"No ones ever heard the song this way" pretty much sums up Voiceplay. They put their unique spin on every song and usually, if not always, make it even better. I think Layne and Geoff have a touch of Genius when it comes to their arrangements. Part of that is because they arrange to each members strengths, not just because it sounds good like that. The laser beam comes from Layne's mouth. Geoff does some effects and a couple of times I've seen Ceasar do some. Eli has a history of singing in a touring rock band. I think he was a bit overshadowed by Earl at first and has really come into his own since Earl left.
Have you all heard their "I Can't Make You Love Me" several real shining moments in there for Eli and Cesar in particular. C. Will break your heart with sorrow in his voice and there is at least one Eli Power Belt.
Totally agree about Eli... he has gotten better and better over the last couple of years. IMO, I honestly think a big factor in his evolution was Earl leaving. Earl was an extremely powerful high tenor, but with a completely different tone from Eli. Eli has stepped up and sung parts and notes formerly sung by Earl, and now he's just going for it and cutting loose.
Once again VoicePlay takes a song that should never work as a cappella and just kills the f*** out of it! I love the risks they're taking lately because they're paying off big time. Also giving kudos to the hidden VP member Ed Boyer for his genius mixing skills. And LAYNE!!
About Eli. He was second tenor until Earl left in early 2020. I think the change to 1st and 2nd tenor gave him the opportunity to show off his talent. Carry On Wayward Son is the first one that I saw him take off on. After that he was back to the pretty voice most of the time until Hoist the Colours. I believe that he was always great, but the covers that they are doing have changed. They still do ballads and love songs, but there is way more grit interspersed. Voiceplay just gets better and better and I will be here every time you react to them or Geoff!
Agreed. As much as I miss Earl, I think V.P.'s growth has been exponential since he left. Mainly because bringing on a different featured artist for the fifth voice has forced them to become more flexible in their arrangements and singing styles. Then, when J. None joined the navy in 2021, Eli went from being "one of the band" to one of the three legs in a three-legged stool, and he's strengthened to the point where he can carry that weight.
@@Lynn_M867 Indeed. Though I also love Eli's sweet side (as in "kiss the girl" in their Little Mermaid Medley). Of all the guys, I think Eli has the most variety in his vocal timbre (Geoff may have the widest range, but his timbre remains the same throughout)
I agree. Eli is a very versatile 'tool'. He fills in anyway, anywhere, and any style they need him to. When Earl was there (damn I miss him😢) Eli mainly stayed in the back filling it in. But if you go back and re watch those performances, Eli always had a section (many were very brief) that he would shine using many of the techniques that we hear now. It was just that he wasn't in the 'fore ground ' as often.
I don’t know that it’s growth that Eli is experiencing. I think it’s more exposure as they have changed the way that they perform. In the past they were more like everybody else. But over the last few years they’ve not been touring. It has given them the freedom and The opportunity to really explore new techniques, new ways of accomplishing things and it’s really allowed Eli to shine. He is, and always has been, the most versatile of all the performers and I think they’re finally using some of that versatility. I am not a Mario fan, but I bet you guys are. Definitely check out their newest mini. They did a very short cover of Peaches, from the movie, originally done by Jack Black. Geoff really rocks out and hit his highest recorded note so far.
I've noticed growth in, at least, three of the members of Voice Play, specifically. You're right about Eli. And, his growth has been impressive. His lower end has become more stable, more reliable. And, his character voices, while always impressive and fun, have only gotten better over time. Geoff, surprisingly enough, has shown a ton of growth in his vocals. His lower end, sure, and a bit on the upper end as well, but his mid-range and character type tones have undergone a striking change in the last few years, IMO. However, the one I've seen the most growth in, personally, not saying that you're wrong Chris or to argue with your viewpoint, has been Cesar. Just in terms of confidence, in performance ability, as well as range. Cesar has hit notes since joining Voice Play he never would've tried otherwise. But, knowing that he had the other guys to back him up and "safety net" him allowed him to push himself. Oh, and their guest? Anthony? Hory carp...the difference in him singing with Voice Play compared to him singing on his own is night and day. He was good when he was solo, but you put him with that group... it's insane.
