I love that part about captions. I have a hard time understanding what is being said without captions or subtitles. Captions especially nowadays where they are far less obtrusive, are super helpful and I would argue also help people become more comfortable with having to read subtitles for media in languages that are not their own.

i have a 12 yr old cousin who can read fast, unfortunately she lacks comprehension and the tools to learn how to decode new words.
which leads her to frustration bc she doesn't understand what she read due to the reading system these schools adopted. so i plan to help her.
as for my 6 yr old
i focus on phonics to decode using noah webster elementary spelling book 1853. once she is familiar with the word it become a word she memorized which leads her to reading a sentence fluently. then i ask her question about what she just read to build comprehension skills.
she likes to freestyle which helps with rhymeimg as well reading dr. suess
honestly i find common core detrimental.

I know several people who do not read out loud fluently. But they comprehend science books, engineering books, computer.manuals and history books.

For just about all subjects, mastery comes before fluency.

This was enlightening, but referring to "above that line" without having the camera display the chart was a bit annoying.

22:37, I believe is the chart he is referring to?
