later, Rich
OK u got me 🤔 this time, and you would be correct. I can't tell you your doing it wrong. Chiefly because I never trapped pine Martin. Fox coyotes, bobcat n such beaver, muskrat, ect, but never Martin. Not sure why Mountain man
Ha! Pine Marten are kind of fun mostly because of where they live. They like high mountains. They aren't really plentiful and don't reproduce very fast, so you need to be careful not to take too many. It's fun to try though.
Good Morning Muskrat, I haven't seen any fur prices, but seems like Martin have been fairly good in past years ? With the wolf seasons altered in Idaho and Montana, it looks like the left wingers don't want anyone to catch wolves, the Grizzly bear thing, is just an excuse. 😮 Happy Trapping 😊
Good morning Gary. Interesting how you do your sets for pine martin. Frustrating when out of state judges make rulings. World we live in. Hopefully you can lucky with the wolf trapping. See ya.🇺🇲🔥🌲🔪
It is. The thing that bugs me most about the wolf ruling is the reason they used. They shortened the season to "protect grizzly bears" only we really don't have any here. Once in a great while, there is one, but not a single one has been trapped in this area, or even in the state of Idaho. We are not a threat to grizzly bears. On the other side of things, the wolf pelts aren't prime yet, and will be better if we wait, but a lot harder to get up to where the wolves are, and traps will be harder to keep from freezing too. I dunno....it is what it is, and just something we have to deal with.
Boxes we can, traps can't be in the off season. I don't have very many boxes I leave out. Marten are not hard to wipe out, so I try to move the traps to new places every year anyway. Some of the best spots, I leave a box there and use it though.
Can l ask how much pine martin went for last year in your area? Are you going to keep the pine martin furs to use with your leather work or you going to sell them in February? Are those mule deer or white tail? On one them trail camera vids the other day. I swear when that one bound away it hopped like mule never seen a white tail hop.
Sure. Marten in this area seem to sell for about $20-$30 on average. Some more, some less. I just got a new Fur-Fish-Game Magazine in the mail yesterday that says this year's prices should be $55-$65 for the very best, with some as high as $80 (Alaska/Canada) and $25-$35 for the rest. Last couple years, since that big forest fire we had, I haven't seen any marten tracks at all and haven't trapped for them. If I catch any this year, I'll probably sell them through the fur market. Mule deer doe and fawns.

good morning Mr muskrat ❤thanx 4 the video and god bless you and your family 🙏

Good morning. I like those designs. I also love how you said about inventions. I hope you have a great day
Good Morning! Thank you. Lot's of great inventions are accidental.
Good morning ! Those setups for pine martins look like they should work pretty good !
Good Morning! They do!
You certainly have a variety of traps! If the pine marten are out and about, hopefully you can catch some. Those are some clever traps!
We don't have a lot of Marten, but I usually catch a few.
👍🏻👍🏻
I like things that make sense and your ideas make sense. Thanks Gary.
Thank you Ron. Simple is best usually.

Good morning.. thanks for the lesson. Very much appreciated.. I have many questions I could ask.
Good Morning! Ask away! Maybe I'll answer some when the time comes to trap anyway.
Good morning. Hope you have a great trapping season. Maybe the prices will be good this year for the furs. Have a Blessed Day Friend! Justin

Well that some neat set ups for Martin boxes. We don’t have Martin round here but we do have weasels. Enjoy the day👍👍
Thanks! We have some weasels, but I don't think very many. Pine Marten aren't plentiful, but there's a few around.
Good morning 👋🏻 Have a great day ❤

100 different types of boxes at least. The basics are still the same.
Wolves, think wolves! and good luck with the martins too.
The wolves are #1! Really, they are the only critter I'm really interested in. Beaver are fun, but a lot of work for the price. There's not lots of Marten here, but catching a few is fun, and they are paying fairly well for their size.
Man , at the railroad we through lots of them welding rod metal boxes in the dumpster , if I only knew
The ones I buy come in plastic slip top boxes about a 1/4 of the size. Those big metal cans are perfect!
Good luck hunting

Same here. It's nice to make some money, but with the fur market prices, it's pretty dang tough anymore. I just love being out there trying!

Good morning young man,'
Great to see your getting ready.
Looking for welding rod cans for you.
Have a good day
Good Morning! The shipping on bulky cans would be too high, but thank you! I'll ask in town at the welding shop.
Good morning Muskrat😊
Good Morning Amye!
I like the coffee can idea. We don't have Martin here in iowa. But it might work for mink. Have a great day.
I bet it would. It's kind of a portable pocket set. We don't seem to have many Mink here.
We dont have wolves in TN. but i have a ball trapping every year. You will have a good time trapping beaver and martin.
Mostly I like the chase. It's fun to get out and try. Wolves are the ultimate for me though. They are hard to find, and tough to get.....it makes it a real challenge.

I'm hoping to. There is a closer place that is having trouble with beaver. It won't be long term, but it should be fun for a little while.