They all have been working really hard to push themselves further and it shows. Geoffs diction in his lower range (already better than most) has improved quite a bit further even since Christmas. Eli has reached for the clouds and making his diction clear when he gets there. Rock grit Eli is my favorite. Cesars range is ever increasing. He can hit some crazy highs now and he's been working on taking his range lower too. I think he was down in the second octave during one of their bts vids. Layne... Well, there was brief consideration of calling an exorcist for the sound demon that possessed him, but ultimately, we decided we liked the sound demon, so no exorcism, lol. He's just gone wild! I agree, that bat drag in the beginning was pure magic. They just keep experimenting and expanding on themselves individually and as a group. I'm glad I get to watch the journey. Fantastic reaction, fellas! ❤
I agree with you about Eli Chris...he is now my favorite member. I love the diversity he is bringing. Cesar is even coming out of his shell and showing us attitude.
Ed Boyer, the man who does the mixing for Voiceplay, really ought to be credited as the fifth member of the group-he adds so much. As for Eli give him a song where he can rock it and he WILL rock it. He’s the man when it comes to that. He is also an incredible actor-watch the final part of this song, look at him, and tell me you doubt for a second that he can mess you up if you get in his way. Every member of the group brings something. Anyway, great reaction!!
Yes, Eli is fantastic and Geoff mentioned a while back that he (Eli) was thinking of starting his own channel/patreon and a lot of us in the VP and Geoff patreons would love to see that. Hoping that comments like yours make their way back to him to help encourage him to try stepping out a bit on his own.
I cannot stop watching reactors getting broke by this song...this song broke me as well. Geoff Arranged this one and they just seem to get better with each cover they do!! I just do not know how they do it. There are no words at all. And Anthony has the voice of an angel with all those runs...OMG!!! Loved your reaction Guys!!
These guys have been tearing up with their last few songs. Just out-doing themselves every time. 🤯🤯You are right Eli he has become such a BAD A$$. Love them ALL. I believe Layne's production company Pattycake Productions is in a Mall and they film there a lot. You can tell in a lot of their shorts. Thanks guys you're GREAT. 🥰 P.S. I'm Iowa and they tore our mall down and built a Menard's. 🤬
Pattycake Productions is in the Oviedo Mall in Oviedo (one of the suburb communities of Orlando), but this video wasn't filmed there. (Oviedo Mall is single-story.) It hasn't been revealed where this was filmed, but there are several abandoned malls in the Orlando area. Personally, I think this was probably filmed at Fashion Square or Festival Bay, both of which are either abandoned or nearly so. (I'm an Orlando native, so...)
Awesome reaction as always guys. Anthony Garguila... Gar jewl la. This was filmed in an abandoned department store in Orlando. All the graffiti and vandalism was already there. They had to cover some of it up before filming. There was no rehearsal in this one because of where they filmed. They had to get in and out fairly quickly. You're the first reactors I've seen mention Geoff's hand gun and bullets. This is the 3rd in their apocalyptic series. The other 2 being Warriors and Dream On.
Thank you for another great reaction to Voice Play. They filmed this in an abandoned department store in the same mall where Patty-cake studios is. They had to do it in one take so they wouldn't get caught breaking in. Layne said it would be ok.
Totally agreed about Eli! I was just telling my husband, after Earl and J.None left, VoicePlay shifting their genre, more rock songs that fit his style of gritty tenor. We heard a little in "Carry On Wayward Son," but "Hoist the Colours" was definitely the start of the shift, filling that hole by letting Eli go wild. And now more post-production effects that make it go a step closer to EDM. "Valhalla Calling" and now "Seven Nation Army" feel like a new era for VoicePlay, and I'm personally loving it.
I'm an older, and I love that Voiceplay has turned me on to so much music and genres I otherwise would have ignored. Not only that, but following your reactions has taught me a lot more about what goes on behind the scenes. Thanks! My opinion, (no one nail me, please), before, Eli was singing as member of an a capella group. Now he's singing as Eli.
I think Eli was kinda held back by the presence of Earl (as much as I miss his high notes, though) - now that he's the High Guy in the group, he can show off everything he has. I loved him since This is Halloween, but he really has developed a unique style since Cesar has joined.
While i loved Earl's voice and what he added to the songs they made, i feel that Eli is finally getting a chance to really show his abilities. The guys are all spreading their wings and pushing themselves in every new song. As fas as Eli being squeaky clean, he sings with rock bands when he's not singing with VoicePlay.
This is their third post apocalypse video, following Warriors (Imagine Dragons) and Dream On (Aerosmith). The lineup change between videos is because the zombies get to some of them and they keep finding new strays to join with them.
