It's strange seeing greek alphabets used for writing, because I'm use it a lot in Engineering mathematics and I'm used to seeing it with numbers. Very interesting language though.
Thank you. This video was made 11 years ago, but it’s very good and still useful. I have just moved to Greece, and now I am watching your videos and studying Greek.
Hi Abcac Jac, thanks for your comment. :) If you check out our website www.greekpod101.com/ there you can find lessons that will help you learn how to read Greek. :)
I didn't know the right order to writing greek letters of alphabet, but with your explanations it got easier to write them Thank you so much, teacher. :)
Although I have no difficult with the beautiful Greek alphabet, I´ve recommended this video series as one of the best ever for teaching it! Congratulations and efharisto poli!
I started my long journey learning Greek. I speak fluent 3 languages. Greek is my dream language to speak. I have been to Greece last year) Pronunciation is not that difficult at all after Russian language.
@1:30 Doesn't Greek also have cursive writing? If so, there would be four ways to write each letter instead of two. Or has Greek cursive writing been discarded?
Cool! Great teacher. She is right. Writing while learning does wonders for memory and understanding. Flashcards help you master at lighting speed. I will prepare here on to have paper and pen ready and make flashcards. Systematically use your flashcards several times per day minimum for at least ten to fifteen minutes each time. You should go through your flashcards several times minimum at each sitting.
Greek is very easy as far as prepositions are concerned..there is the preposition "στο"(equivalent to "at") which can replace all other prepositions which stand for "on", "in". "to" or "at"..also once you figure out how each letter is pronounced you can easily pronounce or read any word in greek...grammar is the hardest part of greek since in modern greek different rules are applied than in ancient greek...even most of the modern Greeks are not aware of many grammar rules or they mix up ancient greek's rules with modern greek's ones...
Hi, thanks for these great videos they are the best ones out there for learning Greek! I noticed there are only 5 videos in the 'learn to read and write' series (10 alphabets) and was wondering where I would be able to find the rest? Thank you so much! :)
Don't listen to these Golden Dawn racists. Greeks are not racist they are Philoxenoi (Friends of Strangers) and as long as you respect their culture and religion you are more than welcome.
Hi there thank you for your series of videos I will be making use of them. I was wondering about the Greek pronunciation of 'M'? is 'M' pronounced 'Mee' in modern Greek, and 'Moo' in Koine Greek. I only ask because there are other videos here on UA-cam that teach the Koine Greek alphabet, that teach the pronouncement of 'M' as 'Moo'. I would appreciate any clarity you can offer.
Bernie O'Connor Wow! This is an outstanding explanation! I was about to answer the question, but I saw yours. And I guess from your name that you're not Greek (probably Irish), so congratulations! Unfortunately, many Greeks nowadays aren't aware that the pronunciation of Greek has changed since the ancient times and it's sad. In my school we read ancient Greek texts with mod. Greek accent.
My interest in learning the ancient Greek is to read the New Testament in the original language, but I worry that if I learn the Modern Greek I get to point where I find that the ancient is different, I would like to know for sure if there are so much differences, especially in the pronunciation. What about the New Testament, can you read and understand it all? Or you find that most of the words you don't know? If you don't find a lot of differences I think I might go on with the modern then
I speak modern Greek and trust me I Don't understand ancient Greek there's not a difference in the writing but the words are really hard to understand, especially the grammar of ancient Greek is the worst thing in the world.
If you know well modern Greek , with a good level biblical Greek will be easy . It starts to become difficult if you want to understand texts of the pro - pre-classical era. But it will be because it isn't your native tongue . In fact biblical Greek was simple in order to be understandable by everyone who were a foreigner .

At the end of the series we review all letters again in their correct order. The whole series can be found on our website GreekPod101.com. Kind regards, Team GreekPod101.com
In my physics and Chem classes, I've always wrote Αα differently, the lowercase version. It appears more like a loop, did modern Greek change this? Dans ma class de physiques et la classe de chimie, j'avais toujours écrive Αα différent, le lettre minuscule. Il semble plus comme une boucle, le grec moderne l'a changé?
The reason many Greek letters are similar to Latin is because the Latin alphabet is the old Greek alphabet which the Latins learned from Euboean settlers at a time when the Latins could not read and write.
Hello History Lover, Yes, the Greek alphabet was the base of the Roman (Latin) alphabet. The Greek alphabet in general looks like an intimidating writing system, but with some study you will realise that many letters looks similar to the Roman alphabet. We hope you are enjoying these videos. You will find the complete series on GreekPod101.com Regards, Team GreekPod101.com
You don't understand. The Roman alphabet is not simply based on the Greek alphabet, the Roman alphabet _is_ the old Greek Alphabet. F is digamma, L is the old form of Λ etc. I have no need watching your videos since I can speak Greek quite fluently thank you.
I'm kinda confused. I was watching a different video and he showed different letters in different orders. (1) Alpha (2) Beta (3) Gamma (4) Delta (5) epsilon, etc. Help
Can someone help? So like in english we use the letters to make up words with specific sounds attached to them that also are ysed when we speak. How come when we hear greek i never hear like a full alpha is there two different languages between writing and speaking greek?
Would like to see the letters written on lined paper because Stefania makes the handwritten descending stroke in lower- case m longer than the digital example.
For veeta is Β for the upper case and β for the lower case. For lamda, is Λ for the upper case and λ for the lower case. Lastly , for omega, it's Ω for the upper case and ω for the lower case. Sorry I'm late but I hope this helped you!
