    I was brought up on Hailwood, Agostini, Read and Ivy at Cadwell Park 'internationals". Funny to think that while the cameras were concentrating on Rob McElnea, for us bike fans racing changed forever at Redgate. No more non-World Championship appearances by the top factory stars.

    Remember, that crash ruined any chance of Grand Prix machinery and Grand Orix riders being seen outside the Grand World Championship circus. Before that, we used to see the top racers in the world riding the best machinery in the world. Instead we are now stuck with modified road bike championships .

    I was gutted for Freddie. He was, and still is, my most favourite racer of all time..

      Spencer's crash and leg injuries led to less factory involvement for many years to come...until the whole thing was canned in '91 (?).

      The moment the Lussiana boy passed Kenny, and then Eddie, both californians went heads down after him!

      Remember going that weekend. Two mates were marshalls at Redgate corner and had to rescue him from the gravel. Agree he was a great racer, when he won the double the following year he proved how great he was. Not even Rossi has done that, no matter how many titles he has won.

    Rocket Ron was always a fast rider and I loved his style of riding.
    I like Eddie Lawson because he out there waiting to see everyone make their mistakes.
    Steady!!!! EDDIE.
    All of these racers were all special.
    These bikes are hard to ride.
    Freddie rode the bike in a unique way to get that Honda to steer in traffic.
    Precision!!!!

    Best part of this is that the sounds of the race outdo the sounds of the announcers...wish that in this day and age we could choose to up the volume of the bikes...however, there are some very enthusiastic announcers out there and you add a great deal of value...but...

    i was there that day, probably the most enjoyable meeting i ever attended, scortching day, the top riders from 2 generations all out together. Its a pity the camera missed Graeme Crosby's exploits - on a hopelessly uncompetitive big kawasaki, he put high bars on and pulled HUGE wheelies all the way round the circuit, i was in stitches watching him

      Can you remember what year Barry Sheene won 5 of the 6 races? It had to be pre 1984

      Agree the best meeting I ever went too. Only live about 10 miles away from the track so it was regular meeting. Also loved those Moriwaki Kwaks, Gardner was exciting to watch on his in 1981, taking on all the works two strokes before he got his factory Honda ride. Chuffed to bits to get Crosby's autograph in pit lane that weekend along with KR and Mike Baldwin.

      @@mauriceoneill-author4065 He won 5 out of 6 in 1982. Would have won 6 but he dropped it at the Mallory Park hairpin whilst in the lead and missed out on about £50 grand offered by the sponsers if he had won all six.

    what was the spencer's bike during this race ? with 4 exhauts pipes under the seat ?

    • @billymc2681
      @billymc2681 4 роки тому +2

      The '84 NSR 500 had the fuel tank under the engine. This caused the exhaust pipes to be routed on top of the engine where the fuel tank usually is. This set up was abandoned very quickly and in '85 the NSR went back to a traditional layout.

    • @timcolder2789
      @timcolder2789 3 роки тому

      It was the very first v four NSR 500 as billy mc stated with the fuel tank in the bottom of the fairing. Stood behind it in pit lane on practice day and managed to get some photo's before they covered it up, as it was top secret at the time.

      Not sure if these are the OW 69s you are recalling. They were used at the Daytona 200 for '83 and '84...Kenny Roberts and Eddie Lawson rode them.

    Ron Haslam seemed to always get away at the start of races, but what amazed me was he never won a 500cc GP race. I thought the TranAtlantic match races was Britain against U.S. why was Australian Wayne Gardner allowed on Britain’s team?