Gar-jewl-la. And he's only 17 (been told he's actually 25), but was wrong on that. Sorry. I think that Eli used to be tenor 2 and when Earl left, there was an empty slot. He has really stepped up and his voice is now magic. Fully tenor 1. That final "damn" said it all. I really think that being short a person (or two before Cesar) has given VoicePlay the versatility with all their newest songs/videos. The diversity and incredible voices of the vocalists they are bringing on give them so much more to work with. Geoff and Layne are incredible arrangers. The whole group is stepping up and what they are doing is astounding.
Hmm, you didn't like him in Carry On Wayward Son? Not criticizing in any way, just curious. I loved him in that. But yes, he seems to be unleashing the rock god in him more. LOVE IT!!! Yes, they were in a closed down store in a mall. This is part 3 of their apocalypse series. Warriors was part 1, Dream On was part 2. But the story kinda started with VP vs HF Survivor. Zombie apocalypse. They are now up to marauding cannibals. Geoff warned us to watch for them when watching this. 🤣 They know us so well. Loved the reaction!
The buzzy bass doesn’t have to be post - there’s an inhaled note technique that beat boxers have that produces that effect. Considering you have at least two beat boxers here, that’d be my guess. 😊 You said something about how they do it in a way you never heard before? Geoff has said he won’t even bother with arranging a song unless he can do something with it that hasn’t been done. It’s part of why he refuses to touch Bohemian Rhapsody; it’s been done to death. I think what Eli needed was unleashed. The whole vibe they’re offering up has changed. VoicePlay has took a turn towards heavier music in the past six months or so. And I am here for it.
I'm just going to say it. They musicalize burps like little kids. They did it on In The Hall of the Mountain King, too. But I forgive them because their harmonies and power wails are like shots of cognac, AND because their arrangements glitter with artistry.
For me, this was the badassest (does this word even exist? 🤔😁) looking (and sounding) performance they have released to date. Look at them! And the most badass looking of them all is Cesar... So relaxed, sitting down on the left and looking like he could slap a velociraptor in the face without even budging 😅. And Eli? OMG. He's the guy you wish was on your side in a fight. Anthony (BTW... his surname is pronounced "Gar-jeew-lah") is perfect for this song. Well, did Voiceplay EVER featured someone who wasn't incredibly fit for the job? But he has this "angelic" look, especially if you remember him from their other video, "Golden hour". And yet, as you said, he's so well "in character", and he sounds as if he means the lyrics he's singing. 🙂 I was looking forward for your reaction to this one, I knew you'd appreciate it. I love your ways, your reactions are always BOTH funny and instructive, thank you for that. 🙂 See you next time! 🙂
Totally agree, Davide! I can't wait to see what the guys make of Geoff's latest that just dropped the other day - 'I See Fire' from The Hobbit-Desolation of Smaug, he's brought back the characters from Misty Mountains Cold...!
@@raycardy4843 I'm waiting for them, I LOVE that rendition of "I see fire". I won't spoiler any of what it does to me, but I want to see what it does to THEM 😁.
The more you guys talk about Cody, the more I know I have to come visit! And, oh yes the VoicePlay reaction was good too!! 😁 No matter the genre you react to I always coming away hearing the music with so much more appreciation. Keep on doing what you're doing!
Geoff Castelucci released his new video last Friday.... Wicked Game by Chris Isaak. It is absolutely beautiful. Voiceplay released their new video this Friday... Sleeping In The Cold Below from Warframe. It is literally out of this world fantastic.
I remember one of your reactions you spoke about great headsets. I now have a new headset and boy is there a difference. I am hearing the nuances I couldn't here before and the amazing base line is so crisp. Thanks for speaking about it. Because of y'all, I took your advice. You guys are awesome.
Thank you, Michelle! We’re glad we could help out! At the end of the day, the speaker is the most important part of a song or a mix, next to the human ear!
I've seen Anthony's name phonetically spelled as garJOOLah, but take that for what it's worth (not much). My understanding is that the video was filmed in an abandoned mall near to where PattyCake Productions (the production company Layne is a part-owner in) is/was located. They had to get in, film, and get out as quickly as they could, because they apparently didn't have permission and could have gotten arrested for trespassing at just about any time!
Another commenter said they had permission, but their contact that was going to let them in didn’t show on shooting day so they had to get in “creatively” and wouldn’t have had someone there to vouch for them if the cops came.
During the behind-the-scenes or a web chat, I can’t remember which, they said that Layne actually got pretty nervous. After the first scouting expedition there were cops parked outside for over three hours. If Layne was nervous it was a scary situation. Because Layne is the one who thought it be OK if Geoff filmed on railroad tracks that were used for the commute train. After all, once the lights started flashing you had a whole minute to get off the tracks.😂
Hey guys I agree with you about Eli I just re watch Little mermaid medley When you see Eli singing kiss the girls and Eli singing this song His voice look like completely different Since Earl left, Eli evolution is awesome
Garjoola. That's how you say his name. :) I think the longest intro VP have done is with Nothing Else Matters. And it works. They always make a song their own. As for Eli, have you seen Hoist The Colours? He's positively manic in that. And in Valhalla Calling too. Yes they broke into an abandoned mall because Layne said it would be fine. Apparently it was as no one was arrested. :) Someone did mention where in Orlando it was but I've forgotten.
It's in the same mall where Pattycake is located. They did makeup and costumes there, walked to where they filmed, and went back to Pattycake for lunch because the vacant store where they were filming didn't have a/c. The dirt on them might be fake but the sweat is real.
Where Pattycake Productions is located......there is a Mall on the same area......where they shot this video.....walking distance from the Production company......>^^
Eli has ALWAYS been a beast that can do anything. I first heard him sing 30 years ago and he was crushing it even back then. Point him in the direction you want his sound to be, and he will deliver. His acting has always been great too and hes super smart. He does a lot of their lighting too and other tech stuff on sets
Also on Kurt's UA-cam is a very interesting VP rendition of 21 Pilots. I find it hard to differentiate between what Kurt might have sampled of them and their straight voices. Very cool.
That finger gun incident: What do YOU think? Both sounds (loading and clank of shell) - human made (=beatboxing) or postproducionwise artificially added??? 😮🎉 ELI one of a kind. Can sing anything and be anyone in the videos...❤
As someone who has dealt with the mental struggle of overcoming a vocal injury, I have to wonder if Eli was moderating himself for a little while out of fear or discomfort relating to an injury or injury scare. I agree that he seems a lot more comfortable letting loose, and that doesn’t seem to just be an arrangement thing.
Casper is not in the middle of nowhere. Casper is two and a half hours from the middle of nowhere. I thought Eli was really good in Wayward Son, tbh. Also in Queen. Also in Hoist. To me, Layne is the one who has really been stepping up his game to another level in the last year or so. Also, the arrangements.
If you get a chance check out the Swing version of this song I like Postmodern Jukebox BUT Aleksandar Mileusnic's SEDUCTIVE swing version of Seven Nation Army! | Auditions | BGT 2018 was the first time I heard it done like that and fell in love with it. would love to hear what you have to say about both.
I look forward to your reaction and this was great. I wondered what this song was about so I looked it up. It was originally written by the Whites in reaction to "gossip" and the effects they were experiencing. SO it is about gossip mongers and those affected by it. The Seven Nation Army name is homage to Mr. White's misunderstand of the title Salvation Army when he was young. Now I get it . Voiceplay rocks
I agree with you on Eli. You didn't mention the performance - I've been saying this since it came out, but there was not a single second when he wasn't fully in his role and deeply frightening. He was the one I least wanted to meet in a dark alley. He was 100% believable as he character he created. That's a HUGE shift since he started working with darker characters. I adore Cesar, but he was playin' at it, and slipped into rock star periodically. The others were great, but it seemed to me their focus slipped from time to time, or they would fall back into a mild, neutral look, and that's fine in some roles, but not here. An actor who is only acting when he has lines doesn't get jobs. As musicians, it absolutely doesn't matter. But - they're doing full performances, so it's a legit discussion.
Please please do a reaction video of Voice Plays cover "Peaches" ( Bowser, Mario, Luigi & Toad ). Geoff unleashes his inner Rock God in this one. Look out Eli Geoff is coming for you. He will blow you away. It was originally done by Jack Black.
I never get notifications from you tube probably because I sub to a lot of people for different reasons YT doesn't know how to handle it. I just come looking for you if it's been longer than 2 days *chuckle
In the BTS video on Patreon they never reveal the name of the mall they are at because they really weren't supposed to be there. Layne scopes out a lot of their locations and said it would be okay, but then called a couple days later kind of worried because police had sat there watching the area for about 3 hours, I think because of previous gang activity in there judging from all the broken glass and the graffiti on the walls. But it all worked out in the end.

Anthony is actually in his mid 20s not 17, but he has been singing since he was 5 and was on the Ellen Show when he was I believe 7
You said something about how they do it in a way you never heard before? Geoff has said he won’t even bother with arranging a song unless he can do something with it that hasn’t been done. It’s part of why he refuses to touch Bohemian Rhapsody; it’s been done to death.
I think what Eli needed was unleashed. The whole vibe they’re offering up has changed. VoicePlay has took a turn towards heavier music in the past six months or so. And I am here for it.
I loved this voiceplay cover and always love when you guys react to them! Keep up the good work 😊💕
We appreciate you spending your time with us, Sara! Thank you! 🙏🏼😁
Eli slays it in their version of kiss ❤🏴
I loved your reaction. Thank for the laughs. I always appreciate the technical aspects of your reactions.
We always appreciate you interacting, leaving comments, and spending your time with us! Thank you! 😁🙏🏼
I'm just going to say it. They musicalize burps like little kids. They did it on In The Hall of the Mountain King, too. But I forgive them because their harmonies and power wails are like shots of cognac, AND because their arrangements glitter with artistry.
Great reaction!!! Thank you very much.
Thank YOU for watching with us!
I was looking forward for your reaction to this one, I knew you'd appreciate it. I love your ways, your reactions are always BOTH funny and instructive, thank you for that. 🙂
See you next time!
We appreciate you, Linda! Come on out to Wyoming, it’s a blast out here!
Geoff Castelucci released his new video last Friday.... Wicked Game by Chris Isaak.
It is absolutely beautiful.
Voiceplay released their new video this Friday... Sleeping In The Cold Below from Warframe.
It is literally out of this world fantastic.
Eli's voice has changed because vps style has changed. Without Earl, they reinvented themselves and its just been a joy to watch
They filmed in an empty department store in the same building complex their studio is in
I love your reactions. You give so much info about the music. I agree that VoicePlay is great! Every cover is better and better.
Thanks, Catherine! We appreciate you spending your time with us!
Hey guys
I agree with you about Eli
I just re watch Little mermaid medley
When you see Eli singing kiss the girls and Eli singing this song
His voice look like completely different
Since Earl left, Eli evolution is awesome
🐸💭
Does anybody else notice how long it takes Caesar to get up that escalator?😂
Totally confirms my theory that Geoff is everyone's sexual awakening. I don't even care. That man. gah.
I can't remember if I told you yet but Voiceplay has a new cover out. Creep - originally from Radio head
I don't remember if I have recommended Kurt Hugo Schneider, "Wawing Throu a Window", with voiceplay. Eli is fantastic there.
Also on Kurt's UA-cam is a very interesting VP rendition of 21 Pilots. I find it hard to differentiate between what Kurt might have sampled of them and their straight voices. Very cool.
These guys has evolved so much its crazy.
Big facts!
This is so amazing. Why it has hardly any views is beyond me
🙏🙏🙏
I remember going to the Casper mall every year for the State Track meet
Used to be a big destination thing here, now it’s almost non-existent! Crazy!
That finger gun incident: What do YOU think? Both sounds (loading and clank of shell) - human made (=beatboxing) or postproducionwise artificially added??? 😮🎉
ELI one of a kind. Can sing anything and be anyone in the videos...❤
Beat boxers can do unbelievable things with their voices…. So it’s not totally out of the question that the sound effects are human-produced… 🤷🏻
@@307Reacts thanks! I'll ask in the next Patreon chat. Maybe they tell it... 😉
Brilliant reaction yet again fellas! Always look forward to your voiceplay’s reactions. Keep ‘em coming 😊
We look forward to seeing you in the comments, Amanda! Thanks for your support! 😁🙏🏼
In my opinion, Geoff and Layne made this video. Everyone did great, but the rest, that IS Goeff and Layne. Again, IMO. Great reactions.
Great reaction! Funny thing is, the original didn't even have a bass in it playing that bass line.
Geoff put a bass in there ❤
In the behind the scenes, they snuck into an abandoned mall right next to Pattycake Studios
If you get a chance check out the Swing version of this song I like Postmodern Jukebox BUT
Aleksandar Mileusnic's SEDUCTIVE swing version of Seven Nation Army!
Please check out lilacs cover of this, if you haven't already, it was also an amazing cover.
As a bass player, my first song was ‘hunger strike’ but I think that shows my age more than anything 😂
How about a shoot in Angle, Alaska?
Neutral expressions can be more concerning because you don't know what the person is going to do.
Please please do a reaction video of Voice Plays cover "Peaches" ( Bowser, Mario, Luigi & Toad ). Geoff unleashes his inner Rock God in this one. Look out Eli Geoff is coming for you. He will blow you away. It was originally done by Jack Black.
Geoff's voice in Peaches just didn't even sound like himself. It was an experience. And Layne's daughter is gorgeous.
Sometimes taking risks pays off! This was a great setting for this one!
The only exception to the short intros is Metallica songs
